Darkspawn, we ask you to change to your old look. You are too cuddly now.

Apparently the Architect, erm the Conductor, oh frak, whomever made sure they have a really good dental plan. And then they all trapsed off to LoTR and took a tour of Gothic Horror Games and decided to get plastic surgery.

Now I really want to see an intelligent Darkspawn called the Dentist yelling at a bunch of non-intelligent ones something along the lines "Yes, yes, just because you are bloody monsters doesn't mean you shouldn't brush your teeth."

Considering the fans of DAO kept complaining how the Darkspawn reminded them of Orcs and Uruk-Hai and whatnot and wanted them to change it, and now are upset they changed it, Bioware's trying to change it back.

Gremlins were in dire need of a redesign though.

The fanbase seems to be a bit wishy-washy I think.

edit: I don't know what the fans of DAO actually said about the Darkspawn, but that's what I keep hearing about them. That the fans said they were LotR-esque. I wasn't on here when DAO first came out.

Video gives a better sense than a still image capped from video, he actually doesn't look much different from the other new hurlocks by my reckoning. Aside from the pointy hat. His chest piece still has that.. hurlocky design.

I just hope his back is covered properly.

I was never wishy washy about the darkspawn, and I am a huge fan of the movies and the books (never played the game, which is why I didn't know about the Mouth of Sauron. I apologize to those who play things like Silent Hill, apparently this Hurlock doesn't look like a demon) of LoTR.  And they need to go back to the orginals instead of trying even harder to make them LoTR knock offs.

Edited to say, that these are screen shots, and the trailer, but they dont' look like darkspawn to me.  I still have a wait and see attitude. But from what I see so far, still not darkspawn, just LoTR.

Ery I have to ask, what don't you like about the new look of the Hurlock Alphas? The sharp teeth? Hurlocks in Origins had that. The blood on the helm? Darkspawn have been described as savage creatures.

What specifically about the new designs don't you like?

First they don't look like darkspawn. I like the look of the originals. Now, the armor of the old could have been less gold and shiny that's for sure. But these darkspawn are suddenly yellow or tan. I hate the gorilla movements (despite, like you Eth, liking primates). I hate the weird faces. They don't look tainted they look like trolls. They don't look tainted, just silly.

Am I really supposed to be put off by the gibbering mouth? Bufffy had demons who looked like that. And quite frankly, I have years of art school and I never looked at the old darkspawn and thought..hm Uruk from LoTR. I definitely think that with these new ones.

They look cartoony to me. They don't make me afraid to touch them. In fact they might make my Warden fall down laughing and hurt herself. It's like they're trying too hard. If people thought were too much like Uruk and LoTR before, well guess what. you just got more of it.

And my major problem, it is one of those things that got a 180 from DAO, when it didn't need it. DAO's has its flaws, and the darkspawn design wasn't one of them. Now they are a cartoon. Geeze, let them die already.

The only darkspawn design I never cared for (but could live with) was the Architect's who looks like some kind of Abomination rather than a darkspawn (I got spoiled by Gaiders description I suppose). Again, trying to hard to be flashy.

They're sort of yellow-ish, which I guess Bioware did to reflect pigmentation a bit better if they're living underground. Normal humans and humanoids would be pale. Maybe the taint makes them yellow? It seems like the taint is causing them to suffer from Jaundice.

The Hurlock in the Ostagar cinematic did a scream much like the Alpha did.

I find the Genlocks and the Alphas to actually be fearsome. I have to ask, if these were the original designs, what would be your outlook on them (for the Alphas and Genlocks I mean)?

The Ogres were barely changed so they don't look like a cartoon. They do look horrible however compared to the old Ogres, who were closer to looking like the Kossith than the DA2 ones.

Gremlins didn't scare me one bit. They didn't have the excuse of Chelsea grins to explain the "evil smile", and they were just laughable.

I still maintain that the Alphas in Origins were wearing a full helm and we don't know what exactly they looked like underneath. Not the best reasoning for the new design, but it's enough for me.

What if they changed the Hurlock grunts back to the Origins look, kept the Hurlock Alpha and Genlock redesigns, went back to the DAO Ogre designs, didn't touch the shrieks, and tweaked the new Emissary look to be a bit more human-like?

