Darkspawn, we ask you to change to your old look. You are too cuddly now.

Yeah, but if Shrieks(tainted elves)can be Emissaries, shouldn't they establish that by calling them Shriek Emissaries, since a regular emissary is just a Hurlock.

No, a Hurlock Emissary is a Hurlock Emissary. Just like a Genlock Emissary is a Genlock Emissary. Honestly, Shriek Emissaries make a hell of a lot more sense than Genlock ones, since dwarves can't use magic. I'd imagine that there are rare cases of Ogre Emissaries as well.

I wonder if David Gaider will ever explain how Genlocks can be Emissaries. That should be interesting.

It's the Smoke lyrium in the water.

Also, I want to see an Ogre Disciple Emissary. That will make me extremely happy.

The
old Darkspawn didn't look like generic orcs, they looked like Uruk-Hai.
Which fueled a lot of the generic Tolkien fantasy complaints.

Really?
Cause I think the new hurlock armor and helmets looks extremely close
to the Uruk Hai armor in Peter Jackson's LotR movies. Much more so than
Origins.

Zanallen wrote...
Second, why were the old
Darkspawn so dark? They live underground. No light. They should, by all
rights, be pale if not albino. Similar to their new look.

Its a fantasy universe. Why are dragons purple? Why are dwarves short? Why do elves all of a sudden not wear shoes?

Third,
I don't feel that their old look really pushed the fact that they are
supposed to be born from a corrupted human woman. They look more like
decomposing lizardmen than human Darkspawn.

Thats my
issue with the new hurlocks though, is that they look more what I'd
think of as ghouls, not 100% pure born from a Broodmother darkspawn.
They look too much like a nutjob that rolled around in some chalk dust
and started jumping around like a chimp. They should look significantly
less human than they currently do with only vestigial remnants of their
humanity apparent. They're supposed to be monsters, not zombies.

This^

Yes, please BioWare, if the darkspawn ever show up at all, again, and I am assuming they will (They were killed off). Please, bring back the old designs for ALL of them. Seriously, they aren't scary at all. They make me laugh, and then get sad for the diseased and putrescent beings they were.

The old design didn't make any real sense considering the lore and environment that they came from. Personally, I would like Bioware to refine the current design or else create a new third design.

Imho they made perfect sense in the first one. They were rotting infected creatures that lived underground for most of the time. How on earth did they not make sense lore wise.

The Darkspawn are a race of mostly-humanoid tainted creatures that dwell in the Deep Roads.

And this^ They didn't come from a human woman, they came from a Broodmother. And quite frankly, I thought the human Broodmother in DAA was a little too human looking still. She has been violated, force fed corrupted flesh and made into a monstrosity. The mouth thing was cool, but she was way too human looking still.

Their basic body shapes remaining were enough for me to understand which species they came from. They are monsters not even necessarily corrupted humans turned into darkspawn. So they made sense to me.

And the clean Tolkien fantasy armor for the new ones hacked me off too. The Darkspawn in DAO had armor that looked stolen, or crudely put together. The new ones apparently were all the talking ones the Architect made since their armor was made well.

Cuddly certainly isn't the way I'd describe the DA2 darkspawn, even if I do think they look quite ridiculous.

It's so cute! Can I keep him?

Anyway, even a genlock was more frightening than the new Hurlock look. Incidentally, what do people think of the new Ogre look?

Are you kidding? I love DA 2's Darkspawn! It turns them exactly into what they should be! Power ranger Villains!

I mean the generic rank and file are like the puddies, then the Ogres and such are the episodic badguys!

The new Ogre looks a bit less frightening than the previous one. Granted, not to the extent of the re-designed Hurlock, but still. And where were the Genlocks?

This: s614.photobucket.com/albums/tt227/Mr_Jack_7474/GW%20LOTR%20Mafia%20Book%20I/ looks more like this: na.llnet.bioware.cdn.ea.com/u/f/eagames/bioware/dragonage2/assets/gallery/concepts/hurlock-01-p.jpg than this: social.bioware.com/wiki/dragonage/images/thumb/7/76/Hurlock.jpg/300px-Hurlock.jpg to you? Interesting.

Its a fantasy universe. Why are dragons purple? Why are dwarves short? Why do elves all of a sudden not wear shoes?

That's a crap explanation and you know it. Look at the other creatures that live completely in the Deep Roads. Nugs, Deep Stalkers, even the Dwarves for the most part. All paler than the Darkspawn. Hell, nugs are basically albinos. If a creature spends the vast majority of its life underground, it is going to be pale. Pigmentation works the same way with all other creatures on Thedas, why would Darkspawn be suddenly different?

Thats my issue with the new hurlocks though, is that they look more what I'd think of as ghouls, not 100% pure born from a Broodmother darkspawn. The original Hurlocks don't look human at all. They are supposed to have a link to the race they are born from. Instead, they looked like lizardmen. They don't look like they were born from anything close to a Broodmother. As I said before, Bioware should tinker with the current design, changing animations and textures, or else design something new. The old design is silly.

If you hadn't said Power ranger villains and what came after, I would've been like "can't tell if serious".

Instead, I'm all "LOL".

Anyway, regarding Ogres overall, their new look I can tolerate but I preferred the purplish look they had in Origins.

Actually power rangers was the first thing I thought of when I played the demo and saw the darkspawn. But it wasn't because of the look, it was because of the way they ran in waving their swords over their heads.

I don't think the new ones look cuddly, but I do think the original ones looked more intimidating.

And what's with the emissary's gimp thong?

That's cause things that live underground generally don't have a whole lot of frickin' melanin.

Darkspawn are dead rotting creatures, for skin to become more albino like they would have to for a start ~be alive and they are not. The skin is dead hence the rotting and rotting skin does not change colour pigmentation due to lack of sunlight.

I'll tell you one thing, women would kill to have an anti-age/wrinkle cream like the darkspawn have obviously discovered between DAO and DA2.

Whatever it is, he clearly enjoys it. An awful lot.

edit: as far as the changes to darkspawn go, i'm not bothered so much by the appearances but rather by how they changed the dynamics of the whole species. As the BioWare artists put it in one of the interviews, the darkspawn was effectively changed to pushovers which the player is supposed to easily gank by dozens so they feel "badass", but they made the emissaries taller so there'd be some modicum of threat to the now-clownshoes gimp enemies. Which is... well, let's just say defeating a swarm of pushovers doesn't work for making me feel "badass" in the slightest. It makes me feel like a guy mugging local playground for the kids' lunch money.

So, i'd rather they reversed that change and made the darkspawn again reasonable enemies on individual scale. So that when i beat the dozen of them it actually can feel like i pulled off something.
