Your choices in DA2 may not effect the overall outcome, but they DO effect the overall flow of the story. People who like to play in the present, like me, can enjoy this. While people who play just to see the end will not.

"Hmmm. This shady sister of the Chantry wants to mess with the Qunari, but I don't want to, and I have enough coin for the expedition. Refuse quest." "BUT THOU MUST!" "What the hell?"
Yeah, my choices matter a great deal.

Here is the epilogue from page 271
In closing Hawk story, Varric reflects on his friendship legacy. We learn that the champion has since vanished or else the dwarf has no desire to let on what he knows.

So what does the future hold? The mage/templar crisis has drawn battle lines, setting the scene for rebellion and persecution. Religious purges and expurgation from the Chantry, but news of Kirkwall may incite other circles to rise up in revolt.

Perhaps more intriguing, is there a reason why Hawk is now gone, like the Warden, as revealed by Cassandra in the final scenes? Do the Champion and the Hero of Ferelden have more in common than we know? And what do the mysterious seekers of truth have to do with this? Will some kind of inquisition be at the heart of events of the next Dragon Age title?

Finally, is it safe to speculate that Morrigan may play a major role in future events? Flemeth cryptic explanation for her journey to Sundermont (A bit of security should the inevitable occur. And if I know my Morrigan, it has already has.) may refer to the Warden battle with Witch of the wilds--or perhaps, an artfully conjured facsimile--at her furious daughters behest. Flemeth, less we forget, was discovered to have achieved a form of immorality by periodically appropriating the bodies of numerous daughters throughout her history. Then again, with Morrigan carrying a child infused with the spirit of the archdemon in one likely narrative eventually, it could be so much more...
Well there's the whole Epilogue from DA2 strategy guide.

Part of me also believes that people tend to like video games for their sense of "heroism" and that despite an entire story being a downer, or mind ^&^% of sorts, the ending has to provide some satisfaction and feeling of doing something epic that you can't do in RL so easily. Otherwise you get a game where you may say " That was really, really emotional and done well" and someone asks " So, will you play it again?" and the easy answer is "no." There has to be *some* emotionally payoff or you will move on to something else that can give you a newness fix.

This is another reason videogames aren't taken seriously as a storytelling medium, and are dismissed as idle entertainment/escapism. But you're right, I imagine most gamers would want this.

Wow, thanks for this!!  Fascinating!!  Especially the idea of an "Inquisition"-like witch hunt (pun not intended! LOL) for DA3. This has been something I've been thinking about: what are the Seekers intending to DO? Also love that it seems they may go back to the unanswered questions of Morrigan's old god baby. Hmm... why didn't they include this is in the game...?

If you mean the epilogue, cutting corners. If you mean the OGB, a sizeable portion of the players didn't go that route.
