I realized
something odd the other day. when I play an RPG with a silent main character i
can play any character, (male/female, evil/good) without any difficulty,
however when an RPG main character has a voice i invariably find myself playing
a female character who is as nice as possible to almost everyone
(paragon/diplomatic style).
Why is this i wonder is it just because i can't stand the idea of being mean to
these people if i have to listen to my character being mean to them, but don't
mind if i just have to hear their reactions.
This is true for both the Mass Effect series and Dragon Age II. The number of
times i have played both beggars belief and yet i find myself creating the same
hero every time.
Is there something wrong with me or do other people do this as well?

Nothing's wrong with you. I don't exactly view it the same way you do, but I feel it's different to be mean to developed characters your protagonist deals with as an "evil" character than it is for characters who aren't fleshed out and don't feel like actual people.

I like playing evil characters, but sometimes I really don't like being an ****. Such as when I have a choice of giving me to orphans, or returning it to Athenril.

The spoken word is a very powerful influence on us. The development
of language was a critical development on the path to being human. And
language is first and foremost, spoken. Darth Vader would not be as
menacing if he was voiced by Pee Wee Herman instead of James Earl Jones.
So actually hearing your character speaking the evil dialogs makes a
huge difference . It is much harder to pretend that it is all just role
playing. It is why I prefer a voiced character. And you are a normal
human being for feeling this way.
What makes DA2 work is the voice actors are very good for both male and female "good" characters. I suspect that if Bioware had a different voice actor for an "evil" character who was like Irenicus from Baldur's Gate, you might find playing an "evil" character more fun. That is why I would like some choice in the voice for DA3.

What? Are you serious? I have never managed to play an entire ME2 game as paragon, to dull. And I only played ME as Paragon once.
As for DA2, I've never played as a diplomatic/helpfull character but I have played as aggresive/ruthless character twice. Much more fun imo. Always play evil character in Fable-series as well.
I do think however that it is much more fun to be a sarcastic character when the character has a voice, so that is good.
