Just wanted to give some potentially-helping information concerning sudden in-game freezes (I.E game freezing, AND computer becomes completely unresponsive as well, Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't do anything, Alt+Tab does nothing, I really mean complete screen + system freeze). I was afflicted by that problem but I realized after trying a couple of things that basically what caused the issue (at least for me) was that the highest in-game settings are simply unstable as of now (perhaps with patch 1.03 it will be fixed), especially when combined with some GPU drivers settings.
So, to "make sure" that I could play it for more than just ten minutes until the next game/system freeze would occur I did the following, and it worked for me (I can now play non-stop without any problems for hours)...
From DA2's Configuration Utility (don't forget to save the settings when you exit the utility):
1) Set the Graphics Detail to "Medium".
2) The Anti-Aliasing can be used, I left it at "8x".
3) The High Resolution Textures option can be used, mine is "Enabled".
4) Set the Renderer option to "DirectX 9".
Then, launch the game itself, and make sure that the following in-game Video options are grayed out:
º Anisotropic filtering
º Screen space ambient occlusion
º Diffusion depth of field
º High-quality blur
NOTE: The High-resolution Texture option can be checked (since it was Enabled from the utility, if of course you do want to use the High-Res pack, that's up to you, it's a stable pack and it won't cause problems on its own). From that point just don't touch anything else in the Video options, let everything be as is, just make sure that the options shown above are grayed out.
Then, leave the game, and access your NVIDIA's Control Panel (right-click your Desktop and select "NVIDIA Control Panel", then set the following settings, under the "Manage 3D Settings" options:
º Ambient Occlusion - Off
º Anisotropic filtering - Application-controlled
º Anti-aliasing - Gamma correction - Off
º Anti-aliasing - Mode - Application-controlled
º Anti-aliasing - Setting - Application-controlled (should be grayed out)
º Anti-aliasing - Transparency - Off
º CUDA - GPUs - All
º Maximum pre-rendered frames - 3
º Threaded optimization - Auto
The above are the default NVIDIA options, the rest of the unmentioned options can be set as you please, they don't have to be the default ones, but specifically the options shown above should be set as indicated from my own testing. All of this is to ensure that the settings from the DA2 Utility + In-Game Video Options + NVIDIA CP Settings trio work in "unison" for maximum game stability and avoid graphics drivers-related freezes. Until the next patch comes and fixes GPU drivers-related problems and potentially other game-specific issues then I strongly recommend that any NVIDIA users who are experiencing the freezing (or perhaps crashing) problems do apply those specific settings. As I mentioned it fixed all the freezing issues I was experiencing.
For AMD/ATi users I simply suggest to apply the DA2 Utility + In-Game Video Options, it may still help.
NOTE: Another issue that seems to be fixed by doing all of this (or at least part of it, I think that one is just related to the Renderer option chosen and doesn't have anything to do with the GPU drivers settings) is the Gamma-related problem that some people including myself are experiencing (or were, in my case, since it's fixed mow).
It seems that people reported that the Gamma option in the In-Game Video options does not stick after applying it (I.E it does apply for the time of your game-play session, but if you leave the game and launch it again later then the Gamma option resets and you have to set it again). I believe that the issue is just related to the Renderer option used although I'm not 100% certain about it, I do know however that by combining all the settings I am suggesting here that it gets fixed.
Finally, as a side note, obviously those settings won't grant your eyes with high quality graphics, but in my opinion it still is sufficient and if you do enjoy the game like I do then you won't really mind that much about it. I always favor stability over graphics quality especially when it comes to fixing issues that allows me (and others) to actually play the game rather than stubbonrly trying to run everything at maximum settings when obviously it cannot be done unless you want to deal with unstability due to yet-to-be fixed issues.
Hope it helps, enjoy!
