I had downloaded Mass Effect on Steam and played through the entire game (main quest and every single side quest) without a single problem.   A few days ago, however, I got a virus and had to reformat my computer.  I redownloaded Mass Effect, but when I click the icon, it shows the little rotating circle indicating that it is loading, but suddenly it stops and nothing happens.  No message or anything, the game simply doesn't launch.

I searched on the internet and apparently this is not uncommon.  However, the solutions are different.  One person said that if you right click on the Steam icon and click "Run as Administrator" and subsequently select Mass Effect in the library, it runs.  I tried that, but it didn't work.  Is there something I'm missing or will I have to reinstall the game?

Verify your Steam cache, and run the game as admin.
Its also possible the virus has done something nasty to your PC in the background, and a windows rebuild may be required.

I already verified the Steam cache.

I right clicked on the Mass Effect icon on my desktop, but there isn't a "Run as Administrator" option.  Also, I'm not going to believe the virus is responsible until my other Steam games finish downloading and I encounter the same problem.

The Steam shortcuts are unusual as they use a script related to Steam not a link to the exe file.
Close Steam and try 'Run as admin' the Steam shortcut itself (or the exe).

This issue is better addressed to the Steam forums than here.

Problem solved!  Sorry about that.

Apparently, the other games that were being installed were preventing Mass Effect from launching.  As soon as Mass Effect 2's installation completed, Mass Effect started running with no problems.

Thanks for your help anyway. :)
