I have installed Dragon Age: Orgins but when I click play, it comes up with a message saying:

Failed to detect a supported video card.

All help is appreciated, thank you =]

So, what video card do you have?

If it isn't at least as capable as the "Minimum" identified for the game, the game will not run.

All modern games are packaged with a label on the box describing the minimum hardware that they will run on. It is called "System Requirements", and with the huge growth in popularity for very cheaply made portable PC type devices, it is very, VERY important to read that label, and further, to actually understand what it tells you:

Windows XP Minimum Specifications
OS: Windows XP with SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Single (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.0Ghz or greater
RAM: 1 GB or more
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space
Video: ATI Radeon X850 256MB or greater (this is clearly wrong)
NVIDIA GeForce "6600 GT" 128MB or greater (and this one is more wrong)

(Note: IMO, the practical choices for the two video cards above should be the Radeon X800 Pro, and the Geforce 6800 GS, at least, for small textures - it will take a Radeon X1650 XT (or X1800 GTO, same thing, almost) for medium or better textures)

INTEL'S GARBAGE (Graphics Chip) IS NOT SUPPORTED, and there is an interesting possibility that male party characters are easier to choose than female when using substandard video solutions, such as Intel's.

More likely than not, your machine will never run the game, but here are some things you could have done before writing your message:

Finally, you really need to REGISTER the game in your profile.

@BlueSword; Don't feel bad. Your rig may be perfectly capable of playing the game (we can't tell without knowing what card you have.) BUt there's a known problem if you've set the resolution to soemthing higher that the game can handle. (Gorath Alpha knows that too. Not sure why didn't mention the possiblity in the response...)

Anyway, if that's what's happening for you, changing your screen resolution to something more "standard" and setting the game to play in "Windowed" mode initially may get you started. You can then adjust things upward until you find the limit.

Good Luck!

You're quite welcome.  The particular Intel chip you mentioned earlier, before editing that off, was among those that can't (at least, TTBOMK) meet the pixel shader requirement for Dx9, so it can't be used, but without knowing what kind of PC it's in, we can't even help you go shopping for an upgrade if your PC has that option available (and laptops actually do not).

Regarding the thirty-plus message threads about that particular error message, when the DA2 Demo was brand new, and many people were getting the error from choosing bad screen settings, it seems that I called up almost all of those threads and edited my answers, if I had made one, to include that possibility, or added a brand new comment about the situation.

How do you get the game to play in a windowed mode?

Just untick the box that says "play in full screen mode" in the video configuration menu.

I don't remember which one, but Blue here already answered that the video was an Intel something fairly elderly, and then edited that off again. She had answered Thandal's question, and my longer comments overlapped timewise, so her answer was already mentioned (as I had suspected her PC to be an inexpensive something with just Intel onboard) when I included the list of minimum requirements.

It's been half of a day since you opened your original post here.  We are going to have to guess that you were asking about some sort of a portable computing device, not a desktop PC, and dropped the subject without having said that you were giving up.  It is regrettable that so few people understand the mistake that so many millions of them are making, getting rid of good, useful desktops for the popular cachet of owning a mobile system that is slower, weaker, and shorter-lived, by far, than the bigger system they have turned their collective backs upon.

P. S.  In case this thread comes up in a search sweep and doesn't have it mentioned yet, let's be sure everyone knows that attempting to use the wrong screen resolution will trigger this error in DA2 and the DA2 Demo.  You must choose screen resolutions that are normal to your display, not a 4:3 on a wide screen, nor vice versa.
