Garrus, being a turian, was able to take hits that would've killed Zaeed, because he's got an exoskeleton.
Nice post but my inner lore**** wanted this to be clear, turians don't literally have an "exoskeleton". Their plates don't offer any kind of protection except against radiation, and they are sensitive to pressure. If I remember correctly, the codex compares them to human nails. Furthermore, there are many real life instances of people surviving gun shots to the head. It's not common, but it happens a lot more often than people think. On the other hand, you don't even need to be hit directly by a rocket to be blown up by it...
Still, Garrus's outter hide is tougher than human flesh. Hell, even Grunt, a Krogan probably four times Garrus's strenghth admitted that Turians require a lot of work to kill. I believe he used the phrase "work the blade" for Turian dissection, while describing humans as "soft".
But that's not really the point. Garrus, being the God-Tier bad ass that he is, survived and was on the verge of recovering from a gunship shooting him with a mini gun! Even Shepard would've died from that. This is because Turians have tougher skin than the other races. Fingernails are tough, and several inches of pure fingernail-like material making up the surface layer of a organic life form would be like the trunk of an oak at the very least.
(part of this may also be because Garrus was wearing armor that dwarfed anything Shepard or Zaeed wore, but we know that the bullets still penetrated the suit, because Garrus was bleeding.)
Now tell me honestly, if you had a hide that was at least as sturdy as a few inches of an oak tree, and a thick suit of armor that could probably take several hits before being pierced, wouldn't you rather risk taking a small missile to the chest knowing that there's a possibility that you might survive, rather than having someone hold you down and shoot you with even the smallest hand gun in the most valuable part of your anatomy?
