If we're hating on Fenris for having some similarities to japanese character archetypes where's the 'I hate Flemeth' and 'I hate Merrill' threads?
Merrill plays into MOE/kawaii uguu archetype
New!Flemeth looks like the love child of Maleficent and Ultimecia from Final Fantasy Dissidia

I hated him at first.... then I maxed out his rivalry on my second playthrough so I could get that achievement.....
And I still hate him.

Should I ever have another play through again, I'm not gonna max him out. I enjoy running him through during the final act too much... the way he smugly slaughters people... the hypocrite.

Yeah. I didn't like Fenris either. He was so self-absorbed and narrowed on his anger, his hurt and his former enslavement in a psycho way. He had zero emotional control so I wonder how he ever survived as a slave. He just got on my nerves and felt like some borderline person, where you never know, one moment nice and a second later he wants to kill you. Such people give me the creep and I don't want such around me. He always blamed magic for the bad character of others, and did see only his own suffering and none of others. I thought he was just a jerk.

It amuses me greatly that one of the main complaints about Fenris is that he's "whiny" and "so full of hate".

I think Fenris would do well on the BSN, he seems to share a temperament with the majority of the people on this forum.

^  Nice one Image IPB  and I agree.

Now I don't hate  Fenris actually I found the guy kinda usefully  living in a Kirkwall you need a guy that can put his fist through a man.  BUT what I was not going to do is  coddly the man because of his life in the  Emperium.  Was it terrible? yes, did your former master need to? die absolutely.  No I am not going to let you kill your sister. no I will  not let you talk about my  sister  or turn Anders(as much as i want kick his ass) or Merrill over to the Templars.  So  I give the him:"You still slave becasue of  X,Y,Z   can't you see A,B,C Speech.  Cause really  I don't hate him and then he goes and sides with Meredith.   After having seeing how I put the Arishok down  he goes sides with her - okay he has a death wish... so he chooses, he chooses wrong, he gets dead.

Actually the one who thinks about turning them over is Sebastian to which Fenris replies "Uh-uh. You want to turn them in, you work it out with Hawke."
He may not like them but he doesn't seem to consider turning them in to be his job/responsibility, looking at the dialogue it seems he also doesn't turn them in because it would be betraying Hawke's friends and up until the very end Fenris has no desire to hurt Hawke

He's a good, well written character. I feel sorry for him, and I hate slavery nearly as much as him.  I gladly stand at his side to butcher every Tevinter slaver that shows his face.  When he killed Hadrianna, I didn't feel anything but satisfaction.  That woman abused him his whole life, then thought to escape the consequences.  I would've killed her too.

All that said, he's an ass through and through. He's somewhat blind; he can't see that the templars are practicing something very similar to that which he hates, yet he approves of it. He's a damaged personality for obvious reasons, however, so that might explain it.

I haven't finished act 3 yet. I know some big choices are coming about who to support (no, I didn't read spoilers per se. It seemed pretty obvious to me during the opening scene argument between Meredith and Orsino where this will end). I don't have high hopes for Fenris surviving the whole thing. I cannot imagine a situation where he'd choose to help mages over templars. Frankly, after what the Templars have done thus far, I cannot imagine anything they could do to convince me to support them, at least not the ones that belong to Meredith's faction.  Some of the templars seem like good people, but what Meredith is doing has gone too far. I don't expect Fenris to take that well and it seems like him getting a sword through the chest is pretty likely.  Maybe I'll be able to talk him down, but the damned fool should be able to see that what Meredith is doing is not all that different than what Danarius did to him without me explaining it to him.

He's part of my crew. I like him, he's a friend. But Bethany is family, Merrill is my wife to be, and the Templars have done nothing but hound both from day one. I will gut every templar bastard that comes within a mile of them. If Fenris can't handle that.....sorry Fenris.  Same goes for Aveline and Sebastian.  I like them both, but I have personal lines that cannot be crossed without it resorting to blood being spilled, and the templars have crossed that line.

To quote Shepard, they can fall in line, or step aside.  But they WILL NOT stand in my way.

Even though I disagreed with most of what he said the entire game, I actually like him. His beliefs and biased are extremist, but he actually has reasoning and experience behind that hate so I can respect that.

Though, I don't think he would ever be someone a sane person would want to romance. There are no if, ands, or buts about it, that guy is dangerous. He has several triggers which seem to set him off into murderous rage. If I recall correctly, at one point someone (I think Anders?) calls him a mad dog; I don't think that is all that far off from the truth. He just seemed unstable and as likely snap at something well meaning as not.

