Agreed. We should have been able to access all their inventories at the Hawke Estate. We were able to do all their runes there, so made no sense we couldn't do inventory as well. And levelups if we wanted.

Signed.  This would be a logical thing.

^This.  I'm on board, too. Posted Image

Some simplifications just make sense, this is one of the them.   Either the Optimize Equipment suggestion, or a way to be able to see on mouse-over ( or something ) easily the comparison to our current stats would also be a good one, OP.

As for the character creation happening after you already got used to the character. I agree that may have been an area that could have been done differently, or approached in such a way we don't see their face.  It was an interesting idea, but it did make it slightly awkward.   Maybe it is better to state that it could have been done more comfortably.

The same goes for shopping. In DA:O the player's inventory and shop's inventory both had a simple dropdown list where you were able to select a companion to compare selected gear with. Of course that was "simplified". Why can't they just improve things instead of dumbing down every feature in the game?

I would like something similar to the therapy session in New Vegas, or the GOAT test from Fallout 3. I personally think the SPECIAL system is the best one for CC. Why didn't BioWare do something similar to that in DA2? I would've preferred it to just Hawke killing Darkspawn, and THEN getting to the CC screen. Just my personal opinion, of course.

I would like a system in which the game asks you if you were a new player unfamiliar with RPGs or the series. In that case it invokes a number of in-game messages to explain the background or game mechanics more thoroughly. That way character creation could be at the start of the game. The way it is implemented now is annoying for people like me who are already familiar with the game.

This friend of mine is pretty much a non-gamer. She's not new to game controllers, but she doesn't own any piece of gamer-ready equipment. But she has been known to dabble in games on occasion (obviously one of those who need just the right game to shove them into gamerhood =)), and she took up my offer to help her play DA2 with a smile, curious to find out what it is about these BioWare games that make them so magical to me.

Here's one game that your friend would really LOVE:

Welcome to our new project!

THE BARD: Saviors of Queens

This game is an ultimate answer towards all the players that always wanted easy, short and fun adventure. There's no violence, no complex storyline and definitely no morality. It's a really short game (no more than 2 hours of gameplay with autoplay feature on the easiest difficulty setting) that will not burden you with anything gameplay-related.

Let desire, wine and music guide you!

Please scroll down to find out more about our brand new title - check out the official Announcement Trailer and the latest exclusive Developer's Diary. In case you would like to pre-order THE BARD: Saviors of Queens, we will do all our best to help you.

Differ from each other? Simply in terms of story, one's you taking an exam. The other one is you in the doctor's office, getting examined.

The SPECIAL system is where you put in stats. Any build works, instead of just having a "right build". And the questions themselves determine what perks(skills)you character gets(for example, a weapon specialist, silver-tounge, eplosives expert, expert mechanic etc, etc.). You can even manually change your perks, if you don't like them. I think it's a much better system than "killing enemies for 10 minutes, then getting to the stats".

Basically the G.O.A.T. was an in game aptitude test your character took while in school in Fallout. It was completely done in game. You sat at your desk, answered really silly questions on the test, and then turned it into the teacher to determine what your character's career would be. The career listed was entirely for laughs (I often got 'Marriage Councellor') but secretly it determined which skills your character would enjoy focusing on.

It was a great approach to character generation, and at the very end of the intro you could choose to ignore all the results and build your character in a more 'traditional' sheet based method if you wanted.

Yes. I think such a system is better too. It worked well in that game.

Mr. Epler, think you might consider this kind of system for your future games? *stares wide-eyed*

Isn't it the same system as used since Morrowind?

Thanks Ali, Jack - both :)

I like the sounds of that, have played things that did it similarly, but had not played those specific games to know.

I *do* like the idea though. A nice, easy way to ease people into the stats as they ease into the environment of the game. Works for me.

And for those who think attending school in RPGs is boring, I should point out I got into a fist fight with a gang of bullies to defend a girl's honor right before the exam.

Of course the better part was seeing the leader of that gang getting placed into the career of 'Hairdresser' following the test.

Well really FNV, ME2 and DA2 have all hit on the same "answer" per se to the RPG and that is having the game "start" before you get slapped with "creating a character" like you did in older games.

Jagged Alliance 2 also did something similar with the psyche profile to build your solider. It is a really non-threatening way to get a non-RPG'er into the game without having them have to try and figure out the arcana of the game rules/engine. I think it works better w/o the class builds that Bioware loves so much. SPECIAL remains the best CRPG engine going.

Where DA2 does help itself is in terms of making it clear (on the screen) what increasing a attribute does. DAO was maddeningly obscure on that point. Also, the maker's sigh gives you a "oops I didn't build it right" button so you aren't limited to your learning mistakes (this was great in DAA). Since most folks really only play a game once the noiton that they should learn for next time doesn't work.

*wonders why on earth anyone would be stupid enough to get someone who is not a gamer to play a game...and then ask them for their opinion?*

Bit like asking someone who cannot drive for their opinion of the latest BMW.....

*shakes his head and leaves*

Someone stole his BMW and they didn't write a way for him to determine an upgrade or equip another model from his Base.  Awwwww :(

(just keeping it relevant while caring :P

So I gather from your post that you emerged from the womb holding one of these, then?

On the contrary, it seems he missed it.

The OP didn't solicit the non-gamer on their opinion beyond how the game played from the perspective of a non-gamer, something only a non-gamer is qualified to answer.  Therefore, such an opinion on just that subject is precisely the opposite of valueless.

The implication is that Autolycus doesn't care about non- or potentially new-gamers, hence my question above.
