I have to say, I like what you're bringing to the table with this topic. I do, it's made me have to think.

I mean, what constitutes a "warship"? By definition, I think, it has to be a ship that can make war - which excludes, to me, such iconic ships as the Heart of Gold or Moya. I also tend to leave out "fighter" class ships like the X-wings or the TIE fighters or Starfuries...

Ranking them, though? Oh jeez, that's tough. It's like asking which child someone likes best.

So, here's my list - unordered,

Normandy - both versions
Star Destroyer - all versions
USS Enterprise - all versions (though if you forced me to pick ONE, I'd go with the E)
Klingon Bird of Prey
Millenium Falcon
Galactica
The White Star - from Babylon 5
USS Defiant
Talyn - from Farscape
Shadow vessels - from Babylon 5

I Probebly did neglect Babylon 5, the White Star,  Agamemnon, and Shadow ships were all great, just not in my top 10.
there are so many fantastic ships across so many great scifi  universe's

In no particular order...
U.S.S. Thunderchild
Galactica
( Both the original and new versions - not sure which one I like more than the other. )
Normandy SR1    ( The repositionable engines make it look way more bad ass than the SR2. )
Millenium Falcon
Klingon Bird of Prey
Earth Directorate Starfighter
GunStar
T.A.R.D.I.S.
( But not the new one as it just looks like a cider brewery has exploded. )
VF-2SS Valkyrie II
Moya
Star Fury
The Liberator

-EDIT-

Just had to add another 2...

OK, so that's 12 not 10.  Image IPB

Almost certainly. Bioware did a really good job a creating something special with the Normandy. However exterior look I prefer the SR-2, interior I prefer the SR-1. So I hope ME3 gets the military feel I loved back into it.

Also another ship I loved from gaming was the fighter craft you flew around in Descent.

Yes it would probably be there.

But to pick a top 10? That's surprisingly tough, so many good ships to choose from, in so many different works of fiction.

In no particular order:

Normandy (SR1 and SR2)
Slave I (Boba's and Jango's) - awesome ship, probably my favourite.
Enterprise - probably E, but not sure.
Voyager
Millenium Falcon
Serenity
Goa'uld deathglider
Andromeda
Scimitar - from star trek nemesis. I really like this ship.
Thunderbird 2 - hell yeah! ../../../images/forum/emoticons/cool.png

This will teach me for not taking my time and thinking things through but i rembered Blakes 7 and the Liberator i liked that.

In terms of interesting designs the boob ship from Battle Beyond the Stars was fairly unique.

Those lists lack the Andromeda Ascendant. They are incomplete!

Also, the most iconic spaceships are most likely (in random order/cluttered by respective franchise):

Deathstar
Star Destroyer Imp.II class
Super Star Destroyer
Nebulon B Frigate
Millenium Falcon
Firespray Gunship
X-Wing
Tie-Fighter

Battlestar Galactica (both old and re-imagined series)
Viper MkII (both old and re-imagined series)
Battlestar Pegasus (reimagined)

Andromeda Ascendant
Eureka Maru
Wrath of Achilles
Maggock-World-Ship (seriously!)

USS Enterprise NCC-1701
Every other Enterprise
D'Derix Warbird class
Bird of Prey class
Borg Cube
Prometheus class

Normandy SR1
Destiny Ascension
Sovereign (Reapers)
Geth Dropship

Serenity

Moya

Aurora class Ancient Warship
Wraith Base Ship
Wraith Dart (that sound is wicked!)
Puddle Jumper
Ha'tak
Prometheus class
Daedalus class

Those are just of the top of my head.

edit://
Curunen, kudos for Andromeda. I almost felt alone!

I always found the Arcadia (Captain Harlock) to be one of the coolest spaceships ever made 83
Also the Swordfish II, the race ship from Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop), had always a something.
I also loved the Wolfen on Starfox.
The Y-wing, on Star Wars, was also one of my favorites 83 And the V-Wing too!
The Normandy is pretty badass as well :3

And that's how far my knowledge of spaceships goes XD;

I have to put the Battlestar Galactica as my number one.

It might be that I'm still infactuated by the series, especially after I just watched the ending of the re-imagined series which I won't spoil - but I definitel teared up. That ship was a symbol and a home to that little fleet, and it saved their asses multiple times.

Normandy is definitely up there on my list though.

for me the most iconic space ship has to be the Millennium Falcon and most of the fighter planes etc from star wars (except the T-Wing Fighter that is not iconic at all) and of course the Tardis i am sure if you pitched that to someone nowadays they would laugh you out of the door for coming up with such a space ship for films or tv shows

I don't see how anyone could argue the Normandy as more iconic than the Tardis. Those are my three favourite ships too, though.

here is my list

1.) Normandy ta da
2.)Tardes from doctor who
3.)my own ship idea the fleet ship (hafe the size of death star, looks like General greves style with a rotating colony for forward hafe, then a main ram system running down the inside with core ship tubes runing from top to bottom in a section and a huge main hanger that can hold thousand's of cruser/big ships with million's of fighter's, the ishimora's side shield metal thing's but at the six shield factorys on colony rotating arms that don't rotate but frotect it from outside. droid controle ship style can conect on to arms, then has a huge medical arm on bottom like the viewing bridge on top. holds all diffrent types of ships from star wars to mass effect and beyond)

1. Millenium Falcon ( Coolest piece of junk ever. :D)
2. Battlestar Galactica (Just a menacing meanlooking hulk of metal)
3. Klingon Bird of Prey (I never was a trekkie, but the Klingons know about cool ship-designs.)
4. Imperial class Star-destroyer (oh yes, any true nerd know there are several classes of star-destroyers. ;) )
5. Discovery (2001)
6. Gothic class Battleship "Intolerance" (From Spacehulk. No idea what it looks like but with a name like that... :P)
7. Tardis (Dr. Who. Maybe not a "spaceship" but who cares? )
8. Normandy (I prefer the original)
9. Terran Battlecruiser (Starcraft)
10. Nostromo (Alien: The Eight Passenger)

Interesting, alot of people prefer the original Normandy, I thought SR2 would be a landslide vote winner

I would choose The Lady MacBeth from Peter F. Hamilton's The Night's Dawn book trilogy. There's barely any art for it, but man that ship was awesome. I highly recommend that book series for any of you that like the huge scope of Mass Effect.

I don't think I'd use the word Iconic to describe the normandy, it's a cool design and all, but in 5 years it'll likely be completely forgotten.

Honestly, Wing Commander was far more influential in gaming than Mass Effect, it spawned a major movie at a time when most people weren't even on the internet, and I doubt highly that anyone remembers what it's fighters looked like.

So at the moment, I really don't think I'd use the word Iconic, or put it in a list with ships that just about everyone can name on sight. There's billions of people who can look at a Star Trek or Star Wars ship and immediately name it, a ton of people who can do the same with Firefly or Battlestar. There's like a couple million who've ever seen the Normandy.
