I can't see this on here, but i assume you all know about it...

A new Neverwinter game for PC.. it was announced quite a few months ago now.

Let's just hope they don't ruin it and it's the same play style as NWN (as in top down), but be warned it is advertised as multiplayer and singleplayer.

The reason i put it up is, I sent it to a couple of guys on the forums here and they hadn't heard of it.

Remember though it's not NWN3.. this is a completely diff. game... with diff. companies involved, although atari is attached too.

Yeah, that's the general conclusion. As you can see, there were quite long and often heated discussions about it. The reason there's not much current discussion is that most of it was exhausted (I think most people agree that while it could be cool, the only link to Neverwinter Nights is the setting, the tenuous D&D link, and the name) and that such discussions often get angry for whatever reason, so people seem to have steered away from it.

Criptic has been sold, so I don't know if that game will ever come out.

Actually with Perfect World in control of Cryptic there's a possibility that they may rethink the project and make it truer to the original titles. Locking horns with WoW has historically proven to be kinda stupid. They may decide that alienating us (the NWN community) is unwise. I have no doubt they will produce an MMO, but they may decide to cater more to Neverwinter's existing fanbase by offering what would essentially be customizable world instances to indivdual users and a DM client of sorts. Technically it's really not that unreasonable, and only a very few users would even want their own worlds.

Or not.

Or they may decide to trash the project altogether.

No matter what happens it's hard to believe Perfect World; an ambitious, hungry young company; will screw the pooch harder than Atari would have.

I'm curious to see how ths plays out.

I don't think it is possible for this NWN MMO to please the NWN1/2 crowd. Not because we are difficult to please but simply because it cannot offer anything comparable to what we have here. It is simply not possible...

The level of customization specifically that we have here cannot be made accessible in a pay to play MMO as the power we have would be abused.

UNLESS you were able to request a locked instance. Your player's characters could be created, live out their lives, and die in a DM/Builder's private instance. Characters could be imported/exported to and from other instaces at the world owners discression, but would never be allowed out into the main world.

Voila. An MMO complete with monthly payments, toolset, and DM client. It wouldn't be as powerful as NWN1-2. Adding custom content could be done in a Sims 2 kind of way, I suppose, but it would require server side work that most MMOs would be reluctant to provide. But technically it's not much of a stretch, and it would be truer to the NWN franchise than the "just another WoW clone with a Champions map editor" that Atari seems to have on the boards.

if I pay a monthly payment don't expect me to do the game for them. Or to pay to access my work....

Truth is I'm inclined to agree with you, Shallina.

There's another upside to Perfect World taking over cryptic. They only have one title out. It's an MMO, and Cryptic makes MMO's. If the Neverwinter project survives it's going to be an MMO... BUT... Perfect World does NOT use a P2P business model. In fact the P2P model is falling out of favor in the MMO business pretty much all around.

Look, I'm not trying to suggest that any of this is going to happen or that even if it does Neverwinter will be a worthy heir to the NWN tradition. Truth is the toolset will almost certainly be way too dumbed down and inflexible for us old-schoolers. I'm just saying this is a glimmer of hope. I'm suggesting that the project will likely be better without Atari in the mix than it could ever be with them. Atari has repeatedly shown that left to their own devices they could screw up a wet dream.

And BTW, a dumbed down toolset could be a good thing. It could serve as a gateway toolset of sorts. A lot of people who were intimidated by the NWN1-2 toolsets, or who have never been exposed to them at all, might just decide after doing some "NWN Lite" that they'd like to give the real thing a shot.

From where I sit the sale of Cryptic is a huge boon to the Neverwinter franchise. They may or may not make it better, but they sure as hell won't make it any worse.

Atari Sold Crytpic?!? I'm completely "shocked" by this turn of events! Once more down the stock reduction and quick selloff of assets road, Atari?

Daggerdale is out, I hear.

Welcome back, DNO, I was growing concerned. Good to have you around again.  There has been an alarming shortage of text walls in your absence.  :)

I heard Daggerdale wasn't so special. Anyone play it?

Yeah. It looks pretty awful. It reminds me of the PS2 version of Baldur's Gate. If you like the idea of a 3D golden axe you might enjoy it, but it's definitely not D&D or an RPG by any stretch of the imagination.

As a point of information, the PS2 games (Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance) were (to be fair) completely different games. They were OK IMO - for PS2 RPG games - but nothing like the Baldur's Gate series. I don't think they were ever really meant to be, though.

Daggerdale looks OK... ish... but anyone would think from watching their trailer that it's the first D&D PC game ever.

I read a review that said the ending of Daggerdale would literally make you laugh out loud. That was almost enough to make me buy it (or at least search for a video of the ending on youtube).

Glad to see the owl back (or his clone:D). It's true that we don't have many walls of text lately.

I don't know about this Daggerdale, I played BG:DA in PS2 years ago. I don't remember a lot but it's a completely different game than the NWN and BG series, just a hack n slash with axes and fireballs.

I'm just gonna say that Cryptic has made more than one relatively sub-par MMO, Champions Online... Star Trek Online...
