It has ninjas, who are also assassins, and they fight each other...if it turns out there is a pirate then this may just be the greatest movie of the year

edit: thank you for alerting me to this movie, I definately WILL be seeing this

Ninjas are already assassins. Unless it's a comedy, that's a title fail.

I'd watch it not because I'm a fan of ninjas or whatever, but only to see what exactly the movie has to say, especially since I'm a curious student of Asian, Asian-American and (Asians in)-American films. This review, though, hints that it's largely a style-over-substance affair with nothing much to offer in terms of acting or plot. Given the Wachowski brothers' involvement in the production, I'd suspect as much. And personally, I'd rather have a look at a movie that doesn't invoke the age-old East-Asians-know-martial-arts stereotype, but I guess moviemakers know what's going to sell.

Side tidbit: unlike what the title suggests, it may interest folks to know that the cast is a mix of Korean, Korean-American, Chinese-American, Vietnamese-British, and Japanese to name a few, rather than exclusively native Japanese. Capitalizing, perhaps, on the fact that western / international audiences are often inclined to think that all Asians look alike. Hmmmmm.

Not all ninjas were assassins.

You're correct; my point is that whether in orientalist representations or Japanese representation idealizing the past, the need to modify the word shinobi or ninja with assassin is reduntant because assassination is something that is included in the general bailiwick of the ninja. Ninja spy would be equally reduntant.

EDit: Ah - ninja assassin could very well mean one who assassinates ninja, whether the assassin is also a ninja or not. I retract my earlier comment.

Consider my interest piqued.

Big fan of realistic portrayals of ninjas, though this doesn't look like it. Might still see it just for the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" vibe I get from the style of Ninjas.

Oh what a disappointment. I thought this thread was made for mr. Woo, and not for a movie.

Ah well...

Oh wait, look, it's Han!
