If Runes of Valiance increase attributes by 4, that would be like increasing your level by 8 (attribute-wise)

No, it isn’t! If I roll a mage and level up 8 levels, I’m not spreading those points evenly over useless attributes like strength; in fact I may pump them all into one or two attributes. Equivalent of two levels, more like it.

Every attribute is useful to all classes, except Strength to a Force Mage.

so

just dl'ed the patch and spent like half an hour setting up my tactics

walk into invisible sister's base

firestorm dropped on head

died

i thought you couldn't suffer over 75% from a FF attack any more?

They also said that the last patch "fixed" Who Needs Rescuing Quest but it actually broke it entirely for some folks (myself included as now you cant even start it.).   We see how that worked out lol

Not for practical purposes. If I roll a mage and level up 8 levels, I’m not spreading those points evenly over useless attributes like STR; in fact I may pump them all into one or two attributes. Equivalent of two levels, more like it.

Yes, they're not exactly the same, but a RoV that adds +7 to all attributes gives you a ridiculous amount of fortitude, critical chance, mana/stamina, defense, critical hit damage, and health/health regeneration, all for a single rune (and that's not including the direct damage increases for each class).  With the exception of Force Magi, nearly every class/build benefits from each attribute.

The first time I played the game and saw that RoV were giving me +7, I thought that was insane, and couldn't believe that was intended (which in Luke's post on the previous page confirms).

The changes restore BM to its original function as a secondary casting source rather than a cheap "oh hai letz stakkkk buffz" enabler.

Actually you can stack all the buffs doing the old 'jump from 90% to 110% or more and then add the rest' trick. EXCEPT SH.

Specifically speaking about Rune of Valiance, it was never supposed to be that high in the first place - originally the stats worked differently, on a much higher scale. Eventually it was decided that the cap should be +2 to all attributes on any item and the rune just slipped through that - we were aware that it was like that since launch but we had a plan to do all of the balance changes (and the testing that went along with it) at the same time so it got delayed.

Simply put, it was a ridiculous amount of stats relative to any other thing in the game.

Are you gonna nerf Malcolm's Honor?

Presumably that's a 75% restriction on a single hit.  That would protect against the likes of walking bomb and blood splatter, but not firestorm, which does a series of hits.

I have to say I'm surprised you are buffing Firestorm. Yeah, Fireball is weaksauce, but Firestorm is rather effective.

Yeah Firestorm is really quite effective pre-patching so I was a bit shocked to see them making that tougher. fireball OTOH is well neigh useless so maybe this will help it.

Supplier achievement is still broken, loaded save right before collecting the last few resources and nothing popped.

Except you can't stack nearly as many buffs when BM occupies a whopping 70% of your mana, which was kinda the point I was getting at.

Actually you can as long as you never hit the magic 100%.

(the % of people that start the game on Nightmare, let alone play the whole thing is less than 2.5)

That's a really cool stat. Any chance you could say how many finish on NM? Do you even have that stat available?

I'm very slowly making my way through on NM, as a 2nd playthrough, and enjoying learning from this forum again. (Which I first discovered when I wanted tips to beat Firkraag, back in the day.)

Is the combat more fun now? Or no?

Not sure about the second bit.

I haven't even been able to bring myself to play the game, and I downloaded the patch at like 10am yesterday.

I have to work at updating my guides to have better synergy with the patch changes, and I am REALLY not looking forward to tearing my hair out trying to update 3 guides at once.

this patch can burn in hell, even if it is good, because it's making me do work, and i don't wanna do work

they should've just called it the 'f**k arelex and everything he stands for' update, that would be more accurate

I could tell you how many people have nightmare on when they finish the game (<1%) but not how many actually stuck it on Nightmare through the whole thing without changing it. We should have had that achievement like ME2 does^_^

Hope you feel better about the game later.

Arelex, you should keep the previous versions intact and release edited versions for the new patch. Maybe provide a link at the top of the old ones redirecting to the new versions. Many people have said they are not going to update for some time.

If you don't wanna update, noone's forcing you. You'll just have to find new bulds and write the guides from scratch.

(About entropic cloud I can tell you when EA moves its posterior and certifies this sh** already >_<)

At first glance, on Nightmare, almost definitely not.  Maybe by Merrill, and only situationally - no one will be racing down the tree to get it.  Maybe at level 24+.  I doubt you'd want to go all the way down that tree with Hawke. The damage is still negligible (less than 1/3 of tempest).  It mostly depends how long the debuffs last on NM now. The chance for status ailments against enemies that matter is still too low. Hopefully the long cast animation has been reduced.

Would have to be tested to make any concrete assessment.
