Hai Guyz,

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that everyone wore maybe one or two different outfits throughout the entire ten years of the game? I realize that in medieval times, that the average person only owned a couple outfits. But really, in ten years shouldn't even the poorest beggar have a change of clothes? Varric at least should've been able to won several different outfits. Merrill should've changed  clothes in the process in being accultured to the city.
Also, why no kids? It'd be neat if say you had a ten year old nephew or something, who in act III would be fully grown, and ready to fight at your side.

Bioware lampshaded the fact that none of the people change clothes/position in the game. "It's like you haven't moved in three years." "You've had the same hair for 7 years."
Frankly, it would have been wasted (albeit nice to see) time and resources for something that would just eat up memory for the console users. Maybe once we get the toolset, some enterprising young modder will give Kirkwall a change of clothes.

Merril probably doesn't want to change clothes though. It would be like throwing away her last keepsakes of her clan. It's not like she brought a lot to Kirkwall, and her clothing has lots of sentimental value.

As for kids..no. People had this discussion for Origins too, but giving either the Warden or Hawke a kid (aside from OGB) just isn't realistic. When would Hawke care for this kid? Who else besides Hawke would take care of it? Certainly none of your companions, even Aveline.

Merrill isn't acculturated to the city. Her obsession with the Mirror isolates her.

What surprises me is that the city hasn't changed one bit over the years. I mean really, the exact same merchants in the exact same spots for seven years? The same people greeting you in the chantry? The same annoying idiots in the Vicount's keep complaining that they have been wating all day to get in to his office. If you've waited for three years to see the Vicount he must be incredibly busy and you must be incredibly stupid (and patient).

Does it bother me? no, its not a Sims game.

Also remember EA rushed the development of the game so lack of outfits is part fo the streamlining.

You know, I was bothered at first by the lack of customizable attire for companions, but as I actually sat down and played the game, I saw the reasoning for it. Take Anders, for instance:

Image IPB

Do you see how his arms are much slimmer than m!Hawke's (especially when m!Hawke gets the Trogdor, steroids-are-good arm in the Champ's armor)? Anders looks fairly normal sized, perhaps even a bit underweight. And I think it was done for a reason. He's normal, he's the everyman. He's not an action hero, yet he ends up doing one of the most powerful, earth-shaking things in the game. I think the dichotomy between his normal, non-exceptional appearance and the magnitude of his actions is intentional. I also think the devs wouldn't have been able to accomplish that if his model had to be exactly the same as everyone else's just to accommodate a bunch of armor.

In short, I'll give up a few of my freedoms if it's done with a purpose. In this case, I think it was (or at least my lit-theory mind can convince myself it was).

As for kids...you realize not everyone wants kids, right? If you don't, well... *raises hand* And there were compelling reasons for just about everyone not to have them. Izzy may be infertile, Fenris is too obsessed with remaining ahead of Denarius to think about children (he can't even think about commitment for 6 years), Anders has his cause, Merill has her mirror, Varric and Bianca can't actually spawn as far as I know. Of them all, it would only possibly make sense for Aveline to start a family with Donnic eventually, but at the present I see her more focused on her career.

now I want to see the offspring of Varric and Bianca.

Also, theory. Incredibly obvious one, but still: Varric says that there was a girl he made a promise to in banter with Merrill about Bianca's name. I say this womans name is Bianca and she is his LI. So, if we see a Bianca, she's Varric's.

Not helped either by the fact that this guy was still waiting for the viscount THREE years after he was rather publicly beheaded... one would think that he would have heard by now?

Let's not forget about the Dwarven Noble Origin and Morrigan. Oghren also had a child. In short, many of the NPCs and in some cases the warden all procreated. I can understand not wanting to turn DA2 into Full House. However, given that the Devs were experimenting by giving the PC a family, as well as making a campaign spanning a decade(as opposed to a few months or a year). It would've been interesting to throw in at least one or two kids, perhaps maybe one you can influence(E.G. convince him to become a knight or a thief, or maybe even a spirit healer).

LOL They could have at least had the guy at the viscount complaining "I've been waiting all day...." "I've been waiting 4 years...." "Damn it, now the viscounts dead."

I remember it being established in the "What we know so far!" thread before the game came out that mages would be less muscular than rogues or warriors because it is truely more realistic. They go pew pew aside from swinging around giant swords or doing ninja moves. I was quite pleased that Anders' body frame--as well as Fenris'--was different.

That screenshot is delicious btw. <3

Well I can fix this problem. The game only spans seven. You only see Varric in year ten. So that "It spans ten years." thing was a lie.

It was kind of weird. I think instead of changing the companions outfits after a romance their looks should have changed after collecting their upgrades. They could have made the changes more drastic too. I barely noticed Fenris' little armband.

I think the only companion that reasonably could have had a kid is Aveline. She had the only stable relationship and the least amount of baggage. It might still be a possibility for her in the DLC or expansion.

Varric, being the God of Manliness, probably has loads of kids running around.

I'd rather not have to have part of the game devoted to looking after kids to be honest. Also, we've seen what the writers are willing to do to parents, siblings and love interests, do you really want to see what they'd do if your character did have a regular kid?

If I wanted to play a game where my character wanted kids, I'd play the Sims.

My mage is childless by choice. :wizard:

Charlie Brown, Peter Griffin, Lisa Simpson, Cartman, and SpongeBob Squarepants hardly ever change their outfits either.

I'm telling you, I think it's a conspiracy. They think if they give these characters the same outfits every time we see them, we won't notice. It's like they're testing us, you know what I mean? "How much do these humans REALLY notice?"

Now, I know what you're thinking. "Is Night suggesting that the Mono-Outfit Conspiracy is orchestrated by aliens?"

Yes. Yes, I am.

I doubt it is intended this way. I mean, most in-game models dont even follow concept art, let alone concept. Proof: who has the smallest arms in the game? Aveline.

A very good point, I do admit. To a major extent, the single outfit helps define the character, and makes things easy for cosplayers. Still someone as lavish and flamboyant as Varric I'd think would have more than one outfit in ten years. Couldn't he at least have the same V-neck in multiple colors?

Also, we've seen what the writers are willing to do to parents, siblings and love interests, do you really want to see what they'd do if your character did have a regular kid?

From what I've seen happen to kids in real life, no it wouldn't. Also, considering how most people in Thedas tend to die violent deaths, someone has to have kids in order to maintain the population.

I think the only companion that reasonably could have had a kid is Aveline. She had the only stable relationship and the least amount of baggage. It might still be a possibility for her in the DLC or expansion.

I don't know how biology works in Thedas, but in real life stability and (lack of) baggage aren;t necessarily prerequisites for having children. All you need is to horny people. Isabella could easily become a parent, although not necessarily a good one. She'd simply let her kids hang around taverns and brothels all day. Aveline would've made an interesting single mother. This would've added to her responsibity um..(dunno which word to use).
Still, Even if said child were a minor character. It'd still be an interesting way to use the timing mechanics in DA2.

On a final note, does anyone remember Khelgar from NWN2? I thought that the way his character developed was really awesome. The way he goes from pugilistic drunkard to an archon of Justice. Also, what about Crossroads Keep? That was also really cool.

Agreed. I suspect that in one of the story DLC we'll be getting we'll have a companion named Bianca. Or in DA3.

Yes, but he handled pugilistic drunkard well.

He's probalby the only dwarven monk...ever.

Not sure what this has to do with anything, though.
