Since all classes can use all weapons, what will the role of pistols/smgs be?

I asked Christina on Twitter just yesterday and she said pistols do count as a primary weapon (i.e. one of the two or three carried weapons). I don't really like the idea and I think pistols should have been a default sidearm in addition to the primary weapons. I also hope to the heavens this doesn't mean Shepard and co. will pull pistols out of their bottoms in cutscenes when they really don't carry any. :pinched:

Why not, they already do that in ME2 - I was just playing Garrus' loyalty mission and he pulls out a pistol twice even though he doesn't carry one.

I can't say that the weapons thing for ME3 bothers me though - I'll be quite happy with my Shotgun/Assault Rifle/Sniper Rifle Vanguard :)

It's not good and affects immersion. Squadmates should only use the weapons they're actually carrying in cutscenes. I didn't like how ME2 did it.

None of this news seems bad to me. I'm just hoping I can return to the ME1 infiltrator setup where all I use is the pistol and sniper rifle.

And if I have to take something in a third slot, can SMGs please be carried in a position other than right on top of the pistol?

Oh, and I would also happily trade both incinerate and the frankly useless AI hacking for infiltrators to get overload back.

Wouldn't really mind pistols having counted as a weapon slot, I mean the fact that any class can use any weapon type is a big improvement from ME2 where it was a bit silly running round with a machine pistol (a very good machine pistol) because magically, Shepard couldn't equip an AR or Sniper.

If anything it sounds like the pistols and SMG's are getting an overhaul with the custom mods system as well. Give me the Phalanx with the laser sight and some ME1 style High Explosive Rounds and what do I have? Pocket sniper? Or Pocket rocket-launcher?

^_^

Don't get me wrong Phoenix, I'm not defending it, just saying that it's already done in ME2 was I doubt they'll change it for ME3.

But what about cutscene weapon? Are they going to use magic riffles/pistols or what?

Really? Pistols count as a primary weapon? This is going to make pistols more or less obselete (can still see SMG have a very small niche). Wouldn't everyone now just carry an AR and juggle between a SR/Shotgun?

Gimme the Marksman power from ME1 and I'll never change weapons.

Here is an even better idea. Lets never go back to the ME1 combat system.

Well seeing as we know the weapons carry over, my vanguard will still be rocking the Claymore and Phalanx.
Phalanx can basically be a sniper rifle if you're good with it.

Same for my Infiltrator....Widow with Phalanx....the Phanax can snipe...^_^

It won't work with the ammo.

im hoping sidearms are mandatory.

also hoping i dont need to take a heavy weapon with me. i HATED it in ME2. i never used them and i always had this big thing on my back, it was stupid. it was almost as bad as in ME1 where you're an adept who only ever uses pistols yet you still carry every weapon on your back. bugged the crap out of me

Yep, bugged me too, just as much as the non-existance of class-specific interrupts. It made sense in ME1 to meet Garrus as he is using a pistol because hey everyone could use all weapons in ME1 but  it wasn't as believable in ME2. When I saw everyone using assault rifles during the Suicide Mission.. it was facepalm-worthy. I know there has to be some seperation between gameplay and storytelling but if they could try to bring back the immersive factors that worked so well for ME1.. that'd make me super happy.

Pistols are awesome. My favorite weapon after the Assault Rifle. In game they're like close range Sniper Rifles. After upgrades 3-5 shots from the Carnifex in the right spots strips a Krogan of armor. Sidearms are invaluable back ups IRL military combat.

That said I'm usually going to pack an AR and Pistol in ME3 on my non-Soldier playthroughs.

I'm a big fan of pistols but if what Phoenix is saying is true then I'm having a hard time seeing it trumping AR-SR, SG-SR, SG-AR set-ups let alone if we get 3 primaries.

Maybe marksman type ability with a mod to extend clips capacity. probably no dual pistols as that would lead to odd animations (unless it cancelled animations for that time, which might make that useless, unless a quick animation to put the second gun away was there), an "assassination" mod (but this encroaches on SR terrain)

idk its hard to envision it ATM

I'm probably going to do the same. A pistol and an assault rifle sounds best for non-Soldier Shepards.

I'll probably go Shotgun and Pistol for Vanguard but it'll take adjusting to not rely solely on the SMG when ammo runs out on the other weapons.

They should be fast loading weapon, taking 1/3 of the usual time for any other weapon.

As long as my vanguards can carry a shotty and a sniper, I don't really care.

Without knowing the stats of weapons which will very likely be different than the ME2 stats we can't say. The might be just as good as any other weapon. In ME2 they were fairly solid except for being light on ammo. Also I can;t find that Christina Norman tweet, anyone know when she tweeted it so I can see what she actually said?

pistols DESTROY armor, and smg's kill shields. this is a very effective combo. what do you mean it is useless?! Have we been playing the same game?!

I just have to say I'm not really crazy about this change,I think it reduces diversity between classes.

I guess I'll go Assault Rifle, Sniper, Shotgun & Handcannon for my Soldier.
Vanguard - Claymore, Hand Cannon
Adept - Geth Plasma Shotty, Hand Cannon
Infiltrator - Widow, GPS, Hand Cannon
Sentinel - GPS, Hand Cannon, Sniper

in my experience AR's do both roughly as fast; esp the Mattock.

The Hand Cannon can get you out of some tight spots on insanity
