Mike, while I really appreciate the notes and the gratitude, I also remain skeptical when considering the marketing of the game-play as noted by AFW. The game was a let-down for me because I simply feel the advertising was misleading. Considering this, "Further, I'm not only aware of the concerns, but I agree that there are aspects of DA II that not only can but must be improved in future installments. And that is precisely our intent." mostly rings hollow for me when I look back at those marketing ads and promos.

Just looking at the DA2 website claims to how the game plays, like; "Embark upon an all-new adventure that takes place across an entire decade and shapes itself around every decision you make." ,or, "Determine your rise to power from a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land." , of which most know that these were not options in the game.

I really love Bioware, I have been there buying their games and nearly all expansion packs, DLCs, etc, since Baldur's Gate and never felt another company did RPGs like Bioware. To give you an example of how big of a fan I am, I built this gaming rig right around the time of Origins release and I spent plenty on it with the intent of that game, ME2 and so on. The aforementioned games didn't let me down, especailly Origins. I could just look at that name on
the package and know I got a game that will give me plenty of quality play time. I pre-ordered games over the past 5 years with this kind of confidence, but that is no longer the feeling. I will wait on ME3due to this as well because RPGs are my thing in gaming and consideringJohn Riccitello's words recently, I am not too keen on that game's
direction.

I really do hope that your words are not a play and that "must be improved" doesn't mean even more streamlining.
Anyway, I do appreciate the acknowledgement and expressions of gratitude from you and all of the other Bioware team that has been posting and replying here over the past few months. I may not be the most agreeable guy and I can be blunt, but I do believe that words have real meanings and when spoken (or written), they should be held true to their effects.

On a lighter note, when are we getting a KoTOR 3, along the same style as the first release?

While i did like a post and its a nice breath of fresh air. I have to agree word for word with AngryFrozenWater All it is, is just words. All i can go by is the past where we were told all of this and that, but in game we found it was half truths, outright lies, or not as significant as you made it seem. I know theres the marketing to sell the game but still. Forgive me if im not jumping for joy like the rest of the people here, but i think my reservations are also well justified.

There's an old yiddish saying to the effect a dagger wound heals easier than a wound from words. Words are extremely powerful.

As for the accusations of half truths and out right lies... I saw neither when I played DA2. With the exception of the recycled enviroments, most of what I saw in the complaints was subjective in that this game wasn't DAO2 or that they didn't like the framed narrative etc.

Well, I'm happy to hear Mr. Laidlaw "speak" in more that the snippets we read in gaming articles, because, quite frankly, there were many times when his comments almost sounded like accusing fans who didn't like DA2 for being too dumb to understand how great it was. I'm sure he didn't mean them that way, but man did they get some of the Bioware community ammunition to rant non-stop since the demo came out.

As I stated before, I liked the concept of DA2, but was unhappy with execution, and since Mr. Laidlaw mentioned the problems in his post, I won't repeat them here. I'm almost certain to give future expansions, DLCs and sequels a try, though as of right now I'm keeping my expectations modest.

That's a bit of a limited view of the criticisms of DAII.

Hey, if it helps, there's at least one person who liked DA2 and doesn't want to personally murder your firstborn child.

Nah, there's a whole bunch of us who would never make personal threats. It's a game, we loved the first game of the series and many were sad/angry/(insert your disapproval emotion here) when the fears were confirmed.

But hey, even Rebecca Black got some Likes to her Friday. I'm not saying DA2 is the Friday of RPG's but it does seem to have used some auto tuning!

Comparing DA2 to Friday is worse than a personal threat.

Does this story have Griffons in it? Because if it doesn't have griffons in it I don't want to hear it.

Somewhat more seriously, Glad to see you posting again. Just ignore the idiots making personal attacks and focus on the constructive criticisms. While I did enjoy the game, I'm also looking forward to seeing how the franchise improves based on all the input.

