Sorry to post about a topic I'm sure you hear about a lot, but I've been searching google for an hour and it seems people are only posting strategies for how to beat the Arishok one on one. Since I'm a moron, and apparently made the wrong choices in not bringing Fenris or appeasing Isabela, I'm stuck not dueling the big guy. And yes, I'm also a moron who overwrote his saves and can't go back to GET Fenris.

I have no idea how to even wrap my head around this fight, but here's some details on what I'm stuck with.

I've got my main party from most of the game:
Varric
Merrill
Aveline

I'm a level 17 mage, I'm fairly certain I've got the best equipment I've got access to and so do they. Some things I've learned:

I always start the fight by summoning my dog and dropping Heroic Aura. Both seem to really help.

Putting Aveline on the stairs is damn helpful, and she stays alive so much better than she has any right to, thank god.

I heard from a friend that I should put Aveline at the bottom of the stairs, and use Varric and Merrill to mop up the guys at the bottom first. I've tried this. The guys at the bottom are unreasonably tough. They shrug off any attempt to not be aggroed, and they murder Hawke in about four hits, it seems. However, I did get this to work once or twice. Immediately after they died, the enemy mages dropped giant balls of death, and Aveline died. Then the party was mopped up in about five seconds.

So I tried a different tact, I put Aveline at the top of the stairs and ran past the Arishok with everybody, hoping to put down the mages. But then both mages aggroed on me, and the entire party ate it really fast.

I'm really at my wits end here, especially since I'm only playing on Normal. I could bump it down to Casual, but I'm too damn proud, I guess. :)

So, to sum up, good job Bioware on designing one of the hardest boss fights I've ever faced, and please god, someone tell me there's a strategy I'm not thinking of.

What type of mage are you?
As in, what specialisation/abilities have you got?

Also, what abilities do Varric/Merrill/Aveline have? That was the party setup I used for my mage playthrough and if you have the right abilities you can do quite a lot of things that can make such fights easier.

Hmm.. i'm not sure what exactly happens on normal, but in any case, you'll want to give desdemona's (nature weapon) to aveline if you bought it and your mages either nature staves or cold staves. The qunari are immune/resistant to fire and electricity so try to avoid using those spells/staves.

My recommendation would be to target the mage first. without knowing what abilities you have it'll be hard to say how to kill it fast, but if you're a bloodmage simply get Aveline to run up and stagger it and haemorrhage it, otherwise using ice-spells and disorient CCCs could work

I can't speak from experience (did the duel in my playthroughs), but the wiki has some guidance. Here's the specific bit:
"If you refuse the duel when Fenris arranges it, you receive Image IPB Fenris: rivalry (+10) and you and your party will fight the Arishok and his Qunari to the death; the Arishok may be easier to beat this way. The strategy here is to quickly take out the three Qunari from behind first. A rogue should be able to take them out quickly. Then, proceed to the other two on the bottom room. Keep mages and archers close while a warrior holds position at the base of the stairs. Wait for the rest of the Qunari to come down the stairs and have ranged fighters slow and bombard them. This should take them all out fairly quick (on normal difficulty). After that, take out the two remaining Qunari. You may want to leave the Arishok alive to loot the other bodies, and take him out afterwards."

I think the main strategy is to get the Qunari to come to you. Keep Aveline at the base of the stairs but enable some of the Defender talents (possibly Elemental Aegis, depending on what the mages are casting). You could try to disable the mages or at least keep them at bay a bit by using Crushing Prison or Petrify - that might at least buy you some time to chip away at the onslaught.

No blood magic, I took some stuff in force and some stuff in spirit healing. Good to know about the resistances, I'd been dropping Firestorms on their heads because it worked so well on the honor guard. I'll switch out my hotkeyed lightning bolt for winter's grasp, and grab Cone of Cold with my level up that always happens right before the big fight.

Do you want a detailed list of what everyone has? I can probably do that, if it'll help. :) Varric has a suicidal tendency to rush straight forward as soon as the fight starts, which leaves Merrill and I open to the guys in the back. Is there a "target these guys" button I'm not aware of?

Umm.. as I said, I'm not too sure how those resistances apply on normal. On nightmare they are immune but I'm not sure if they still have those resistances on lower difficulties..

I would assume that the vulnerabilities hold however, so you probably can drop both firestorms on their head and freeze them? Focusing on cold damage will probably be the best way to increase your damage output.

There's a 'hold position' button which means they won't move. However this will mean that Aveline won't move forward either. You best bet would just to micro the targets or set tactics if they're behaving silly.

Anyhow, for a forcemage you should be able to drag them all together with pull of the abyss such that you can either cone of cold the lot of them or get Aveline to assault/scatter them, and drop a gravitic ring on the arishok/mages to put them out of the fight (will effectively stop them from moving if you get them in the middle of the ring)

If you have things like archer's lance, setting up a brittle CCC would probably help a lot. So yeah, if you want you could list your abilities. doesn't have to be too detailed though :)

and no probs. oh and you still have another act to go after the arishok.. so finishing the game probably won't be happening that soon (but it's a pretty small act so then again...)

Hey guys, thanks for all the help.

I beat him this morning. Not sure if it was the fact that I was dropping cold magic left or right, or pure luck - Aveline moved slightly to the side of the stairs, and it forced the mages to come down to me where I swiftly murderated them. After that, cleanup was easy.
