Since all classes can use all weapons, what will the role of pistols/smgs be?

pistols DESTROY armor, and smg's kill shields. this is a very effective combo. what do you mean it is useless?! Have we been playing the same game?!

We don't know they will work the same way in ME3. But assuming they do, the AR and some shotguns can do just as much damage (or more) against armor, not to mention outperforming the pistol in other areas. Which leads us back to the original question--why would you take the Carnifex hand cannon when you've got the Mattock?

I can't say that the weapons thing for ME3 bothers me though - I'll be quite happy with my Shotgun/Assault Rifle/Sniper Rifle Vanguard :)

Not to mention a Sniper rifle/Assault rifle engineer...

Didn't SMG's have a higher DPS than rifles?

I think they may have with the close range damage bonus factored in.  I know that the Locust was superior to the Avenger DPS-wise.

Pistols with inferno ammo take armor down faster than any other weapon in game.
though u r right, we dont know how they r in me3.

ARs r supposed to do well against everything in the game but they arent specialized against anything either.

This whole discussion, really, boils down to how realistic to modern weapons you want ME weapons to be. For example, if we really wanted ME2's weapons to model current weapons, the pistols would ALL suck. Particularly laughable is their anti-armor abilities in ME2. In truth, lower velocity projectiles fired by handguns are monumentally ineffective against most any sort of armor protection.

This is just an example. The question is, do we want realism, or do we just want an arbitrary rock/paper/scissors system that invents a justification for using something like a pistol or SMG that would otherwise be measurably inferior to other weapons?

weapons in masseffect have been more about utility than realism.

The weapons in ME3 are customizable, though. Perhaps the pistols can be made to fit multiple roles.

I made further edits. It may be true that shot per shot, a hand cannon with inferno rounds can do more damage against armor than any other weapon. But look at those qualifiers!

"Against armor."
"With inferno rounds."

How does it perform against other defenses? Without inferno rounds? Perhaps it will have niche utility, and that may make it valuable. But honestly if it combat mechanics stay mostly the same as ME2, you'd be much better off taking an assault rifle like the Mattock (which is admittedly unbalanced) or Vindicator which are useful in many more areas than "against armored opponents, with inferno rounds." Especially if like in ME2, some fights toss enemies at you with multiple defenses. Like humanoid opponents with armor, shields, and barriers mixed in with mechs using armor and shields.

Seems to me they're going to want to give pistols some unique edge which isn't highly situational, otherwise every single class is going to wind up toting around some combination of AR/sniper/shotgun.

In ME1 I basically only used pistols with expert marksman. Add that to heat damping and inferno rounds, I could fire it all the time and gain almost no heat. In ME2 I used the Carnifax the most next to the Widow. I wouldn't mind if it took up a a spot, but it makes sense that all classes get the pistol as a freebie. The SMG however is a different story...

Well we can go ahead and dismiss the idea that pistol will have sidearm status, Christina Norman already said otherwise. No need to keep repeating that, it's not in the game. Pistols in ME3 are apparently primary weapons and will occupy one of the primary weapon slots.

The Mattock and Locust made the pistols obsolete in ME2.

Well the Mattock makes everything obsolete. That gun needs a nerf in ME3.

The Geth shotgun makes the pistols and other shotguns(besides claymore) obsolete too come to think of it.

GPS has got to go. I despise that gun.

The Mattock, too, to a lesser extent.

All guns in ME2, including the DLC ones will be back.

Presumably rebalanced, as one can assume would be necessitated by the addition of a weapon customization system. Also, the GPS and Mattock were paid DLC so they kind of had to be overpowered, or people would complain they didn't get their money's worth.

Thats a good one (for a reference point), but IDK need more info on customization specifics. It's hard for me to envision Pistols as primary's atm, but I'm also tired.

Perhaps added headshot modifiers would make it more attractive (although I think that will be a norm mod and not gun specific perhaps)...

I would say that what the pistol would need most to be a viable primary weapon is simply more ammo.

I love doing the Last Stand with only a pistol ( on insanity) :D so badass!
I actually play a lot of my Shep only with the pistol. It just makes me feel the ultimate bad ass.
And my first ME1 character, an Infiltrator, I rarely played with anything else but the pistol ( sniper occasionally, when I really had to shot at long ranges).

Mind you, with marksman maxed out, and with a decent (VII or above) pistol, pistols tended to be more like a LMG/Sniper cross, they were bizarrely powerful. At that point, you could just show a total disregard for strategy and charge into a room of 15 or so enemies and they would be dead in less than a minute, it was kinda silly.

So yeah, +1 for overpowered pistols!

The pistols outclassed the sniper rifles to the point where they
were worthless to the infiltrator class. I only ever used rifles to take
out enemies in towers in those Mako missions.

Granted the fact that you needed a lot points for the sniper perk and a good rifle to be
able to hit the broad side of a barn didn't help things either.

Basically. All the more reason to give them a little boost somewhere (The person who said faster reloading gets the cake). It's not like they're all that bad now, but passing up assault rifles (which are VERY effective right in the same range pistols are) would be tough. The reload advantage, plus AP for heavy pistols and shield stripping+low recoil for smgs with the fast reloading time.