Should be an interesting ride. Hopefully on griffons.Image IPB

I enjoyed a lot of Dragon Age 2, Mike.  Things got blown out of proportion.  I think it was expectations.  But, the reuse of areas, respawning emenimies...it's good to see you taking a look at those complaints.
But don't be afraid to experiment.  DA 2 was great, to me, because it tried to expand the world.  Did we miss the Wardens?  Sure.  But I had a great time with it.  I like Hawke and hope to see his story finished, so to speak, soon.
And those screen shots look spectacular.  DLC?  I hope.  Can't wait. Image IPB

First and foremost: classy move, and a nice post. It's good to see that you respond to the community and don't just put on the blinders.
When that is said, I do agree with some other posters in here. I still feel cheated about DA2. The promotions was definitely misleading, and I sorely regret having preordered the game. DAO had some weakpoints, but not all which was altered was changed for the better. I loved DAO and played it through multiple times. DA2 I didn't even finish. I felt disconnected, sidelined and distanced from a game I was hoping to enjoy.
For DA3: Take your time and do it right. Look at what another studio just did with their sequel. They improved everything that needed improvement and they didn't alienate their original fanbase.
My respect for you as a professional and Bioware has been stained, and it will take a lot to win me back. I know now, that the "Bioware"-logo is not a stamp of unrivaled quality anymore, and so in the future I will wait for review and probably try the game out before buying it. This saddens me, because I felt that Bioware was one of the few developers who held the torch high and showed others the way.
And I know I'm not the only one feeling this way. Words are nice and all, but they don't mean anything if you don't back them up. Your move.

I have seen Persephone posting here since... erm... the far and grey past, but although we have different views I think she is one of the few people who can describe why she likes DA2 and what attracts her to the game. She also knows that DA2 is not a perfect game. She can even be caught writing about that in a respectful and constructive manner. And what's more... She even loves TW2. So what's not to like about her?

About your honesty: AngryFrozenWater approves -100.

friendship + 100 Image IPB, personally my biggest annoyance was the time skips (except the first one working off your debt - but I just mentally mod them out)  and the recycled environments but I loved the rest of the game and cant wait for dlc/expansions/da3!!!

Things did get very out of proportion on here and nasty but very glad you are back Mike!

It's amazing to me how these threads flip from hate-fest to love-fest. Mob mentality, I guess. I am glad that Bioware is listening, and it's a shame that people make personal attacks.

I actually liked DA2, and thought the gameplay was an improvement. I loved the graphics. I actually enjoyed the "button-mashing" more than I thought I would. I liked the story, and the fact that there was more than one story line (Qunari threat and Mages v. Templars) to be concerned about. I liked the voiced Hawke. I liked the characters, well, except re-tooled Anders. However, if I hate a character (Anders, Fenris) I guess that means he was written well. Much better than ambivalence toward a character, I suppose.

There were things that needed improvement. I didn't like not being able to customize the attire of my companions, and the re-use of settings/levels, and the inability to save certain characters (Bethany.) I didn't understand the reason for the star system of ranking equipment (two identical items with different ratings???) I didn't like the jumps in time, and not playing the bits in-between. Those are my concerns. Basically, don't take away my ability to micro-manage.

Maybe it's just me, but the most fun part of an RPG is building your character from nothing. I wish DA2 started IN LOTHERING, not outside it. I wish I could have fought my way out of Fereldan. I wanted to experience the year of servitude in Kirkwall. After the deep roads expedition, I want to choose how to spend my wealth, and how to decorate my home. The minutiae is what makes an RPG fun. If actual "gameplay" should take 40 hours to complete the game, that's fine, but I want to tweak things and mess around for 100 more hours, if I see fit. It was disappointing to see these type of things removed from the RPG experience, but unlike a lot of fans, I'm not going to start calling people names because of it.

Saying Bioware or EA dropped the ball, or made poor decisions is one thing, but singling out individuals on the staff is ridiculous and uncalled for. So, Mr. Laidlaw, I'm glad you're responding in this manner. I'm glad to hear that improvements are planned. I hope everything works out well, and upcoming DLC and games are thoroughly enjoyable. I'm not going to laud praise over a few pics, or a promise to improve, but I will remain optimistic.

So, the ball's in your court now. Here's hoping you wow us with the next installment in the DA universe.

No worries. I'm sure it will flip to Hate and back again over the next few pages. Image IPB

But the positive thing to take from that is this: Love or hate, We're all passonate about Bioware products. Which I'm sure the devs greatly prefer to the reverse.

Fourthed! (Is that a word?)

Thank you for your post and updates. Yes, DA2 created backlash and all kinds of feedback, constructive and otherwise. However, there's a great deal of potential here; I think most here would love if what you say is true, and personally, I have no reason to doubt it (and I go back to the original BG in terms of fandom).

Thanks especially for the cool glimpses - and here's lookong forward to your being able to discuss more.  Hang in there - DA2 still potentially takes the franchise in interesting directions, so let's see where you guys take us.
