I find with corpses that have loot (sparkling and selectable), the loot is often disappearing before I can get it.  Sometimes, I will select a sparkling corpse, but before I get to it, it stops sparkling and there is no loot on it.  (I realise that sometimes you get money without having to transfer it manually.  This is not the cause of my problem.)

This is really annoying, as I am missing a lot of stuff.  Is this a bug?  Is there a way to change this?

did you try to download the most recent patch? If so you might need to uninstall the game and reinstall it all over again. your version should be 1.04, you can check by clicking the launch icon on your desktop and hit configure, then go to the Game option and it should tell you. I'm like 98% sure though that there was a patch fixing this bug awhile back because I had the same problem.

@Plataea appears to have Ultimate Edition, which should already have 1.04 installed. Applying the patch on top of UE could have some unhappy results.

Maybe you have some 3rd party mods installed?

Thanks for the replies. I've done some more testing, and the problem seems to have disappeared. I might have been mistaken. I didn't realize you could loot corpses from the other side of the room! Perhaps I was getting money off them but didn't realize it.
