After starting Mass Effect from the very begining again last night I started thinking what a cool ship Bioware created, especialy the SR2 from ME2. Which made me think which is my top 10 space ships of all time, from Tv, Movie and games.
so heres my list, what would be yours?
10# Dropship from Aliens, ( the Huey of the future, wich helped give Aliens that Vietnam war film in space type feeling and has inspired scifi's for years after, " WERE ON A EXPRESS ELEVATOR TO HELL, GOING DOWN" )
9# Star Destroyer, from Star Wars ( first impression WOH thats a big Bloody Ship, which for some reason always had me routing for the Empire, they just always had the coolest stuff, except for the X-wing )
8# Starbug , from Red Dwarf, ( odd choice maybe, but that little ship was indestructable, basicaly the designers relized that the only thing ususaly survives a crash is the black box flight recorder, so just make the whole ship out of the same material as that and presto, GENIUS )
7# Tardis, Dr Who ( oh come on it can go anywhere through space and time, and its bigger on the inside than on the outside, say no more )
6# Klingon Bird of Prey, Star Trek ( the SBD of space, you deffinatly did'nt want to get stuck in an elevator with this green meanie skulking around ready to torpedo you. )
5# Millenium Falcon, Star Wars, ( " WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK. " , "SHE CAN MAKE POINT FIVE PAST LIGHT SPEED " Really Han point five, is that good, what the hell are you talking about !!!. does'nt matter we all love that ship, especialy when it comes with its own Wookie. )
4# Battlestar Galactica, BSG ( sort of the Margaret Thatcher of space ships, Old a bit rusty but youe still would'nt mess with her not if you were Darth Vader with a hangover.)
3# X-WING star Wars ( yes I know another Star Wars ship, but this little beauty was a Spitfire in space, who didn't want to be a space fighter pilot after watching the attack on the Death Star. )
2# USS Enterprise, Star Trek ( I know people might say this should be first, but this is my personal list. Specificaly the Constitution refit Enterprise as seen from the Motion Picture to the Search For Spock. just an iconic ship for an iconic TV / Movie series. )
1# Normandy SR2, Mass Effect ( genuinly my favourit Scifi space ship ( Quick, Quiet and Beautiful, and thanks to a few upgrades along the way, she has enough firepower to burn a Collector ship from stem to stern, err,,, if they have a stem or a stern.
** NERD ALERT** would the Normandy be in your 10 most iconic fictional spaceships

It goes kind of like this for me.
Serenity.
Normandy. SR-1.
Tardis.
Everything else.
After much thought and a liberal recap of memory on the SR-1. I figured i'd edit.

ya i love the normandy, its a great ship and shows what the alliance can do when they work with other races. personally tho, i would have to say that sovereign is the beast of all ships tho (even if it got destroyed at the conclusion of ME1). it took soo much to take down that ship, and i loved the cutscene when it plowed thru that alliance ship to get in the citadel lol. it just seems like if you saw that ship in real life, everything would stop moving in the area, and everybody would stop to stare in the sky. its just a remarkable ship, HUGE!

I couldn't make a list (too many to choose from) but the Normandy was a very cool little ship, i still think the Archangel from Mobile Suit Gundam Seed is better though.

Yes, but I wasn't really into real Sci-Fi until Mass Effect.

Almost certainly. Bioware did a really good job a creating something special with the Normandy. However exterior look I prefer the SR-2, interior I prefer the SR-1. So I hope ME3 gets the military feel I loved back into it.
Also another ship I loved from gaming was the fighter craft you flew around in Descent.

Are ships from books not allowed on your list?
I don't think the SR-# would make my list if I was trying to list 'objectively' the most iconic ships. But it is one my favorites.

I liked the SR-1 better than the SR-2, mostly because of the black interior. But nothing beats Sajuuk or the Naggarok.

If that list is based in a personal point of view (and i think it is) i can agree with the open post.
But objectively talking i think ships like the Enterprise or the Millennium Falcon for example, are too radicated in the sci-fi collective immagination for be beaten by the Normandy.
However i tink too the normandy is the most beautiful ship ever seen i a sci-fi series.

I have to say, I like what you're bringing to the table with this topic. I do, it's made me have to think.
I mean, what constitutes a "warship"? By definition, I think, it has to be a ship that can make war - which excludes, to me, such iconic ships as the Heart of Gold or Moya. I also tend to leave out "fighter" class ships like the X-wings or the TIE fighters or Starfuries...
Ranking them, though? Oh jeez, that's tough. It's like asking which child someone likes best.
So, here's my list - unordered,
Normandy - both versions
Star Destroyer - all versions
USS Enterprise - all versions (though if you forced me to pick ONE, I'd go with the E)
Klingon Bird of Prey
Millenium Falcon
Galactica
The White Star - from Babylon 5
USS Defiant
Talyn - from Farscape
Shadow vessels - from Babylon 5

Right my favorite sci-fi ships, this is a difficult choice to make however it has to be done
Here is my list in order 1-5
1. Normandy SR-2 (the only time I have played with the SR1 was when it was destroyed)
2. Tardis (If the doctor finds a Bar in it then it will most certainly be 1)
3. Serinity
4. Death Star
5. One of the Spaceships from Starship Troopers (the first and best one)

I actually really like the design of the Collector ship. The appearance of the outside, and also the repeated hexagons that they use in their interfaces and technology. Obviously supposed to evoke imagery of a hive, much like the insect-like Collectors.
