Regardless of viewpoints, I don't think it's right to make claims involving "Shepard is" or "Shepard believes" or "Shepard thinks" etc....because really, there is no Shepard...Shepard is who each player makes him or her, and the fact is that there are many variants to "Shepard" depending on the player. One player might make Shepard a spacer or colonist, and not care about Earth as much as the galaxy as a whole, while others could play Shepard with only human interests in mind. Based on what we've seen, there's no concrete evidence in the series so far to suggest that Shepard is definitely a certain kind of person with a strict set of beliefs. Each player molds Shepard to what they want him or her to be.

Which is fine, but it also almost gurantees some sort of railroading.

My Shepard, for example, is a Colonist / Sole Survivor.  While he wasn't born on Earth, it still represents something almost sacred to mankind.

If Bioware forces the storyline in such a way that Earth is cannot be saved, then my Shepard has been railroaded out of the character and story I tried to build.

It's already confirmed there will be multiple endings. I'm sure Earth's destruction will be one of them. Derp.

I'd be somewhat disapointed with it if Earth was fully destroyed.  A better way to do it and to cater to those who feel like James does about having Earth around for future ME games, is to have it uninhabitable for whatever reason for one or two centuries.  Forcing humans to seek refuge on other species homeworlds and in space colonies.  For another game in the ME franchise you could travel back to earth to take back the planet originally lost in the war with the Reapers almost 200 years before.

Not particularly.  The first movie was undoubtedly ground breaking in the film industry for a number of reasons.  It's got a decent plotline to it as well, but it's far from my favorite.  I couldn't tolerate the books as I found myself developing an intense dislike of both the protagonists AND antagonists both.

It's also a setting that, while interesting, I don't feel very much of a personal connection to.  It's also a setting in which there is not much to explore....most of the galaxy is thoroughly charted, all the races are well known, and there's just not much that's new under the sun, if you will.

Just as Shepard could die in ME2.  This still begs the question: how does Bioware handle any future Mass Effect titles that take place after ME3?  Such wildly divergent endings can't really be accounted for, and you can't indefinitely do the save import thing either, as things ultimately get too complex for Bioware to take into consideration all possibilities and still have meaningful content.

You can personally declare the "Shepard died" ending in ME2 as your personal canon and it is valid, but you completely cut yourself off from ME3, and it's more or less an auto-lose for ME3's events.  So while that's technically a valid ending to the trilogy, practically it's a "non-canon" ending, as Bioware wants everyone to purchase and play ME3.

They either have to declare a canon history for the ME series, or just shelve the entire franchise, never to be used again.  Be a damned shame if they did that, IMO.
