I'm sure you guys must see a lot of crashes on here, and I know they are very specific to the machine you're running on.  But I just wanted to see if anyone had any brilliant ideas.

Problem:  Game crashes at exact same spot every time.  Launcher works fine.  After hitting play, I see a scene with a red Bioware logo, then a scene with some spaceship looking thing followed by an EA logo.  At this point, the game always goes to a black screen and Windows says it has stopped working.  Occasionally, I get an error saying something along the lines of "Microsoft Visual C++...runtime error."  I reinstalled the microsoft visual c++ redistributable and nothing changed

Game:  EA download, version 1.02

System:  Windows 7, i5, 6970 graphics card, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 11

I think the problem is DirectX 11. It's not backwards compatible with DX9, which is the one required by ME2. You have to download DX9 from Microsoft's site (sorry, I don't remember the link) and install it. DX9 and DX11 can coexist under Win 7.

It's on the ME-2 disk, and the game tries to install it as part of its normal install procedure. Meanwhile, there's simply way too little material to work with, other than just WAGs.

Read and follow Pacifien's guide to problem reporting, please.

Oh. Well I think I installed that too. That was one of the first things I tried. DxDiag only showed 11 though, so that was what I included in my summary. In case I screwed it up, how do I install both of them? When I try to install DX9, it says that a "newer or equivalent version" is already installed, so I can't tell if it is referring to 9 or 11.

Read and follow Pacifien's guide to problem reporting, please.

I thought I got the gist of everything.  I'll try to be more thorough this time.

1. What version of the game are you playing: physical disc or digital download (along with which vendor)?
      digital download, EADM, version 1.02
2. System Details
           *Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.3GHz
           *Memory: 8192MB RAM
*Chip type: ATI display adapter (0x6718)
           *VRAM: 2 GB
           *Driver Version: 8.850.0.0
*Sound Adapter: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
           *Driver Version: 6.00.0001.6235
           *Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110408-1631)
*DirectX Version: DirectX 11 (possibly 9; still trying to figure out if I have both installed properly)
1. What is the nature of the problem you are seeing?
Game crashes after EA logo on load.  It just goes to a black screenn.  Displays Microsoft Visual C++ runtime error.
2. When did the problem start occurring?
As soon as I tried to run the game for the first time.  It has never worked.
3. Where does your problem occur?
After selecting "Play" from the launcher, before reaching the main menu.
4. What are the steps in replicating the problem?
Start launcher, click play.  Screen turns black.  Minimize the game.  "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working."
5. Have you modified your game in any way?
No.  I considered changing graphics options, but this doesn't appear to be a graphics problem.

1) Have you updated the realtek driver from their website, the Win7 OE one stinks by all reports.
2) Which Catalyst driver are you running for your vid card?

I just tried updating them again earlier. Just a disclaimer, I'm terrible at identifying the correct driver information.

Realtek driver is version 6.00.0001.6363.

Video card:
Driver File Version: 8.17.0010.1077
Driver Version: 8.850.0.0

Solved! I can't tell you what was wrong or what fixed it, because I tried a bunch of things. But reinstalling, redownloading DX9, and updating video and sound drivers did it. Thanks all.