Would that be good enough?

That would be better. I still despise the Genlock. Sorry, didn't think "Gremlins," and I thought their grin was creepy. The Alpha Genlock stil too big, moves like a gorilla, and looks like  a LoTR troll (sans the cloved feet and the nose job).

I could live with the Hurlock Alpha (now I wish I hadn't seen "The Mouth of Sauron" ROFL).  But the yellow tan skin thing really needs to go. The ogres need to go back too, they looked like the Qunari now look in DA2. But the ogres in DA2 look like zombies with horns and too much armor.

Not touching the Shrieks would be good. And put the emissary design back too, and get them out of the S & M "Gimp" outfits. Again, creepy and foreboding in DAO, looked ridiculous in DA2.

I don't know. DA2's qunari?

It seems to me the DA2 ogres get the ears and brow ridges more similar to the kossith than DAO's.

I think the way noses were implemented on hurlocks and ogres in DA2 was probably ill-advised however... coincidentally, the new genlock appears to have more of a DAO-like nose still, which is to say, not much of one at all.

What color would you say his skin tone is? Looks kinda yellow to me.

Off topic:

Oh yeah, and if anyone starts mentioning DA2 having spikes on armor, they need to look at this Genlock's gauntlets. Another thing that was present in DAO, yet people act like DA2 was the first to do it.

That's actually one of the things that pisses me off about some of the people on here. They act like DA2 did all these "bad things" first yet forget (or they do know) that DAO did some of them first.

In terms of skin tone, yes. Kossith are naturally grey and paint themselves with red paint.

In terms of facial structure, for the most part. Maybe add in a nose if it can be used and implemented in a good way, but DA2's Ogres look like the face and nose and everything were bunched together too much.

DAO's Ogres just look better designed, and I would prefer to see them over DA2's Ogres.

That's not to say that some of what DA2's Ogres have isn't better.

Kossith can be gold or grey skinned... DAO's ogres are almost purple.

I do think the nose actually gives him a kind of Mr. Potato Head quality and perhaps he isn't as intimidating per se, but aside from that in terms of sheer similarity I would say DA2's is closer.

In that light (looks like torchlight which is a high yellow saturation) it looks olive/tanish. But In the wilds, and at Ostagar (the body lying on the ground) lookes green. The action figure was green too.

And in the interest of comprimise, I could live with the new Genlock (barely) I will be laughing my ass off at it. I am just not buying this new art direction. Seriously, it really might be a game breaker for me. The whole light tan gorilla LoTR troll is just killing it for me.

@Filament Still prefer the DAO ogre (though they both look like the new Qunari, I'll give you that) And thanks for the pics!

Edited to say: as an artist, the green color I refer to is "olive." So the Genlocks of DAO are little grinning olives! ROFL! Quick stuff them with pimento or garlic!

Well I just meant like horned kossith skin color.

lol Mr. Potato HeadPosted Image

I'd like to see the faces look not so bunched up and the skin tone be completely gray or gold, depending on the broodmother. But an amalgam of both is not needed.

Like, if a horned Kossith became a broodmother, she should churn out horned Ogres with gray skin. Likewise, if a hornless Kossith became a broodmother, a hornless Ogre with gold skin should be churned out.

The problem with DA2's Ogres is in how bunched up the faces look, so because of that DAO's Ogres are preferred.

Actually, they look the same color as Kirkwall's Lowtown.

They did not look that orginal in DAO.

Take off the hair, there is not that much of a diffrence, the Hurlock looks where not orginal, complaining that the Genlock and Hurlock alpahs are not orginal and not complaining about the DAOs is not just being bias, it just makes oyu look like a fanboy/fangirl.

But trying to argue with you about DA2 goes nowhere. You are so deadlocked on hating DA2 and calling anything trash that nothing the team does will please you.

Well better that than a human sized gorilla in Kirkwall tan. Apparently fighting Genlocks didn't make you feel like you were fighting a giant cucumber back then, just a gremlin (again I can see it, but as an artist, wasn't what I thought when I looked at them). LIke I said, quick stuff them with pimento!
