To get the quest you have to know who he's father is and either go to Denerim (with him in the party) or either talk to him (in camp for example). If you missed to get to know who he's father is when you entered Redcliff you can get to know it at the quest for the sacred urn

@ ilikecookiesalot:
I happened to read info abt this same quest earlier so when I stumbled on your question by accident I figured I could share the info and web page I found it on...
"...There is more than one way to begin this quest, depending upon the order in which the Warden does the other main plotline quests, and whether the Warden spoke with Ser Donall in Lothering regarding A Fallen Templar. Ser Donall's information is the first opportunity for the Warden to learn about the Urn of Sacred Ashes and get the initial clue that starts the Warden on this quest. Failing this, the Warden can learn of it upon completion of the story quest to reach the Arl of Redcliffe. In either case, the Warden's trail starts in Denerim..."

Do you have any mods installed?

Turns out you automatically find out at the end of scared ashes (even if Alistair isn't in your party) so you get the quest!

Hmmm... well, I'm glad it worked out. I wonder if this is a situation like Lilianna, where if you increase her approval too quickly, some dialogue options are skipped.

I am curious... How did you manage to get Alistair to 100% approval/adore/love BEFORE even walking into Redcliffe? LOL. I mean the natural progression of things (e.g. the storyline) practically begs one to go to Redcliffe right in the beginning after Lothering.. Although.. I mean yeah ..I see one doesn't HAVE to go there but well... just curious. Also about whether or not you have mods installed like RaenImrahl asked?

I tend to do Redcliff last fairly frequently with elven or dwarven wardens and second with mage wardens, so having him at 100% before entering Redcliff doesn't require any mods.

Actually Redcliffe was my second quest. All I did was give him all the gifts he liked up to that point (two I think) and made good dialouge decisions that boosted his approval. You can also do the same with Morrigan and get the kiss me scene while still in lothering, you don't even have to give her any gifts. It all comes down to the right dialouge.
