On potions, gifts, armor upgrades for party members you don't use, poisons, switching up armor runes.
And do you think 15gold for 1000xp in the pickaxe quest is worth it, what about the charity any in act one.
what do you think is worth the money in this game?
Do you waste gold or hoard?

Companion upgrades are essential for me, I always buy them all. Potions and weapons drop enough that you should never need to buy them.
A few bought gifts around, but varric and merrill are easy enough to get max friendship without them.
I never thought 15gold for 1000xp, or the 1 gold for 100xp charity was worth it. Buying all the qunari swords is definitely worth it though.
There are a few purple items around that I save up for, otherwise my main expenditure is on attribute and ability tomes.

depends on what i'm planning to buy.
If i'm only looking at one to two 100+ items (e.g. ring of the ferryman and unblemished robes) there isn't much need to hoard gold.
however, in general, I aim at getting 3-4 100+ items so end up having to save up a lot more- especially since I want to get those items earlier on. I'm still weighing up buying companion armour upgrades for the companions I don't really use..
oh, and I always get all the ability/attribute tomes as well.
I personally think that 15gold for 1000xp is a pretty horrible deal but if you have gold to spare then I suppose it wouldn't be too bad.
I think i've mastered the art of been stingy- sell potions/injury kits on a regular basis to maximise drop-rates, have as many runes of fortunes as possible, especially in the slots which count (companion runeslots, shields and chest-pieces), spend no money on anything other than the unique items that you've planned on buying (which will last for several acts/whole game), and choose all the most profitable options when doing quests.
The only thing that I could potentially do is use a party setup with companions with more runeslots, but I can't bring myself to cart fenris around so I don't do that

@mr_afk/ been doing it the exact same way with the exact same problem whether to buy unused party member upgrades.
apathy what was your justification for getting them, the only reason i would use them is for testing builds but i can do that on past hawkes.
im leaning towards buying them and hoping it doesn't screw up future purchases.

If you follow the money guide, you can essentially end up in the range of +600g without using Fenris. Simply subtract the big purchaces for your run. i.e. Rogue: Stealth Boots; Mage: Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness; ect.

All the attribute or talent granting tomes are mandatory to me.
Companion armor is worth it if you use the companion. Why buy armor for Isabela if you're a 2h warrior? If you want to test different things at some point, you could just use the console to test whatever you want. All things told, they all together might cost about 20-30g anyway, so it's not that big of a deal.
The gifts are unnecessary unless you want a full romance with the person. It's easy to get max friendship with everyone and max rivalry with Fenris, I do it every playthrough. It's probably a little more difficult to get rivalry with everyone, but I'm not sure.
Poisons/potions/runes, I still haven't used the consumables very much. They are nice if you're trying for a speed run or some other challenge. Armor runes in general are junk, you could really only substantiate the need for Fire Warding or Lightning Warding for 2 encounters in the game. Again, you're talking about a total of maybe 10g spent on runes the whole game though, so who cares?
As for the Pickup Pickaxes or the donation box, what is your xp goal? Are you trying to get to a particular level by The Final Straw, or just to end the game? Unlike gold, wihch can be useful even in small amounts, any XP amount below what's needed to gain a level is basically useless. So unless you need an extra 1000xp or 250xp to make that last level, what have you really gained for that gold investment?
The Qunari swords are definitely worth it, you spend 10.5g (only 3 are bought) and get 13500 xp.

The things I buy immediately: gifts, tomes, armor upgrades.
I buy general runes like protection/impact unless I know a fight is coming up that I really need resistance for, and then I switch them up. But I rarely switch up runes. In fact, I usually just use fortune runes in armor throughout the game. I usually buy a few combustion grenades for backup but I don't really bother with poison unless I'm playing a rogue.
I don't spend gold on anything else other that some quests until the end of the game and tend to hoard it all.
As for the pickaxe thing - technically I wouldn't consider it worth it unless gold isn't an issue (for me it isn't), but I buy them whether or not the Hawke I am playing on would, not whether I "get experience" from it or not.
I still don't even know if the charity does anything, but once again I choose to do it if my Hawke would do so. This applies to all quests for me, including Qunari swords, giving money to beggers, etc.

I tend to be a hoarder because the really big ticket items don't deliver the "bang for the buck" I'd expect high ticket items to do. Then again the whole hierarchy of magic items seems off to me and I don't muhc pay attention to the star rating either.

For some reason I save up my money for big ticket items (or lesser ones at the start of the game). I don't think I've ever purchased all of the stat, level upgrades at all.
