So I am replaying Baldur's Gate with EasyTutu and this time I am taking the canon party.
I am playing a Cavalier with Longsword and Sword n Shield proficiencies.

I more or less figured out the proficiencies for each NPC.
Minsc Two-Handed Swords, Imoen short-bow etc
But what about Jaheira and especially Khalid? Make Khalid a tank with the strength gauntlets and longswords or make him a mediocre archer with longbows?

If I make Khalid an archer Jaheira gets the gauntlets and goes with Scimitars/Clubs, if I make him a tank shes gets weaker slings.

So what did you guys do or propose?

Since you are a Cavalier you should tank pretty good, so you don't really need another tank. I think Khalid is best used as a swordman. Give jaheira the sling and you are done.

Sword and Shield for Khalid. Sling for Jaheira, staff in an emergency.

Thing is, I have already 2 tanks (Me and Minsc). Adding a third tank is an overkill I think and it's good for someone to use the nice longbows. Khalid fills the archer part but he is average at them. Hence my dilemma.

I did a test run and using 3 archers (Khalid, Jaheira and Imoen) and they performed quite nice. Maybe I am overthinking it because I was spoiled by Coran last time I played.

Khalid might also be the backup tank if he runs out of arrows I guess.

I'm playing the same party Luminus.

I'm a vanilla fighter w/LS, Flail, SSSx2.

I have Minsc as a Barbarian but same profs as you do.

Imoen is a Swashbuckler w/short bow.

As for Khalid and Jaheira; I made her a Druid w/sling and Khalid a Bounty Hunter w/Long Bow and Bracers of Archery.

That's providing plenty of artillery in melee and when Dynahier runs out of spells I change her script to 'Ranged' and she uses her sling.

We're all 6th lvl except Dynahier (5th) and we're rolling.

It's an ok party. You might actually want to change Khalid to a Fighter/Mage. F/M's are great in Baldur's Gate 1 due to their flexibility. Use him as a support caster and archer.. If need be he can still hold his own in melee. Just cast Shield and he can tank pretty well.

Jaheirah is best as a single class druid (Totemic Druid, if you don't mind overpowered classes, otherwise plain druid) with sling and staff.

Nah I prefer the default classes of the NPCs. I thought about making Khalid a F/M but I will have Dynaheir and will dual Imoen at 7th level.

I could use another Thief when Immy duals though. Maybe take Coran and Yeslick until she gets her skills back then switch again to the default team.

Luminus, I'm planning to dual Immy at 7th also - to line her up with BGII.

Thanks for the insight about needing thief abilities when she does dual though. Interesting consideration that I'd not thought of yet.

I'll probably try to leave the party alone and let Jaheira cast "find traps" - ALOT.

Yeah another idea for Immy, is doing some grinding to regain her thief skills and/or remove all party members and keep only you and her.

Alternatively you could pick quests that don't require many Thief skills.

Jaheira could cast Find Traps but you need to know where they are first. And she doesn't really have the most spell slots in the world.

The best solution I think from a practical and roleplaying solution is to get everyone to max level then switch temporarily Jaheira and Khalid for Coran and Yeslick.
And just "say" to those two "Sorry guys we need a Thief till Immy finishes her training, we'll join again soon" I'm sure they'll understand :P

After all as long as you mostly play with them and finish with them there's no problem I think.

In "game canon" terms Khalid, Jaheira, Dynaheir, Imoen, and Minsc are your companions after BG1, but there's certainly nothing that suggests you have to ignore the other characters _during_ the journey.

To echo Luminus: It's an RPG. Use your imagination. There's very little preventing you from role-playing the other party members.

There are certainly role-playing justifications for dropping the "game canon" characters from a party temporarily. Maybe Khalid and Jaheira want to go secretly inform the Harpers on what they've found while you're off helping Imoen "practice" her magic, so they ask you for a break (drop them off at an inn and pretend like you agreed to meet them there in a couple weeks). Imoen's training is a great role-playing excuse to do some of the side quests in the southern and middle parts of the map (think Basilisks).

To get a bit more on topic and more specific I wanted some suggestions how to allocate Khalid's proficiency points.
I made up my mind on Jaheira, I'll start with points in Sword n Shield and Slings, then move on to Scimitars or Clubs.

Since I play on EasyTutu, should I "cheat" and put 4 points right from the start in Long Bows?
Ignore Longbows completely and put 4 points in Longsword/Two-Handed/Axes?
Take a more "legal" and balanced approach and put two in bows and two in Longsword/Two-Handed/Axes?

Also which of those three weapon types do you suggest? I vote on Axes because my Paladin and Minsc have the Large Swords covered.

Considering you're playing easyTutu i can pretty much assume ur going into BG2 right? If so then i suggest you dont put points in axes because i cant recall any awesome axes. If your char and Minsc have long and large swords covered id suggest going with 2 weapon style and choosing longbow, longsword and then when u get to Bg2 put them in Scimitar and Warhammer. He'll be quite powerful then. The use of bows becomes weaker the further you go into the BG series where in TOB its pretty much useless. Also there are plenty of longswords out there, cant u just share? :)

There's a few things that can be said in favor of axes in SoA and ToB:
*good characters can buy a +3 axe melee/throwing combo called Azuredge which is very useful against one type of enemy in SoA
*eventually you'll come across a +5 axe called the Axe of the UnYielding which has some interesting properties.

It figures that in a game where dwarves make some of the best fighters that there's going to be some interesting axes and war hammers lying around.

Yeah I'm going into BG2 but Khalid is not coming with me ;) My Paladin is going longswords sword n shield, then flails I think, then in BG2, Two-Handed Swords n Style for Carsomyr. I'm not sure what next maybe Bastard Swords or Warhammers? We'll see. Also I'll be playing a Cavalier so nothing ranged for me. :)

My team in BG2 will be surprise surprise Me, Minsc, Aerie, Jaheira, Yoshimo/Imoen and Valygar (not too sure about him but fits nicely as a Coran/Khalid/Archer replacement, maybe I'll make him the two-weapon axe warrior dunno).

But I'm mostly asking for Khalid since he doesn't excel at anything, neither dexterity nor strength, though he has great constitution and can put more than two points in something.

Putting three points in longbows and three in longswords/axes, is what I am considering since, with the strength gloves, he can switch from melee to composite longbows and be both good in them but not great.

Also Grand Mastery vs Mastery only gets you +1 damage and better speed right? I don't think it's as worth it anymore.

True, but you could always go back to true grandmastery, e.g. by using BG2 tweaks.

I think you can't get legally Grand Mastery in BG1. In EasyTutu or BG2 you can put four points in the beginning but in BG1 you have to put 2 points in 2 proficiencies first before you can add more, and you only get 6 points. Which means the highest is High Mastery. I could be wrong though.

Anyway since in BG1 Khalid had a Two-Handed Sword, I would simply put 3 points in THS and 3 in Longbows and the strength gloves so I can switch on the spot, and be done with it.
