Despite having Neverwinter Nights since 2001, I have never really rolled with a magic heavy class. I am making a large town right now that is trying to cater for all classes in terms of equipment, from levels 1-12 or thereabouts.

I was making a scrollery, (scroll shop) and realised I didn't really know all the most used and most needed scrolls for that level range.

So, please help me, what scrolls are essential for magic users ranged 1-12 :wizard:

I suspect different folks have different views on which spells are essential. A few options...

1. Make all spells available. Folks can take what they want and ignore what they don't.

2. Make all "Non-Named" spells available. Drop any spell from the shop that is named after a mage. An old PNP guideline some used back in the day.

3. Use one of the default mage merchants found in the tool kit palette and delete spells above the level range you want to make available from the prefab inventory. Add in any spells you feel are particularly helpful in your mod.

4. Drop spells you definitely don't want players to use in your mod. Could be added to any of the options above.

Some spells can unbalance things, and some spells available can lead to abuse by certain classes, and we can hope others with infinitely more experience than I will help you with specifics. I know I played on one server that didnt drop Keen because it could be abused, or so they said. Time stop may not be one either , though lv 12 means it isnt a big concern. In wondering, just ask "what could this spell give a rogue or bard that isnt easy to balance?" Though that may lead to NO scrolls! LOL

Just a quick suggestion to do some level checks in the merchant's dialog so that the shop doesn't offer scrolls more than a level or so above the level that the character can cast on his own. It can be a problem if a fourth level mage, who might normally be able to cast spells like Melf's Acid Arrow and Web, has regular access to spells like Firebrand and IGMS. Obviously the cost of higher level scrolls will serve as a limit to a certain degree, but it's still better if the shop progresses with the character ("Welcome back! I hope you enjoy some of the new equipment I am stocking now.") and not offer items that can one-shot bosses the character is likely to encounter.
