After I got my ranger cabin I was told there were some humans destroying the forest so I investigated. After confronting the humans I was told he's looking for a deposit of Mithril and was given the first piece of an old note. In the quest description it talks about the old dungeon. But, Iv'e searched the old dungeon twice and can't find how to move this quest forward. Any help is appreciated

If you are talking about lord tembelton, the mithral necklace isn't in the dungeon, it is somewhere near the bottom right hand side of the map. Hold down the tab key and you should see one of the rocks light up; the necklace's in there.

Thank you very much! The quest description pointed to the old dungeon so I was looking in the wrong place. I got the note and medalion from the cache in the SW portion of the map (just east of Lord Tembelton) and returned it to him which caused him to leave my forest.

Spoiler; Giving alcohol & swords to kids would be very bad.

My R/C found the stash before running into Tomblethen's party. So I got the dialogue option for returning it without having been given part of a map first. I did found part of a map though in inside the dungeon, before I became Ranger-protector of the area. Should I reload to act in a different order, recieve the quest before finding the stash and get two pieces of that map? Will I need both map pieces in the future?
(please only answer my question without spoiling me with what those map pieces will be for, this is my first runthrough in BG2 as a ranger).

You won't need that map ever again. If the reward's right, there will be no later penalty for bypassing part of the quest.
Edit: I'm not actually back yet. I'm just taking a short vacation from the lands of offline.
