Problem here being, hurlocks weren't meant to have any lips. Or at least from any of the close ups in DAO showed, them buggers don't got no lips, so where did they come from in DA 2. And I would really like the number of their orthodontist, because they had some messed up teeth in DAO, but now have pearly whites in DA 2.

Hurlocks are also meant to have pointed teeth. They did in DAO, which reflected the lore in the DA books, but not DA2.

Ogres were not blue as depicted in the books, but there was a definite purplish sheen in DAO. Also gone in DA2.

I'd need a good closeup of those teeth to confirm :P

No need to provide one. Please. XD

I think the Genlocks just need some sharp teeth and to be completely gray. I think that would fix some of what people don't like about them.

But I love the new design of them ^_^

Not really. They'd need to get rid completely of the Donkey Kong vibe before people will change their mind about them.

Do you mean the way they move? If so, I wouldn't mind if they removed it, but imo it works for them and I like it, as I think they move like that because of how tiny their legs are and how they might not be able to stand upright

Just so this doesn't get lost in the shuffle

hmmm... I might approve of the new Hurlocks, but only if they had these traits:

1) More bloody, dirty, tainted, and less shiny white
2) Had different noses (some being torn or ripped), and have some who have the original Hurlock type nose
3) wore armor that actually looks like the original Darkspawn armor, or something that looks half-assed.
4) had sharp teeth again
5) had monstrous tattoos again
6) lose their hair. That made them look more like Uruk-Hai for me, so the hair needs to go.
7) appeared in high level of detail on all platforms.

and to go even further

For Ogres, they need:

1) Less mushed up face
2) Completely gray or completely purple
3) Soulless eyes
4) A return to the DAO teeth that they had. There is a difference between the two sets of teeth

For Genlocks:

1) Tinker around with the color scheme. Most people would like them to not be beige. Me? I couldn't care less about their color. I love the new design. The Genlocks in Origins were the only ones that needed an overhaul, and the new design works
2) Make the Genlock Alphas taller than regular Genlocks like they are now, but smaller than Hurlock Grunts. Or just make the Hurlock grunts taller than the Alphas, and the Hurlock Alphas are also given a height boost.

For Shrieks:

1) a return to the DAO style (color scheme and sharp teeth included)
2) drop the protrusions from the old style
3) move the ears down
4) give them a more elf-like body. Looking at the old design, they seem to have pointed feet, while the new design has more normal-esque feet.
5) make their heads more narrow and have less of a giant forehead.

I figured I should bump this thread so we can again have a discussion on how to improve the Darkspawn. The topic is still valid, and bumping this thread is better than seeing 20 new threads pop up.

If nothing else, I just want them to change the Hurlocks - Maker's Blood, the things look like freakin' harlequins. If I had a horde of those things running towards me, I'd think the circus was coming to town or something.

Also, I wasn't aware Shrieks were even in the game. Do you have a screenshot or a piece of character art for them?

I think the Hurlocks could definitely be improved. It took me a while, but there are some similarities in their facial design and that of the Disciples.

The Disciples however are far better. But if the Hurlocks are improved in the way I listed, I think we'll have a distinct look for the Hurlocks that is also frightening. The armor also needs to be improved to look more half-assed yet effective. I'd actually prefer to see something like the armor the Hurlocks in the Warden's Calling trailer wore.

As for the Shrieks, they weren't in the game itself, but a while back I was informed about this screenshot. It may be bogus, but I don't know:

he has hair.

Also, this is what I'd expect a human male to eventually look like if they became a complete Ghoul, with some scabs added in.

Weird. I don't know that I've ever seen that before. Where'd it come from?

Anyway, yes, I agree. No hair.
Though that picture does make the new design seem far more appealing than it actually was in-game.

I don't have a problem with them having hair. I'd have liked the genlocks to have that patchy beard going on from the concept art. Though I don't think any of them have hair in-game.

Bleh. The skin needs to be darker on all of them - and I just don't like the apish Genlocks at all. I wish they'd lose the gorilla arms and revert to a more dwarven size and stature, as in the original.

And the Shrieks don't look all that bad, but could use some tweaking for sure. I also concur on the armor needing to look much less sophisticated.

Out of all of them, the Hurlock Alphas are the best:

Image IPB

That is a darkspawn - the vilest and most malevolent creatures in all of Thedas. It horribly mutilates and mauls its victims. It rapes and forces women to eat their own kin. Its very presence spreads a deadly taint that turns the land black and corrupts all living things. It is evil.

That's how they should all look. I hope Bioware tweaks them all to look more like this.

Google images. And while it's a better look for the Hurlocks, it's not a perfect one.

As a base design, that looks pretty decent. I just don't like the bone-white skin - it should be darker and more mangled looking, like the Hurlock Alphas. The teeth could definitely do with some sharpening, as well.

Yea as a basic starting point I would've said "Alright, that's not what I'd think a Hurlock should look like completely but at least it's not some chalk white clownspawn that moves like an idiotic monkey"

Sharp teeth are a must for the Hurlocks, considering Shadow of Light Dragon said above that they were described to have that in one of the books.

The noise that they made in DA2 was to much similar with the goblins in Lord of the rings and was not scary at all. In origin The noice that the hurlocks was much darker and robust even when they taunted, charged and died.

The corruption of them in origin was much more scary considering that their flesh looks like been rotten away and they have pointed teeth but they also looked much bigger in origins to.

When DA3 comes out i hope that they will change the darkspawn back but i also hope that in DA3 we will be seeing new kinds of darkspawn from that have corrupted new species, for example we might see a corrupted qunari darkspawn,

1) I think the grunts were the same.

2) I don't want a revert entirely. I just really want them to take some or all of my suggestions up above and implement it, because that seems to be better for the Darkspawn.

3.) Qunari broodmothers (actually Kossith broodmothers, as Qunari means people of the Qun) make Ogres. A corrupted person is a Ghoul, not a Darkspawn.

Speaking of which, I wonder if Bioware has a new design for Broodmothers. I'd hope they don't botch the design for those if they do, as I already found them quite grotesque in the original.

I too hope they don't change the broodmothers. Granted we mostly saw Dwarven ones and only one Human one.

I would like to see the broodmothers look almost entirely the same except for the face. Faces should be different looking. One Dwarven broodmother's face should be different from another's.

I don't think that all the blame has to fall on the new darkspawn models. I think that the new graphic engine and the new palette with all its sparkling colours does its part too in making the monsters look less wicked and frightening.

I think that all us would like to see a Skyrim-like graphic engine in DA3, let's see what the developers will be able to do.

But, as I always say: gameplay first, then content and eventually graphics!

Hair, the taint, whatever those dark, thin strands at the top of its skull are... You don't even see them in-game. So I really don't understand where this complaint/suggestion for improvement is coming from. Image IPB
