Why isn't Merrill in my house?

I asked her to move in with me and she seemed totally psyched, but she's still slumming it in the alienage. She can totally bring along the Eluvian, too. Sandal will probably fix it for her, in fact. I don't know what's keeping her.

I always wondered the same thing. I think she does technically move in, but she misses the alienage so she always goes back.

She, uh, only really moves in after her Act 3 quest "A New Path". Otherwise, it's just implied.
Plus, she refuses to bring the Eluvian to your house, stating that, "Some things should remain far from here."

She was in my house at the beginning of Act 3. I'm guessing in Act 2 she doesn't move in as a gameplay thing because the game doesn't know when a player may ask?

I think she's there for the quest only, then doesn't reappear there till after "A New Path" is over.
I could be wrong of course, but Act 3 is the main trigger.

Even during Act 3, Merril wasn't in my house. I'm thinking either it's a glitch, or maybe she found out about that thing with Isabella. Let's hope it's not the latter.

I was under the impression she just wasn't there when Hawke in the game was in the mansion but lived there otherwise.

I believe she's only there during the day/night, being back at the alienage during the other period.

When I first got the game Merrill showed up in my house in Act 2. After the first patch however it isn't the case. She shows up in your house in Act 3

Merrill is in my house all the way during Act 3, except in the final closing part of A New Path.

Patch must have broken it then.

I think Merrill stays in Hawke's estate in Act 3 until A New Path quest appear. That's when she goes back to her old house in Alienage waiting for Hawke to come and help her with her quest. At least that was in my playthrough. After completed A New Path quest, Merrill permanently stay with Hawke in the estate.

After completed the final battle, Hawke returns to the estate like before before the final battle but Merrill disappeared again. There's no way to go to any location at this point other than the Black Emporium.

Merrill, who claims there's nothing dangerous about her blood magic or the mirror, won't bring the mirror to Hawke's mansion because... it's too dangerous
thus she splits her time between her home and Hawkes, often sneaking out when Hawke is out or asleep

She moves in @ the beginning of Act 3. But she goes off to work on the mirror during the day. The Codex explains this, and the dialogue too.

There's dangerous in terms of what it can do and dangerous in terms of what it represents. She repeatedly says it is not a danger in terms of what it can DO. But since it represents the symbol of her schism with the Clan, she wants to keep it far away from the Estate in case things go bad with them or a Templar comes calling on a rumored magical artifact.

So she's right. It's not dangerous to anyone as it is. But it's dangerous to Hawke as a symbol, especially since a house full of apostates is only being kept off the Templar radar with status and well-placed bribes anyway.

Of course the Mirror probably would have gotten fixed much sooner if she did bring it to Hawke's estate. A bored Sandal would probably repair it between cleaning the chamberpots and swinging on the chandelier.

She really should have. It isn't as though Sandal would tell anyone about it, and if Audacity tried anything... well, among the corpses surrounding Sandal in the Gallows is a pride demon.

to be fair Sandal's at least as likely to accidentally break it as he is to repair it. remember his "I'm sorry I broke it" and the fact that he does swing from the chandelier (although so does Merrill...)

It's possible, but no one knows more about the interaction of magic and inanimate objects than Sandal.

I just wonder if the mirror requires a special type of long forgotten elven magic to work?

Also, don't know why the magically inclined love chandelier swinging....

You don't even need her as the LI to get that. Just examine the house.

I'd rather Merrill swing on the chandelier than Sandal. She seems much lighter than Sandal and much less likely to bring down the roof.

Definitely true.  Unless Sandal has a 'feather' enchantment to make himself lighter.
