I don't  really have a sound card I guess, its part of my mother board, its a realtek, I don't know alot about all this, but sometime ago I read a post about realtek causing problems with da:o.  I just basically want to know if realtek  causes problems and   I do know enough to install a sound card if I get one, but wich one?  I don't want anything fancy, as money is an issue, any ideas?

-thanks in advance for any help

If my sound card was the problem, and I went to my device manager and disabled the device would that have the same effect as installing a new soundcard would have as far as shutting down the old one goes? If that makes any sense to anyone except me...:)

AFAIK, it is as much the generic Realtek DRIVER as anything that is a large part of the problem; however, if you disable it in the windows device manager, the game just may refuse to start. There is an option in the game's configuration to shut down sound, though.

I played this game on Realtek HD Audio. No problems whatsoever.

I went to the device manager and disabled the item that said realtek hd, although there were a lot of other items under that sound device, sound card heading so I'm not sure if I picked the right one or the only one, but the game started and ran fine for about 30 mins or so then just locked up. Might I add that playing this game without sound is horrible :) I did go to Best Buy and grabbed a sound card off the shelf for $45.00, the only thing I use my computer is playing games, aside from some office projects. So I saw no need to spend more money. I will try that today and see what happens.

First off... I have to say it's a little annoying that you've seemed to spread this issue out between three different posts. I had to dig to find your hardware specs.

Second... I doubt the audio card is the issue. Looking back over the history of your posts, you mentioned that you "ruined one hard drive" over DAO... which frankly find hard to believe.

I suspect the proper solution to your problem is what I call the "nuclear option"-- a complete re-installation of Windows XP SP3. If you want to add a new audio card, lovely, it can't hurt... at the same time you have the case open, I'd suggest giving your PC's innards a good dusting, and make sure all cards/memory modules are seated properly.

But I think a lot of what you're dealing with is a stale installation of Windows.

EDIT:  I don't suggest this lightly, however.  But suspicious of any system where you've reported (in different posts) video, audio, and performance problems.  Anyway, if you have the discs and take a few days to back up whatever data you need, reinstalling Windows is an invenstment of time, but not much money.

This post was to specifically ask about a sound card and nothing else. I wanted advice on sound cards compatibility, I didn't mean to have two diff posts for the same issue.
The hard drive was ruined because my game keeps freezing up, it doesn't have a rhyme or reason, sometimes its 5 mins, sometimes its an hour, sometimes, 2hours, sometimes 10 mins. But when it does freeze up I have no option but to cold boot the computer. After cold booting the computer hundreds of times the hard drive gave up. I play other games and have no issues at all, the only one that could compare to DAO however would be Fallout3.
I just put a new hard drive in my computer so I have a complete reinstillation of xp sp3 and I have nothing on the drive but DAO, Fallout3, and Office. Besides things that are associate with or necessary for those programs and my video card.
My computer is very clean inside, no hidden dust bunnies anywhere, I checked everything you mentioned when I put the new drive in most recently.
These problems have been driving me crazy. I totally love playing this game but for some reason this game does not love me.
I appreciate your attention to this, I've covered everything in this post, before I even saw that you had posted here.
I also tried playing DAO on the new drive before I reinstalled Fallout3 and that didn't make any difference either. As a matter of fact the only reason I even reinstalled Fallout3 was so I'd have something to play.

All I want is to be able to play this game, who would have thought such a simple request could turn out to be so horribly difficult...
