Hey guys,
I bought Mass Effect 2 on Steam but unfortunately I can't make the game run with the sound enabled, the launcher works fine (with sound as well, as do all my other games) but the game itself won't start and gives a generic APPCRASH dialog...
I tried reinstalling OpenAL, tried disabling my sound card, uninstalling it even but even that won't work, new drivers, old drivers, checking for new motherboard drivers, nothing... As soon as I put the sound to off in the configuration utility the game runs fine.
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
CPU: Athlon X2 5600+ (2,8GHz)
Motherboard: MSI K9A Platinum
Sound Card: X-Fi Platinum
GPU: ATi Radeon HD 4870
Hope you guys know anything that might help me...!

1) Please register the game on the forums. This is not an accusation, but given the spate of users with illegally downloaded copies coming to the forums asking for help, forum registration is the only way we can be sure we are dealing with a legit copy. Illegally downloaded copies include hacked and modified files which could be either corrupt, or full of malware. Once its registered, we will be happy to help. Forums Registration here;

Hey Bogsnot1, thanks for the reply. Registered the game, below is the full problem report:
1. Version Information: MassEffect2.exe: 1.02
2. AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ / 2813 MHz / 4,00 GB
ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series / 512 MB / (driver version is not detected, am running Catatlyst 11.5)
Speakers (Creative SB X-Fi) / 6.0.1.1375
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (6.1.7600) (non SP1, 64-bit)
DirectX 10.0 (Mar2009) or later
3. My problem is that the game won't launch with sound enabled. Launcher works fine, but as soon as I click play I get an APPCRASH error message. Problem has always occured, game has never booted as long as sound is enabled. Game is not modified.
4. Things I've tried: redownloading game from Steam, verify the integrity of the game files, defragment the cache files, updating and downgrading my soundcard drivers, uninstalling sound card, disabling sound card, running in Windows XP and Windows Vista compatibility mode, downloading latest OpenAL version.

Since you have a SoundBlaster, can I also assume you have integrate audio as well? In that case it's sometimes necessary to not only turn of the integrated audio device in the device manager, but in your BIOS as well. Some games don't like two active sound cards.

In the configuration, have you set the sound to "Default", or "On"? Depending on your driver version, setting it to default can also cause crashes.
ALso, as you have an AMD cpu, you might want to check out a little program called "MassAffinity", which is designed to equallise the clock speeds of the cores in your CPU, and grant better performance in ME2.
