[There's a house in the Elven Alienage in Denerim that I think fits the horror bill quite well, during the Denerim arc.

If you mean Origins I totally agree that was certainly a step in the right direction.  However even that one suffered from underuse of lighting, sound effects and could have used a bit more tense story buildup.

Others of note from Origins:

-Broodmother Sequence before Branka  (Excellent for tense buildup)
-Bonny Lem poem before the reaver village (Went back to default hack and slash pretty fast after some good foreboding scenes blood in the empty house etc.)
-Waiting for the sun to go down in Redcliffe before the undead invade.

Every one of them could have used "darker" lighting, sound, music etc to enchance the horror effects.  In DA2 horror seems nonexistent.  Closest I can think of is a certain Act2 midpoint quest involving your mother, but again lack of buildup, music, lighting, and even writing in this case (where are the indepth exposition/foreshadowing of creepy motivations for said actions for instance) hinders the horror effect, making it borderline comedic instead of truly horrible.

Sure, to see the Morrigan relationship play out, you had to get through the mirror dialogue. You had to wait for the Grimoire dialogue to kick. You then had to Go through the Circle Tower sequence, pick up the fake grimoire, then you could seek out Flemeth. After that Morrigan goes cold on you and you have to decide whether or not you want to play her if you love me you wouldn't act like you love me game.

And here, I think, is where we part company completely. Who's the "you" who's deciding whether or not to play that game?

I see...You're kind of taking what I chose to do a little too personally.
The YOU is ME obviously.
I was explaining what I had to do to get both love endings in one run. This part is basically describing the Morrigan part of that relationship feat. if you want to call it that.

The fact that you could strive to do this if you wanted to makes all the difference between Origins and Dragon Age 2.
You obviously dont have to do this, but it speaks to the depth available to you in the gameplay. And yes, i mean YOU. ^_^

One of my favorite horror moments in a game EVER.

Origins overall was pretty dark of heart rather than horror oriented if I may say so.  Sometimes that tone is all the more disturbing, because the nuance is more prominent when a game isn't excatly designed around the purpose of scaring you.
That horrifying nursery rhyme before meeting Branka just gave me chills because I really wasn't expecting that you'd be thrown that kind of Kubrickian sequence in the midst of the whole Mines of Moria feel of the Deep Roads portion of the game. Well played.:D

Origins did really well when acknowledging influences within the genre. If felt like a lot of the game, and I've said this other time before, was really meant to be a love letter to the genre and all the influences from Tolkien to Robert Jordan, to Superman, to Geroge RR Martin and so on. There were a lot of really cool familiar, cut and dry references in that game.

Dragon Age 2 on the other hand kind of lost this feel. I really wasn't sure what influences I was seeing in it and I was a times in doubt as to whether or not it was drawing influences from Origins even!
It was like it was half in a mind to be too eager to make that departure from the original game. Bad move in my opinion.
The series should elaborate on that premise, that it's an homage to the genre of Fantasy and and epic fiction, RPG and all the nerdy goodness therein.
