Everything else that lives underground is primarily pale, so why are the Darkspawn different?

Women of the elven, dwarven, human and qunari races generally have a single pair of breasts, so why are the broodmothers any different? :P

Considering that the Darkspawn don't eat? I have no idea. Maybe they lactate taint.

Hey, I never said Skeletor was bad! He's one of my favorite recurring characters on Robot Chicken :P

My comment was more about originality (or lack thereof, in my opinion) of making the new darkspawn look more like Skeletor than anything else.

Wait...what does TAINT have to do with aesthetic differences?

Madness.

Maybe that's why they grow extra teats. To allow Darkspawn to suckle taint and grow strong.

I largely agree with the OP, I really want the Darkspawn and Elves back the way they were and I would have liked to see a few Sten-like Qunari in Kirkwall just to highlight the difference between the new and old. The Qunari who gave us a quest in Act 3 would have been perfect for that model.

The new dark spawn look is a step backward. Maybe they were trying to go for a Scorpius look, only ended up some how less scary than Harvey. And that thing they do waving the swords above their heads made it hard to take them seriously. No respect for them now.

Qunari I'm fine with, though the Arishok was a bit reminiscent of Legend. Not that I'm cmplaining there - if the villian in Legend had looked like the Arishok it would have been a better movie.

The change to the elves I'm not a fan of, but I'm not gonna cry too much about it. They look more cartoony, but if you want to make elves even more distinct from the humans I suppose it's a way to go. I just thought it emphasied the tragic stupidity of the prevalent racism against them in Thedas that elves & humans looked so much alike.

Maybe there are both bronze-skinned and ashen skinned Kossith.

That's what Mr.Gaider suggested when the concept art of the "new" kossith made rounds for the first time.

Maybe the hornless Qunari also tend to be darker skinned? Though what's with the purple Qunari in the races line up?

They could just come with different skin tones, and more than two of them.

So they can be purple, grey or golden? What determines this?

The Qunari redesign is great, and the Elf redesign is okay (some people dislike it some like it, some don't mind it etc.) but the Darkspawn redesign was a bit silly I reckon, the old redesign doesn't really seem like a copy of anything to me.

I suppose it's not too torturously horrible, it's still bad though and I wouldn't mind it changing back...I just wouldn't be able to take them seriously if we ever have to face a blight in another Dragon Age game (and I'm sure there will be another blight sometime.)

Genetics, probably. ^_^

The Qun.

Honestly I don't know but should we really be assuming that a fantasy universe's world follows our laws of skin tone and biochemistry and whatnot?

Especially for the Darkspawn, a completely new race of creatures who carry a disease they are immune to?

Darkspawn aren't immune to the taint. Being born of it merely alters the way it effects them. For example, the taint connects the Darkspawn to each other, the Wardens and allows them to hear the call of the Old Gods. The taint is theorized to be what makes the Darkspawn mindless since weakening the taint allows them to regain higher brain functions.

As for genetics and pigmentation, I prefer some form of consistency within the world. I believe that the Darkspawn should be pale. The DA2 looks reflect that. Though I would like Bioware to make some changes to diversify specific models. And technically, my favorite design is that of the disciples. Pale skin and all.

Well, that isn't exactly out of realms of possibility -- Typhoid Mary comes to mind.

well what if the Taint is what's making their pigmentation look different? If it's been theorized that it's what makes them mindless, why not also theorize that it affects their pigmentation too? And by weakening the Taint and making them Disciples, you make their pigmentation work the way it should.

AKA Disciples:

Its possible, I suppose. Looking through the various named ghouls on the Wiki, there doesn't seem to be a constant when it comes to the effects of the taint. Ruck doesn't look much different at all, just mentally altered, Hespith has bags under her eyes and what looks like sores, Adria looks like a walking corpse, Utha looks like she has the same symptoms as Hespith, just further along, Seranni looks fine aside from a few skin blemishes while Tamlen loses his hair and turns jet black, but has no blemishes. Still, I think the disciples are the best design for Darkspawn.

Sign me up OP, I've said this since they announced the new darkspawn look, horribad.

I'm all for the "old" darkspawn look, not the new skelefluffs.

@SoLD: Huh, I never really paid attention to the eyes.

@Kilshrek: the only new design I like is the Hurlock Emissary. But before the one thing I never noticed was the gimp, so that needs to go too. I could go without knowing that Darkspawn practice BDSM in the Deep Roads. It's just one mental image I don--- **** never mind there it is...

I really didn't understand where 'ORC' came to mind when they saw the first Darkspawn. THAT is no orc. And as a super duper luper Tolkien maniac I am disgusted by how shallow people are when it comes to fantasy. The Darkspawn were no were near orcs or anything to do with it's cousins. Goblins, trolls, hobgoblins, uruks... they look NOTHING alike.

Everytime I saw a DS in DA;O i saw an Orc, now they have their own distint look, which to me makes them more menicing. Think of the pain a Human or Elf goes through, their skin changes color, their jaws break to accomidate a new facial structure, that all seems more believeable to me because they are not Orcs.

No one else seems to think about it, but have a look at the pictures of the Darkspawn's face and compare it to a humans, their faces change shape when they become infected.  Also look at how wide they can get their mouths when they scream, it's not humanly possible to do that as a human/elf.

The only pheasable way for them to do that would be if their jaws/skull break and then reform itself in a different shape to accomidate the change of the taint.

Honestly, have a think about it :)
