I regret not taking Shale through the deep roads on my last playthrough, so I'm intent on taking her this time. However, when you add Wynne as a healer, that leaves no room for Alistair to tank.
So, question, will I be okay using Shale/Oghren as a tank? Or prehaps juggling them about as two off-tanks? Are there some stats/skills that I'll definitely need to spec into?
I'll play on easy if that's necessary.
If not I suppose I'll just have to use cheats.
Shale or Oghren as tank?

They are both good tanks. Durable, high damage, high hit points. I don't use Shale usually, I choose orghen instead, because he has the other skills that shale hasn't, such as berseker, chance to stun enemy, etc...

Oghren also has indomitable, which keeps him from being stunned or knocked down, which is handy, and the ability to wear armor. When Shale gets knocked down, she tends to stay down. Also, with the strength and constitution requirements for Shale's crystals, it makes it harder for her to have a decent dexterity/defense total.
Shale/Oghren can both be effective, though neither will have the defense of Alistair and his shield talents.

2H has stun immunity, but sword&shield (Alistair) has flanking immunity with shield tactics. Sword & Shield also gets defense and armor bonus with Shield Wall + Shield Mastery + Shield Expertise. If you can keep the two-hander tank alive, he'll do a better job drawing threat than a sword-and-shield tank. I haven't found Shale too useful as a tank, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Shale has been more useful for archery buff or earthen grasp.

If your looking for more survivorability (sorry for spelling) use shale. If you like the two handed abilities more and got oghren early use him. I use ogrhen leliana/zervan and wynne with a crowd control mage.

Concerning archery buff:
As of right now (11/15/10), this aura effectively adds 7 seconds to the attack speed of your archers, making them quite useless. (PS3 version). This has been confirmed on the xbox360. The bonus to ranged attack speed functions normally on the PC version of the game.
