I don't find the broody emo types appealing at all and when I found out that he was designed by asking the women at Bioware what they found sexy, I did have a moment of wanting to raid the offices to find proof of Twilight or Anita Blake fans.

Did they really do that? Interesting. Why not ask the people on the forum what they find sexy? I'm sure many would be eager to assist. For example, I cannot bring myself to date underlings.

Here's one article about it. http://www.gameinfor...n-of-thane.aspx.  I know there's more around somewhere but can't find them at the moment.

I know it was probably easier for them to just go with a small group of opinions, but for those of us who aren't the 'gigglesquee!!1!' types and who've long since outgrown the broody mr. mysterious, it's eyeroll fodder.

it actualy feels like they were going more for Twilight then Anita Blake.  Thane's darkness feels somewhat fake, like a diet darkness.

its just that with Thane... they tried to put all these features that women supposedly find atractive and ended up overdoing it, IMO.  honestly, I'm kinda glad that they didn't ask on the forums, becasue I'm afraid, it would have been even worse.

what I think they should do is stop making characters that they thing would be a great romance and start making characters that they think would make great characters.  there's a reason why Varric is so popular.  there's a reason why Alistair is liked by so many people.  they are characters first, and as such - they have their flaws and thier quirks that make them seem more real and as a consequence - more atractive.

Honestly, I don't like Tali because of her huge following of fanboys that would cut your throat and the way she seems she is portrayed in both games, but more so her portrayal in ME2. I don't know if the 'Talimancers' or the 'Fight for the Love' group hates me more, but not much one can do about that.

I'm not a huge fan of Thane either. Brooding assassin with a death wish? I just don't find it that interesting. Plus, please don't die on my ship Thane. The Cerberus crew is too lazy to clean up anything. Oh, and his memory recall thing creeps me out.

Jack? I used to dislike her but I've been more sympathetic to her as of late. Just don't steal stuff if you decide to leave the ship okay?

Legion? It's a love-hate relationship.

Wait, so you admit you don't really hate Tali, but you just hate the ridiculous following she's garnered over the years...

Amen to that, brother! (Though what do you mean by "the way she is portrayed?")

I also thought I'd hate Jack, but she kind of creeps up on you after a while. Oh, I'd still never pursue her as an LI, but I can still tolerate and even enjoy her violent, punky remarks from time to time.

And Thane... probably the one thing I'd have to disagree with you about. He may have a cliche personality foundation, but it's still pulled off well within the dialogue, as the fangirl base can definitely testify to (The movie Avatar being the paramount example of "It's not the story itself, but the way you say the story," because everyone knows Avatar was, at its roots, "Space-Pocahontas/Dances-with-Wolves"). However, I did think Thane was about to go into cardiac arrest every time he did the flashback memory relapse. To be honest, the way he did it kind of scared me.

And what's there to hate about Legion? The poor guy (thing?) barely says anything at all. Heck, Legion tries to shorten his own sentences to as concise and blunt as possible that can still be understood by us "inefficient-talking-peoples"--to save energy? I don't know.

As far as squad mates are concerned?
I dislike Zaeed. He is a violent sadist and doesn't care for anyone but himself.
I feel sorry for Jack (but don't tell her I said that, she'd kill me)
I am torn about Samara. Her devotion to a rigid code is dangerous at best.
I am just as torn about Grunt. He has issues and I wouldn't classify him as a character I would like but it's not his fault.
Miranda was redeemed by the fact that she finally does stand up against TIM.
The rest of the bunch is not so bad.

Oh and I don't dislike Jacob ... I just don't care :).

the minute i saw this guy i already knew what was going on  and that's why i didn't care for him for the rest of the game, i really hate when games do things like that ... force you to romance someone, make him likeable just because you're woman or man,  gay whatever ...

and after seeing  what type of fans he attracts just made him look even more pathetic in my eyes  haha xD

I've noticed alot of dislike towards Jacob. I actually kind of liked him. I think beyond the missions where he is required I never used him though. He is kind of boring, but I think he's the most realistic character. He's just like a professional soldier.

