Why do you not like certain characters?

Notice: This is not a thread to argue which character is better than the other. I'm not here to start a flame war (which I know this thread will eventually become). This is merely an attempt for me to gather more perspective on characters in the Mass Effect IP.

Alright, I've been on these forums for a while now and I can't help but notice the burning hatred some people have for some characters. I just want to know where these hatreds are coming from. I myself do not dislike any particular character. I think they all have something cool and unique to offer to the story.

Anyway, back to the point. I'm here to ask you why you dislike (x). If you want to give a rational and considerate explanation of why you don't like a certain character or just blatantly spew hatred, post it here.

Just try not to ****** off too many people.

I don't like the fact that Liara alone has plot armor invulnerability.

You don't like Liara because she has plot armor? Or you don't like that Liara has plot armor? Or both?

Both. Her plot armor makes the character annoying. Like a mosquito that keeps buzzing around my ear and won't **** off. She's not that interesting to begin with, they really screwed her up in ME2 and a bookworm archaeologist-gone-Shadow Broker is just preposterous. The fact that she's apparently the one correct LI/companion for Shepard since she can't be killed just makes it all worse.

Well I just find that certain characters aren't any fun to watch or interact with. Samara is the main one. I don't like Liara anymore because since the comics started I think her character is horrendously written.

Otherwise there are certain characters who may have beliefs or attitudes that I don't like, but they're still fun to follow in the narrative.

Honestly, I don't like Tali because of her huge following of fanboys that would cut your throat and the way she seems she is portrayed in both games, but more so her portrayal in ME2. I don't know if the 'Talimancers' or the 'Fight for the Love' group hates me more, but not much one can do about that.

I'm not a huge fan of Thane either. Brooding assassin with a death wish? I just don't find it that interesting. Plus, please don't die on my ship Thane. The Cerberus crew is too lazy to clean up anything. Oh, and his memory recall thing creeps me out.

Jack? I used to dislike her but I've been more sympathetic to her as of late. Just don't steal stuff if you decide to leave the ship okay?

Legion? It's a love-hate relationship.

I guess that's true. Samara does seem to be a little bit passive but her character seems to pick up when your nearing the end of her development. It's a shame they had to cut it off their (And I'm not talking about her half romance, I'm talking about her freindship towards Shepard).

Also, can you please specify why you find Liara's character badly written.

I actually don't dislike any of the characters. My canon Shep, though? Different story. He dislikes characters for roleplaying reasons. Ash because of her views on aliens (I know, I know - not racist. Let's not start that again. It's just that the initial impression really turned my Shep off to her as a person), Miranda because my Shep never could trust her, and Zaeed because he's a psychopath (my Shep's paragon).

But me? I don't see why I would hate any of the characters.

The way I see it, is we all like every character in one way or another. When one claims to hate a character, they're really saying they love to hate that character--as opposed to outright hating them.

My own observation only. No need to take it at heart.

A lot of the characters in ME2 are pretty undercooked because there are so many of them. So they ended up boring me with their lack of personality. I was even more frustrated when I read their LoSB dossiers to find that they each had some interesting little quirks, and yet the game never explores any of those.

It's not so much that I dislike any of the characters, I dislike how some of them were written of which the worst is probably Jack. She really gets built-up as an incredibly powerful psycho with a burning hatred of Cerberus, but she's not. She's not that powerful, she doesn't seem crazy in the conversations we have, and she doesn't do anything remotely anti-Cerberus aside from fighting with Miranda. I was looking forward to having some really nasty characters on my side in ME2 but none are particularly bad or hostile.

Well, your observation is incorrect. The Council, Udina? Those are characters I love to hate. In fact, I love to hate them so much I went back and changed my canon Shep to save the council and put Udina on it! On the other hand, Liara's forced presence and plot invulnerability is just irritating.

The only character I can say I didnt enjoy was Kaiden If your Male. He's a bit of a bore and does not have much to say to short for a few personal anecdotes. I feel that most of the LI characters are poorly written when not seeking or unable to achieve the LI. but femshep came off as a bit of a hornball in ME2.

Fair enough. I'm sure TIM makes the perfect example, though. I do love to hate him. :P

I don't get it. You don't like a character because of their fans? I agree with you that her character was not very well portrayed in ME1. She seemed kind of like a walking Quarian encyclopedia at some points. In ME2 I thought her character was much better portrayed. The way she went from being young and sprightful in ME1 to almost sad and melancholy in ME2 broke my heart. Also, I think that she is the only character that actually changed during the two years Shepard was dead. In that way, (at least for me) It makes her character more unique and believable. You don't just stay the same person for two years after you've endured a traumatic event like the Normandy attack, especially at a young age and when that person is close to you.

I'm not a huge fan of Thane either. Brooding assassin with a death wish? I just don't find it that interesting. Plus, please don't die on my ship Thane. The Cerberus crew is too lazy to clean up anything. Oh, and his memory recall thing creeps me out.

I agree with you that Thane was kind of cliche, but overall I think his character was well written and had decent character development.

I agree.

Legion? It's a love-hate relationship.

How can you hate a character that doesn't have a personality? Or is that the thing that bothers you?

That's exactly why some people like her. Some people like characters that are kinda ****y (take Jack for example).

About me it's only personal tastes. I just played the games several time, finding some characters moar appealing for me than others. In general I like almost all the alien characters (except Samara/Morinth) and I'm quite disinterested with the human ones (except Kasumi), but even them have a sense in the universe and storywise, so amen, I can deal with the fact that thei're important too. No other big reasons, especially I find really, really pointless the "I hate a character because of its fanbase" arguments, but this is the internet... it's full of dumb people who like to make hating groups of other people important as it is the task of their lives, so again, amen. I don't care more than a tot of those idiocies.

I actively disliked both Ashley and Miranda. They aren't bad characters at all, and both of them ahve some pretty interesting back stories, but their personalities drove me nuts. Every time Ashley opened her mouth it was either xenophobia or random aggression, and Miranda's constant-little-smile started to grate on me...

Good characters? sure. Characters I like personally? No. No problems with the rest of the cast though.

I never liked Ashley. Why? because she's a racist witch hag...and now a hypocrite on top of it. Aliens from the animals...geez. Other than her and my unending hatred of her, everyone else is fine if not a little boring or touchy feely at times.

Jacob, he's so blandly bland and completely uninteresting in personality and abilities.
