Darkspawn, we ask you to change to your old look. You are too cuddly now.

I wouldn't mind the old emissary design if they at least made them look a little different than a regular Hurlock.
Either design to me I'm fine with.
I have to ask though, what's the lifespan of a Darkspawn? We've seen an Ancient Hurlock once, but we killed him. Do Darkspawn die naturally? Do they live forever?
You mean a hat of blades isn't enough? TF 2 would cry.
But that's a million dollar question. Though I don't think a scholar has managed to embed himself with a band of darkspawn to observe their life cycle and all that.

The old emissaries were specifically Hurlock Emissaries. Which is probably why they looked like hurlocks
The new ones all have pointy ears, suggesting they were Sharlock (Shriek) Emissaries.

So the darkspawn have human, elven and qunari representatives in DA2, but no dwarves.
Why so much hate for dwarves.

And I know the feeling. Xanthos Aeducan went unmentioned. That made me cry for a long time. But hey, at least you don't see any poorly developed Dwarven citizen in DA2! They're all human or elven!

Well, if DA Legends is any indication, the Genlocks now look like gorillas.

Both designs are bad in my opinion, but the new ones are at least slightly less generic. The only thing I really object to is retconning the emissaries.

God.. seeing that pic I feel there needs to be some clown music playing. One of the worst designs ever made. The art team for DA2 needs to be beaten with a large dead trout.
EA hates dwarves SoLD.. heh.. your nick abbreviates to SOLD, anyways yeah. I bet they think its racists against little people or something

Are they really genlocks and not just say an Armored Ogre?

ah. well I want them to be human-ish in design but maintain a difference between both humans and not be a generic copy of a Hurlock. Give them a frail appearance like the new ones have to emphasize how they are better at magic than combat, remove the pointy ears, and remove the gimp. But they are also clearly a Hurlock.
At least for the Hurlock Emissaries anyway.

Legends lists them as Genlocks. And they don't look like orges. They look pretty much like evil gorillas. Which is kind of weird, though I can kind of see it. They emphasize the compact strength of the dwarf and exaggerate it so they have huge, muscular arms. Still weird though.

They were designed by creationists. You know, breeding fallen angels with evil humans I believe caused this .

Horrible hurlocks are enough in one game, thank you very much.
No need for goofy genlocks or silly shrieks.

I searched and dug up some Shrieks concept art that were going to be used in DA2

I do get what the designers were trying to achieve with a more cohesive world/creature design but in this case I agree they made a fairly substantial mis-step and I wouldn't agree the originals were too similar to LoTR - but eye of the beholder and all that.
Wait, what? How would a new art concept have made for a more cohesive world/creature design? What was wrong with the darkspawn graphics from Origins that those DIDN'T achieve such?
I don't find the new darkspawn "cuddly" or any such silliness, but they just seem overly cartoonish. I can see why the Origins darkspawn would strongly remind someone of Lord of the Rings Orcs, but that doesn't personally bother me, especially since the resemblance isn't so strong that they're carbon copies. At least they actually did look like monstrous, corrupted creatures. I would agree, though, that since they are underground dwellers, their skin should reflect this and be extremely pale. That is one detail that DA2 gets right, although they definitely don't look anything like the frighteningly horrific, rotting, blighted creatures we saw in Origins.