I think the reason he is so "boring" is because at one point there was alot of issues people had with Kaiden. being voiced by the guy who voiced Carth and with the standard troubled past thing and whineyness. Whereas Jacob comes along and he's just a regular, well adjusted dude. So I liked him but I feel like the ship is filled with over the top characters that overshadow him. I think he would be a great like Kelly Chambers or kenneth and that girl who's name escapes me. Just a secondary on the ship character.

as far as, I dislike this character because he is "poorly written", and/or a "cliche". I've heard that about every single main character. I don't think any of the characters are poorly written... although I'm unsure how one would measure that. But as far a cliches go... I think the characters all fall into vague archetypes but thats pretty much universal in all story based games or movies or tv shows these days. Check out tvtropes.org... Truly original characters are few and far between and I think judging them based off that is unfair, unless you submit that all the characters are cliches.

EDIT: Realized I never mention any characters I disliked in a thread about disliking characters...

Don't really like Miranda,  she's a very professional leader type person... And I don't like authority figures in real life so I just don't like her for that (its a personality thing, nothing to do with her writing.)

I dissagree with alot of what Samara is about... but I still find her to be a very interesting character with enough depth that it makes it hard to say I don't like her.

and just for fun MY TOP THREE SUPER FAVES! Jack, Garrus, and Wrex

I didn't like jacob because it felt like he had no reason to even be on this mission.

Thats when I realized the irony.

Garrus and Tali can both die in the suicide mission. I think you can even not recruit Tali. Garrus in ME1, too.

Liara is mandatory for ME1. Liara basically mind-rapes you, which is forced by plot, too. Liara has plot armor for ME2.  As you said, Liara has a comic. Liara has her own DLC. Liara is treated almost like a 'canon' LI in Genesis.
<...>

I'm so awaiting for confirmation of Samara or another asari for ME3 - because if not, Liara will likely end up extracting and decyphering some data from Shepard again, hence getting plot armour. Honestly, at her first appearance in ME1 she was rather good, but constant "you can't get to Ilos without Liara", "you can't get Thane or Samara without visiting Liara" is getting on my nerves, let alone "as intelligent as beautiful" vs. "a good kid"

Probably late to answer this, but you HAVE to recruit Tali. You have to track her down to get her data, if she dies you get critical failure, and if you try to not recruit her UDINA of all people forces you to take her.

Zaeed - he is ugly, I was able to talk with him twice... There is nothing to like about him.
I never cared about Grunt. I don't know why... I hate his voice and if I remember correctly I talked to him twice.
Jacob - he was soooo boring and uninteresting so he had to die in my every playthought (except the first one).
Next character is Garrus... For some reason he was in the middle of some calibrations for ¾ of the game.
There is also Thane... I never had any chance to talk with him, usually he tells me about his LM after I cannot say what: (NO SPOILERS ALLOWED).
Ashley and Liara in Mass Effect 2... Two amazing characters in ME, two cold b*tches in ME2... I still hope that they will return to their old personalities in Mass Effect 3.
Kaidan was pretty boring too... His comments on Citadel were so annoying. He is most likely not going to appear in most of ME3 playthoughts anyway so... I am happy.
I didn't like Jack at the beginning, but I found her very interesting after doing her loyalty mission.

I meant in ME2. Should've been more specific, my bad. I'm not sure but I remember someone saying that you can skip Tali's recruitment and leave her on Haestrom. :I

Characters I dislike from ME:

Liara, because she was "Whoa ... ", but once I realized that you only needed her for the last portion of the game - sorted.

Tali, apart from the ally achievement I never used her in game. Tried to leave her behind and was annoyed that I couldn't. Trust Udina to stab Shepard in the back!

Ashley. I even completed a romance playthrough but no. What's wrong with 'I'm not good with words, but, I trust you' or even a simple 'I think I love you'?

From ME2:

Thane because of his back story. Too OTT for my Shepards.

Jacob. I had a single Shepard ready for the romance but she was so slirty (that's sl*tty + flirty) and he's so uninterested. She stayed single. I only talk to Jacob with my ManSheps. It's a pity because "normal" humans are what I and my Shepards like.

I used to dislike Jack but then I finished the Paragon romance and now she's ok (but only in that playthrough).

Tali - she doesn't want the truth to be known because she values reputation more. And then there's her attraction to Shepard - sigh.

Liara - Shepard doesn't romance her and still she can't let Shepard go! For me Liara is approaching crazy stalker lady status. I hope that in ME3 they tone things down, especially for those Shepards who do not romance her, or, perish the thought, don't even like her.

I wasn't a fan of Miranda and I kinda of blame the screen shots you get during conversation. Once I started to kind of like her then I would get a screen shot of her bum.
