I've been doing some thinking about dual vs multi-class and would like others opinions on which they prefer and why.

I prefer multi-class for the following reasons:
race bonuses
no down time while accessing an inactive class
Can access two classes HLAs

Though I can see why some might like dual better:
Fighter Duals can get 5* in a weapon
First class can be a specialy class
Caster Duals can reach (or almost reach) max level if second class

One way of looking at the issue of whether to go with simultaneous classes or sequential classing is to ask yourself how much you like using Aerie as a NPC or whether you enjoy playing as a Swashbuckler. Even if you keep Aerie in your party fulltime she's never going to be a first class mage or cleric. A useful backup, but not your prime source for either arcane or clerical magic. Playing a Swashie is fun because it's a challenge to survive in the first half of SoA, but who really needs to have scores over a 100 in all 7 thieving categories. Probably the most popular sequential types are R/C and F/M. In both cases you're developing a tough magic user who can dominate in ToB.
In the end it's all about what you enjoy doing, but IMHO simultaneous is the harder road to take. Posted Image

With dual-class the end product is the goal, with multi-class it is about function throughout. In a party game, dual class can be used without furthur thought, however in a solo, it is much more intense.

Multiclass is nice but single class or dual class have a much better pace in attaining new spell levels. I used the NPC Level 1 mod to make Aerie a single class Sorceror, she is a very good spellcaster after that.

For me, it's more a matter of how I want to play my character. If I want my character to be more melee-focused, I prefer multi-class. If multi-classed with a warrior type, they will get access to the warrior HLAs, and the slower spell progression doesn't hurt so much since they are mainly interested in buffing and protection spells. Multi-class fighter/thief, fighter/mage, & ranger/cleric are all great melee builds.

If I want the character to focus more on casting, then dual class will progress more quickly to the higher level spells. A kit can also be a nice bonus. I think of it more as a single class magic user with more hit points.

There are always exceptions -- not all dual classes have a caster class, and not all multi-classes have a warrior class -- but that's how I tend to do it.

I prefer multiclass generally, for two main reasons.

If you dual, only the experience of your new class counts towards the 3M XP required for HLA's. Dualling a kensai at level 13 needs 1.25M XP, so you need 4.25M before your first HLA. Dualling at 9 only requires 250k, so this is doable.

People slag off Aerie, but she has one major perk. Simply put, clerics are abysmal battle casters. Most divine spells take the best part of a round to cast. Aerie can however wear the robe of Venca, which speeds up arcane AND divine casting. Actually the game really needs a divine armour equivalent to the robe of Venca. hmmm .. to infinity explorer I think.

With the exception of multiclassed fighter/thieves I've always preferred dual class. Caster levels matter a lot in this game, though it can be frustrating to reactivate your old class - usually meaning a period soloing and collecting all the experience for yourself.

I used a temporary character, a Cleric/Thief, while my Mage was regaining her Thief functions.
You can switch a save game between single player and multiplayer at will, the latter enables you to create one or more PCs.
