Hi guys,
I'm currently working on a set of weapons for NWN2 - models and textures are finished and I've created a few blueprints. The problem is that I'm not a native English speaker, so I need help with writing lore-friendly background stories for the weapons from one. If anyone's interested, just leave a message here and we'll go from there.

I have a fairly extensive vocabulary - just list the weapon types and or names and I'll give it a go and see what you like or not.

Great, thanks for such a quick reply. Okay, so it's going to be a set of punch daggers. The names I need background for go as follows:
Liberty - a two-bladed punch dagger, used by a slave to deal a killing blow to his master, starting a rebellion.
Sil'Trael's Claw - poisoned, used by Sil'Trael, a drow priestess of Lolth.
Jarall's Demise - magic punch dagger, deals cold damage.
Dragontooth - deals fire damage.
Magebane - casts Silence on strike, boosts spell resistance.
The Black Heart - nothing specific.

The Black Heart:
Forged in the boiling blood of a Devil named Elzaad - Elzaad had the blade forged to arm an Evil Champion who would become an Angel Slayer Assassin. The Champion however was never found as the Black Heart was stolen by a guileful thief on the night of its forging. The Black Heart needed to be forged on the Prime Material Plane so as to enable the enchantments to be placed upon the blade. The blade deals Negative Energy damage.

Thanks, I'm definitely going to use this. As for the others - the names (or enchantments) can still be changed if you have a hard time coming up with stories for some of them.

Just for the thought process - what makes a punch dagger "punch" ie how is it different from a regular dagger?

i think it means 'stabbing' dagger - 'jabbing' dagger, adds a bit o color.
i'll take a stab .. at an easy one: Dragontooth
Taken from the jaw of a young Red Dragon, this tooth has been fashioned into a blade with a handle - and it still emanates a warmth that bursts into flame on impact.
Edit, "a sharp blade with a leatherbound handle"

A punching dagger or Katar / Katara is used a bit differently to a normal dagger you hold it differently when stabbing, and don't cut with it, that's all. I mean, I'm no expert (or at least I am, but only while Wikipedia is online).

kevL and The Fred are right, basically such a weapon has a blade like any dagger, but is wielded differently. I'll post some pictures later, so you can see what the unique ones look like.
Thanks for your description of Dragontooth, kevL - I'm going to use that, or perhaps Morbane can use it and expand on it...

Thanks, though it may need some revisions - some of the blades are too long. I also plan on improving the textures and add more unique ones for variety.

Magebane:
A rare occurrence- A Barbarian after losing a one on one fight with a Wizard decided to cultivate his Arcane prowess. The Barbarian it turned out had what it took to be a Sorcerer and he became a potent spellcaster. One fateful day the Sorcerer/Barbarian encountered the Wizard that had beaten him. The Wizard knew nothing of his new Arcane abilities and the Barbarian/Sorcerer quickly paralysed the Wizard he cast an enhancing evocation on his Barbarian dagger and ran it through the Wizards heart with such force that the Wizard fell several metres before landing dead on the ground. The Dagger held the enchantment and remains to this day a +2 Dagger with a Keen edge (critical bonus).

Ya - they look like the Katars from Diablo II
Striky - did you put the text in the pic or were they there already?

Thanks for another description, it looks good.
I put the text there for you to see which dagger is which, the original doesn't have it - I intend to upload it to the NW vault once I pack it all together. Edit: There may have been a misunderstanding - I made the render, it say "Punch daggers by Sam Lake" because it's a nickname I use at the vault.

Wow! Impressive daggers! As you have already made some "Orient" style weapons, would you be interested in making a few more (Martial Arts weapons to be specific)?
Also, what is the poly count on those models?
Edit: Here is a post on poly limits:

Well, they're probably more detailed than they should be, most of them exceeding 1000 polys slightly. This, I assume, could be a problem, as punch daggers are often dual-wielded.
Of course I would be interested in making more, what did you have in mind?

I have a short list of "desperately needed" and a longer list of "this would be very cool".
However, before we get to that, I believe you will have some serious problems with those polycounts. The trick, as I understand it, is that modellers make a high poly model, then make a normal map texture (which keeps all the cool details) and then they significantly reduce the polys. I think Obsidian did this with their models.
I had someone help me with making these models before but when we realized the poly count issue, we had to stop.
There are folks on these boards though who can probably explain this to you better than I could (and would welcome having another modder on the scene).

I know about that, it just didn't occur to me at all when I was making the models :-) I was mostly making the daggers for myself (and my dual-wielding Swashbuckler :-)), then decided it might prove useful to someone out there. Anyway, after testing the models in-game, it seems that most of the weapons' blades are too long (for punch daggers, anyway) and the grips are too big, so I'll probably have to remake them. Silly me, testing it AFTER all models and textures are done...
If I'm going to make other models for you, I'll keep the poly count limit in mind, that's for sure.

Cool! I'm glad you have already crossed that bridge. The poly count can be a tricky thing. And normal mapping is (apparently) not that easy to learn.
As for your offer, that is fantastic. I will organize the list and send it to you in the next few days.

Hey, that's great! I was planning on poaching those models anyway...
I'm pretty sure more models of whatever type you fancy would go down well with the community, but if you're interesting in oriental models specifically that'd be extra great (we have an Oriental group, though it's just me and Banshe at the moment, so oriental models would be very popular with at least two people).

Banshe: Sure thing, I'll gladly help in whichever way I can :-)
The Fred: I don't really focus on certain "branch" of models, I do what's needed. It's just that punch daggers have been my favourite melee weapon since I first played PS:T some ten years ago. My only regret is that I didn't join the community sooner, you sure are friendly bunch from what I've seen so far :-)

That's how all the real neutral evil villains seem, until they storm into town with their skeleton army and drive a stolen punching dagger into your heart...

I do like punching daggers, though. I think I have one or two models already by someone else, so I have them in my game, but having a larger selection of models would be really nice.
