Heading out of the Chantry courtyard after Anders did his whole 'let's blow up this church full of people' act, I had him in my party along with Merrill and Aveline. As we're leaving Anders starts raggin' on Merrill about the fact that the Keeper had taken in the demon to save Merrill and how that was such a noble deed and Merrill didn't deserve it... something along those lines.

I really wish I had been able to turn round and shout at him a bit for that considering what he'd just
done. Also feel like he was projecting a lot of his own worries about his situation onto Merrill. Sure, she's a blood mage and deserving of a telling off. Still wanted to point out a few things to Anders.

I'm really warm and my brain's slushy so I don't know if any of that made sense. If you disagree then please try not to jump down my throat about it.

Well, the Anders fan thread has been craving for an option to smack him good for a long time now, so... You're not alone and nobody will hate you for it!

No, i also get angry at Anders often when he talks to Merrill. There are several ways to look at Merrill's actions. But when Anders took in Justice, he was more careless than she ever was. He focuses on Blood Magic while he made himself an abomination and plans to kill people to ignite a war. He is a hypocrite, and i would really like to tell him that.
That he might be projecting his own problems on Merrill is an interesting thought, that would actually make his behavior more sympathetic. But he still is needlessly harsh about it. Harsh just doesn't work with Merrill, so i doubt it is well-intentioned.

I have a theory that if we got to smack him then present him with Ser Pounce-a-lot (or perhaps a tonkinese cat) we'd be able to shake off some of his Vengence-induced daftness. Even if it didn't work it would be fun.

Yes, Anders is quite the hypocritical and insufferable douche during Act 3, and his attitude toward Merrill is, to put it lightly, excessively judgemental and stupid, considering his own course of action.

I do still love his character, though. He needs another widdle **** cat.

Even in Act 1, Anders can be brusque. I had him with Aveline and he asked her if Westly was, "a naughty little Templar." Aveline was shocked. Then Anders proceeded to clarify by describing the favorite "games" that Templars liked to play. I have to say I was both shocked and embarrassed.

If he would only listen to Isabela, he would recognize Merrill is a Kitten. Then his judgement of her would be vastly different ;) .

I predict that this thread will be yet another dedicated Merrill Fan Thread before the beginning of page 2. Image IPB

I always got angry when he was mean to Merrill. That was as one of the three things I hated about Anders in DA:2 the other two things were that he whined too much and that I didn't like his voice actor. Also I found it funny that I always made Anders a blood mage in DA:A but in DA:2 he hates blood mages. It reminds me of when I made Wynne a blood mage

I had Fenris and Anders in my party when all that went down.  They both tear her up pretty bad.  It was like the only time they ever got along.

I imagined this happened as they walked away.

I didn't know that happens probably because I stopped putting Merrill and Fenris in my group at the same time. Eventually I got tired of Fenris's douchy attiude towards Merrill. BTW does Merrill ever be mean back to them?

She doesn't ever really heed them, no.

That's who I had on my team too!
In retrospect, probably not the most tactful choices.

I always saw it as the classic 'I just like to get drunk now and then, but my friend is totally an alcoholic' syndrome. He's preaching to Merrill because he's desperately trying to convince himself that's not who he might be.

Thats too bad I was hoping Merrill would make Fenris cry by making fun of his hair or something

Projecting, yes.  He doesn't want to admit that he's royally eff'd up.

Ignoring his warnings (which were not all unfounded) was about as stubborn/mean she was going to ever get.

Funnily enough I never got the urge to shake Fenris... Maybe he just pulls of douchebag better than Anders.

I think Fenris seems more Douchy because of his voice. If Fenris sounded like Cammen I probably wouldn't think he was such a douche. He would just sound really whiny

Well, Fenris is even meaner to Merrill than Anders, but at least he isn't a hypocrite. Anders condemns Merrill for using blood magic and consulting with a demon, when he is a mass murderer to be and has a demon inside him. Fenris is prejudiced against mages, but at least he is consistent about it and he is honest. I guess you get used to him. But Anders is just an ass around Merrill (normally i like him, but sometimes...)
I like it that Merrill never makes any petty insults to get back on Anders and Fenris. When Anders nearly kills that girl, she doesn't berate him. If Hawke plans to sell out Fenris, she pleads not to do this. She is the only companion that wants to give Anders a second chance in the ending. You can say what you want about her blood magic, but she is a good person, is genuinly kind and values others feelings.

I'd say they're all good people. Just different levels of damaged.

Anders is a hypocrite. But you could make that argument for Fenris, too. And you guys are all sorta mass murderers. Comes with the territory. Anders knows that he's an abomination and I'd say he almost is so mean to Merril because he's angry at himself and his attempts to do good and how badly things have turned out. Merrill, I imagine, looks to him like a proto-Anders. Kinda. But without kickass boots. (Did you see his Awakening starter boots? Creeeepy.)

Just because Merrill doesn't fight back doesn't necessarily make her good and kind. She -- shuts down on herself. Her lack of fighting could just be her being self-hating, not her being nice.

Like I said: all good people. Just different levels of how damaged they are. They all seem to be doing the best they can with what they've got, and mostly, what they got isn't much except a metric **** ton of baggage.

She actually does one very good Bslap to Anders in her quiet understated way when she talks about her knowing that all spirits/demons were dangerous and that she wished Anders had realsized that as well.
