I just did this quest, and lost two hours of gameplay because the game didn't bother to save in between me walking around the keep and doing everything in Amaranthine. The problem was the the templar commander lady was simply invincible... How did that happen? And how can I prevent it from happening next time?

Eh, that has never happened to me...

You could always just use the console command "runscript killallhostiles" to finish her off if she isn't dying.

You can manually have the game save your progress. No need to wait for an autosave.

Rylen, or whatever her name is, shouldn't appear to be invincible. She does seem to resist anything a mage throws at her, but just a few hours ago, my arcane warrior was able to solo her while using a staff, on nightmare difficulty. With a full party, she shouldn't be an issue, since against non mages, templars are just "a regular guy in a metal suit". Perhaps if you need more fighting space for the battle, lure her out of the small room to the bigger area with the exit.

@Arthur: Well obviously you can save the game manually, but how often do you do that anymore? With increasingly numerous savegame points in games, you get out of the habit. Yet when I needed one, there wasn't one (entering the city really should've been one).

But that aside, she really is invincible... when I hit her, there are negative blue numbers of her head. No matter what I hit her with. That obviously shouldn't happen, but I wonder why it does.

@Zjarcal: Thanks for the advice, I'll keep that as a back-up plan.

I save manually in case I run into any bugs that mess up my character or the whole playthrough. I used to play Oblivion back in the day, and if you didn't have multiple files and save every 5 minutes, then you were asking for trouble. It's just nice to have backup. In this instance, I would have manually saved just prior to entering the building.

It would be nice to see more autosave points. I liked how in Orzammar, you'd get an autosave everytime you changes areas, but that area seems to be the exception.

What weapons are you fighting her with? She does seem to have extremely high magic defense, so I'd avoid magic spells or weapons with elemental damage.

Unless you are soloing her with an arcane warrior, she shouldn't be more than any standard encounter. I'm not even sure she's at boss rank.

Ah, I found it's because I had been messing around with the armor she's wearing. I hadn't been able to test it yet, but I did export it, making her invincible. Whoops! Problem solved now though.