Huh, Fenris is actually quite subdued, he never gets set off. When Anders trolls Fenris about being a mad dog Fenris scoffs and tells him to eff off. He is a wonderful friendmance, on the rare occasion he actually does almost hurt Hawke, emotionally or physically he always apologises. He certainly doesn't run around stabbing mages all willy nilly. Image IPB Or even threatening Merrill or Anders.

That's because you rivaled him.

He's a lot more chill on friendship. Though I like his fiestiness.

Fenris is kind of an ass, but he's been through a lot so I cut him some slack. And his rival romance IS pretty hot.

I hated him on my pro-mages rogue Hawke run, but I'm flirting with him on my female mage, pro-templar playthrough. (Meanwhile, Merrill and Anders hate my gut.)

Er... abusive spouses apologize. They often promise not to do it again, too. Not saying that Fenris is an habitual abuser! I'm just saying that "But he always apologizes" is not proof to the contrary.

I don't hate Fenris. Not really. My reaction to him is kind of complicated. When I read enthusiastic praise of him that ignores or outright denies his flaws (which, by the way, are some of the best parts of his character concept, IMO), I tend to rage a bit, especially if it's accompanied by unnecessary bashing of other characters. But once I've been away from it for a while, preferably playing the game, I return to a baseline state of "Interesting character. A bit overdone in places, but who isn't?". I still can't make a Hawke that can romance Fenris successfully, but that's probably because I enjoy playing mages who support mage rights. That kind of puts Fenris on the rivalry path, which, as others have pointed out, is very different from the friendship path. So my Hawkes can care about Fenris as a platonic rival, but they just can't get past the abandonment in Act 2. If they had approached it as a friend, perhaps they would be willing to wait, but as a rival, my Hawkes tend to want to move on to someone who shares more of their goals, which usually means Anders or Isabela. And, as a platonic rival, especially as a former lover, Fenris is pretty cool.

I meant like the betrayal in the fade, he apologises for, and he regrets taking his anger out on you when the hadriana quest goes down. I do know his flaws though, he has a really haughty rival path and can be super unreasonable and rival or friend my Hawkes spens a lot of time facepalming. But in my opinion it is so interesting watching him grow the little bit he does and when treated right, like Zev he becomes an incredibly loyal companion and the only anti mage voice that has a reason to be anti mage. I am looking at you Carver and Aveline!

Carver isn't necessarily anti-mage. Under some circumstances, he will call out a templar-siding Hawke for betraying his own. Plus, he's kinda sweet on Merrill. It's more that Carver's whole life has been defined by "Mage this and mage that" and he's just plain sick of it. He rubs Anders's face in his animosity, but this is Anders-specific. Kind of like "So, you want to keep whining? Fine. I'll give you something to whine about." And with Hawke, he's always a bit of a pillock. He's a younger brother. Of course he resents Hawke, and he shows that resentment by lashing out at the one thing Hawke can't change.

Edit: For, by, on, around, at, between, pick a preposition! Three for $2.

He does this on the friendship path. On the rivalry path, he gets all in-your-face and tells you it's your fault for bringing him into the Fade in the first place and after Hadriana, he just blames the mages again. So no, Fenris's apologies are path dependent. Not that that's a bad thing! If you're trying for rivalry, the last thing you want is to start racking up friendship points, and having him reward you with rivlarly after a nice friendly chat would be rather jarring. So yes, if you rival him, his hostility after Night Terrors and after Bitter Pill makes perfect sense, but he doesn't apologize.

Um.  *Raises hand, looks at 1721 page Fenris thread*  You guys with me on this one?

In other news:

"Sneaking into the Hawke estate....Heavy risk.  But the priiiize..."

"What's your intention, Fenris?"

Yeah, I know, it's not even funny anymore. *Snerk*

Then you're doing it wrong.

I don't hate any characters in DA2.  Anders and Fenris can be incredibly annoying, though.  The forums complain that the male love interests of previous games were too whiny.  Then DA2 comes along and we have the broody elf and the ... well, Anders is pretty self-explanatory. It's worse!

After trying the Fenris romance, though, it's hard not to find some afffection for the guy, but he's still far too cynical for my tastes.

I'm just glad Isabella and Merrill are romance options for Female Hawke, or this game wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable.

At first I hated him. He was an elf and a whiny one at it, had to tell him to zip it more than one time. And also what the OP said that Aveline was better tank than him. Then he told me how he scaped from the mage and that thing in Seheron and stuff.

And then I found myself liking the pointy eared bastard, or at least respecting him. When he sided with Meredith I told him "Would be better if you were on my side" and he said " 'k mate" and no questions asked or anything I felt like he had changed a lot.

And I begun to see him as a man for the first time.
