The Silent Hill series, The Fatal Frame Series, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Haunting Ground had it's moment as does Dead Space.

I love the Resident Evil series, but I didn't really find any of them scary, same with Left 4 Dead/Left 4 Dead 2.

Dead Space was fantastic as was COC dark corners of the earth, got to love Cthulhu. I dont think anything beat the first resident evil for nail biting tension as you had to be on constant guard for things jumping out at you, on the whole i loved the resident evil series too with the exception of 5 which i hated.

FEAR made me S*^T meself a few times. also as stated before the mental asylum in theif 3. probably the scariest part of a game ever....

Siren: Blood Curse, I don't think any horror game has kept me on edge as much as this game.

Clive barkers Undying, That game scared me so much, it also happens to be one of the best games ever.

OH MY GOD!  I played that game before too!  It is indeed scary.  My aunt has it for PS1.

Condemned 1, 2 was good... But the abandoned mall with the manikins moving around when the lights flicker on and off for a few seconds.. not to mention the guys that wore then manikins and hid amongst them and attacked you! Got to the point where I just started bashing them all and cut down on the me poop'in mah pants. Only way to play those games is in the dark by yourself. Or with a friend who's into it as you are.

This reminded me of another game that scared me:  Bioshock.  The paper mache manikins that come alive made me jump (also the seen in the surgery room when the lights go out).

Scariest and or disturbing events in gaming

1. System Shock 2 (the scariest game of all time, hands down)

2. Sanitarium (the 2d sprite game)

3. Call Of Chtullu (2nd half sucks though)

4. Penumbra Overture and Penumbra: Black Plague

5. Condemned 1

6. F.E.A.R

7. Fatal Frame 2 (this game has a history of giving nightmares to people)

8. Silent Hill 2

9. Undying by Clive Barker (when it first came out)

10. Thief 3: Shalebridge level (try playing that at night with the best headphones)

11. Vampire: Bloodines  glasshouse level (brrrr)

12. Deadspace

13. Alien Versus Predator 2 (as a marine)….graphics suck now..but back in the day..it was off the hook.

I never seem to find monsters, zombies, gore, etc very scary - it seems only 'jumpy' moments are capable of making me leap from my seat, yet addicted enough to continue on, . Therefore, my scariest games are Doom 3 and F.E.A.R. Dead Space was more fun than scary, so it didn't make it into that short list of mine, .

Silent hill certainly made me look over my shoulder. Who knew tornado sirens and little squeeky ghost babies could be so scary?

The only thing in a game that actually scared me was the haunted hotel quest in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. I never thought light bulbs and laundry rooms could creep me out so much.

I must say, that freaked the c^@p out me too!  Extremely well designed level/area. Who would have thunk that playing as a Vampire, you would be scared!?!

I've always wanted to play that game just to see the extreme lamitude that people we're talking about. What I find more frightening is that people in positions of power believe[d] this and are[we're] directing policy to that end, including certain current aspirants to positions of power.

Ditto, the Cradle was one of the scariest gaming experiences for me.
FEAR1 and 2,The Project Zero series(aka Fatal Frame),Vampire:The Masquerade-Bloodlines(only on certain quests), Penumbra and even Doom 3 had it's moments of terror.

Fear and System Shock 2 were both extremely well done. It is one thing to have a scary story or setting but it's another to pull it off in gameplay.
