Everyone:

I've had multiple playthroughs of DAO, but this one through as Raven the magic-wielder is the first one where I've presided over something of a massacre. To wit, in the battle against the undead, I lost:

1. Murdock
2. Perth
3. Lloyd
4. Dwyn

I usually lose only Lloyd (who is no great loss, BTW). This time, though, was different. Probably because huge, AOE spells like firestorm, while effective against enemies, also inflict damage on friendly characters. Oops. Sorry about that, Murdock, Perth and Dwyn.

Yeah, Area Effect spells can really mess that part up.
Lloyd, though, is a suicidal moron. He's wearing no armor, he's armed with one dagger, and he usually rushes off to fight 2-3 walking corpses on his own. I usually have to turn the difficulty down to casual just so he doesn't decide to try picking fights.

Heh. I don't mind losing Lloyd, because it means I get loot his tavern for free stuff — repeatedly. His bar maid is so generous with his wares!

More and more, I'm finding that I prefer to play rogues on my DA playthroughs.

True, but I love hearing how annoyed he gets when he says "You gave the bar to Bella, talk to her"

It's okay on nightmare as long as you have a healer with you. I always give Morrigan basic healing, because I figure that it's something she'd see reason for, but I never go further than that with her. It's enough to keep everyone alive, most of the time, though. This last playthrough, I did an order of circle. Orzammar, Redcliffe, Deep Roads, so I had Wynne and Oghren. It was amusing, but too trivial

Loyd gives you an amulet if alive. I like keeping him alive. I mean if my Warden is able to make even useless fat Loyd survive, then he must be a tactical genius.

Yeah, I like to keep them all alive, too. And Lloyd even learns something.

I didn't try too hard to keep people alive with my arcane warrior since he was pretty much solo for this fight. Perth and Dwyn were the only survivors, while everyone down below perished.

I have kept everyone alive twice, once as a dual wield rogue and once as a spellcaster-mage. Basically, it involves lots of crowd control; not only mage spells, but dirty fighting, two-handed sweep (warrior), scattershot, etc. Pause the action frequently and try to keep anyone from taking damage that isn't a party member.

I truly hate Lloyd. I wanted to get the helm -mostly for the oportunity to say" I got everyone alive". I reloaded over and over the battle, but no luck. One I let the moron stay hidden unter the counter and stop bothering me, suddenly I had no trouble keeping everyone alive. The silver I gave Bella to get away were well spent.

I've never been able to keep Lloyd alive in any of my playthroughs. Do I have to baby-sit the fellow, follow him throughout the (chaotic) battle just to make sure he doesn't suicide? **LOL**

You do have to baby-sit mostly. Sometimes, he happens to move closer to the chantry area, which makes things easier, but that is mostly random. Just keep an eye on him, and if he's being attacked, go after whoever is attacking him. If your mage has access to mind blast, force field, cone of cold, fireball, crushing prison, petrify, etc. those help, but make sure you don't hit Lloyd or any of the villagers with them.

Too bad you can't just have multiple mages do a force field cycle on him.

Keep in mind that you can Heal the villagers, too.

"Though this victory came at great cost."
Only Loyd died.

When last I played through Origins, I took the liberty of encasing Lloyd in a force field the entire time. It did wonders for both his survival rate and my own amusement.

Someday I may have to try bullying him into giving me ownership of his tavern, giving free drinks to the militia and then into joining it himself, if that's even possible. If not, it should be.

It's only on pc where you can heal npcs with other means than cleansing aura, and using force field on friendly npcs isn't an option: you can only target party members or enemies.

That said, keeping everyone alive on consoles may be tougher, but certainly doable.

I could make it once with Cleansing Area (Wynne) activated almost all the time. I always go to the Circle first so I can have a wider choice when using Wynne's talents.

Going to the circle first is also handy for the fade bonuses, and when dealing with Connor.
