In my first full playthrough of the game, my characters had about 1.5 million XP by the time I got Imoen back. And I think Imoen had about 440k total XP. Obviously, I anticipated something like this would be an issue and thus planned to take and keep Nalia instead of Imoen from the start. I didn't want to be under pressure to hurry up with the main quest. But I wonder whats the earliest that a player could reasonably expect to make it to spellhold (so Imoen doesn't lag far behind) and still face everything that is to come in the Asylum, the Sunken city, and the Underdark?
How early can a player reasonably get to spellhold?

You can go from the get go but will prob need to skip the silver dragon.
Imoen has different stats if you find her later.
How soon you get her back (If you want her) depends on your class/ skill... I like to get Mazzy first then Imoen and do all the running around after when I play a Paladin or Cleric but my Wizards need more time.

Depends on what mods you're using, if any. In the original game, it's quite possible to get to Spellhold while your main char is below 1 million XP. The mandatory battles in the Underdark are not that hard, and you can always come back later to finish the optional quests (except the ones in the drow city).
On the other hand, if you are using tactical mods (especially SCSII) all mage opponents that you encounter in Spellhold and the Underdark get a huge level boost which makes those fights much harder. As for Imoen, she catches up pretty quickly and the XP difference will be barely noticeable by the time you leave the Underdark.

One of my few non-tactical installs was a no-sidequest run. I did install the Imoen romance and Improved Sendai. I used a Fighter/Thief all the way through BG1, but obviously got very few or none of the stat boosts. I possibly started BG2 at a higher level than normal. Here are my levels.
