Oh, no, I know.

But that was pretty late in the game, if I remember. I think they're interesting together. They're ... foil-y?

IDK. I wonder if Anders sees Merril as someone about to make his mistake and if Merrill sees Anders as someone who made a mistake she (is sure she) avoided.

Well, Fenris is even meaner to Merrill than Anders, but at least he isn't a hypocrite. Anders condemns Merrill for using blood magic and consulting with a demon, when he is a mass murderer to be and has a demon inside him. Fenris is prejudiced against mages, but at least he is consistent about it and he is honest. I guess you get used to him. But Anders is just an ass around Merrill (normally i like him, but sometimes...)
I like it that Merrill never makes any petty insults to get back on Anders and Fenris. When Anders nearly kills that girl, she doesn't berate him. If Hawke plans to sell out Fenris, she pleads not to do this. She is the only companion that wants to give Anders a second chance in the ending. You can say what you want about her blood magic, but she is a good person, is genuinly kind and values others feelings.

His enchanges with Merrill didn't come off so much hypocritical to me as "don't make the same mistake I did". He's projecting hardcore, with a side-dish of Justice's irritation over spirit/demon semantics.

I long, -long-, for the option to punch Anders in the throat.

Truth be told, Fenris annoys me more than Anders for a whole variety of reasons, but when you get right down to it he's a bit more justified when he starts ****ing at Merrill. At the very least he's consistent about his hate, although to some degree I think there's a bit of self-hate and hypocrisy on his front as well (he sold out and fought for the lyrium markings, and hates himself for it, so he deals with this by projecting that everybody else will do the same thing, focusing in on mages because he views them as the reason for his torment).

Anders, however? He seems to operating under some strange morality where as long as it's not blood magic it's okay. And if not that, then bald-faced and severe hypocrisy.

I had Fenris and Anders in my party when all that went down.  They both tear her up pretty bad.  It was like the only time they ever got along.

I imagined this happened as they walked away.

Lol, I'll remember that image now. I had the two of them in my party as well. I actually thought it was kind of nice of them to put aside their idealogical differences aside whenever they were around Merrill.

I love how your defense of Anders isn't "He's not being a douche," but "He's not being the kind of douche you're saying he's being."

I'm not being sarcastic, and I totally agree. And I love how healthy the Anders thread is about the character's faults.

And Fenris is totally a hypocrite. Way worse than Anders in my opinion.

We're very strict about the proper categorization of Anders's douchebag moments. There are just so many of them to keep track of, you see.

To be fair, several of the companions could pull this.

Merrill included, really. Although you make up later. Possibly in a very sexy fashion.

*laughs*

Welcome to the world. Isn't that how you know many people to act? Haven't you had a moment when you realize yourself that you do the same thing?

Every person I've ever interacted with for a long period of time has shown me exceptions to all their rules. It's like English spelling: "i before e, except after c, or as sounding as "ay" as in neighbor and weigh, and also weird is in there for some strange reason, as is their".

"Magic is always good because I do magic, and sometimes it's worth it to do silly things, and that's all right, but the line is blood magic."

Sure. Sounds weird to me. I'd think blood magic would be less bad than letting in Justice. I don't even think the idea of striving for Justice is the best thing ever. But that's not my brain. And I'm sure if you got to watch me do things, if you saw me think of right and wrong, you'd come up with just as crazy, not at all sensible ideas held together. I mean, sometimes someone will do something and whether or not I think they're right depends just on how much I like the person.

People aren't sensible. We're all hypocrites somewhere. And if you tell me you're, I'd assume you were lying.

Baaah, I can't find the quote, but Merrill does a fantastic snark back at Anders in Act 3 I think. Something about giving up the mirror as soon as Anders gives up the plight of the circle mages. I always rival Merrill and I just though 'atta girl!' when she did that - she's got some backbone underneath all that sickly fluff.

Funnily enough I never got the urge to shake Fenris... Maybe he just pulls of douchebag better than Anders.

I got the urge to troll him hard.  Like I wanted to make him even more furious.

He's hot when he's angry, that might be it.
Having said that Anders is pretty sexy when Justice busts through. You know, apart from the whole losing his sense of good timing and mercy thing.

The most devoted Anders fan out there will admit to his flaws, but in this case, I get the impression that he's being mean to Merrill because he cares about her on some level and wants to help her. Yes, he does take it too far on more than one occasion, but he is like that with everyone, even those he likes. Some people just say inappropriate things. It doesn't make them wrong. Not all the time, anyway. In some ways, his behavior towards Merrill reminds me of his own rivalry romance. And yeah, he does see himself in her.

Anders: It's not a good feeling, you know.
Merrill: What?
Anders: Being an abomination. I just got a taste of your future.
Merrill: I'm not that foolish. Our relationship is, um, strictly platonic.
Anders: It's like you're trapped in your own body, seeing out your eyes, while someone else moves you like a puppet.
Anders: And you're trying to scream, to move a single muscle, but there's no escape. Until you look down at the blood on your hands...
Merrill: Stop it. You're scaring me.
Anders: That's the point.

Anders: I don't know why I'm bothering with this, but you do realize it is crazy, right?
Merrill: Believe me I noticed, if I had any other choices, I'd take them.
Anders: You have choices! You always had choices! Stop using blood magic. Get rid of that damned mirror.
Merrill: Oh in that case, I will head back to Kirkwall and throw it away, right after you abandon the plight of the circle of mages.

Anders: Your Keeper did not deserve that death.
Merrill: It was my risk to take! I never asked her to do this for me.
Anders: She knew you didn't have the strength to resist the demon. That's why it picked you.
Merrill: Why are you doing this? What can I do about it now?
Anders: Make up for your mistakes. Most blood mages never get a second chance.
