I don't know if there's already a thread discussing this issue.
We already know that there are some time jumps during the course of the story, a wrong decision in my humble opinion. A "decade in name only", so to speak, as we only get to play...how many? Three years? Something like that.
But what I truly want to know is...what happened during the time jumps? Did Hawke go on vacation? As nothing really changes and everything remains mostly the same, I don't get the point of making time jumps, was there a good reason apart from giving a false illusion of time? I don't know but I really doubt it.

Some people jokingly say Hawke went into a coma because it seems like he doesn't do anything, which is an issue for those of us who feel that Hawke acts too reactive during the actual storyline. Apparently, he used his wealth to purchase his family home and nothing else after Act I. After Act II is over, he doesn't seem to have sided with or against Meredith for three years. Why? I don't see the point in making Hawke so reactive.

I'm such a DA2 cynic. Only thing I got is, they made time jumps to provide space for DLCs to occur.

I think that I'll stick with the "coma" theory.

I would imagine that between Act 2 and Act 3, Hawke was trying to put the shattered pieces of his/her family back together (estate issues after Leandra's death, dealing with Gamlen, etc), as well as just immersing his/herself in life with a love interest (depending on how you played the game). I think that Hawke spent that particular span of time going a bit insular, and thus not getting involved with Meredith's rise to power.

Perhaps the time jumps are meant to avoid some potentially angsty or mundane bits of Hawke's story. A lot of people have cited that they would have liked to have had some extra scenes post-All that Remains, but it's possible that we skipped past that, and a couple of years here and there, to maintain some narrative flow. Just some careful edits to keep the game within a specific time frame, for good or for bad.

What happened during all those area transitions? Did the party just march in awkward silence? That's out of character if you ask me. Or what ever happened between day/night transitions? I didn't see any evidence that anybody slept in either game, if not just camping the edge of the map then standing around idle in camp. Again; out of character.

Yet another 'issue' that's completely beyond me.. Like Wulfram said: Use your imagination.

I did wonder why my character showed no sign of age over the ten years but maybe she/he has a good skincare regime. But if you look at the journals you will see that Avelyne got married etc, Isabella did things too and so obviously all the characters lived their lives during the 10 years of the story. We are just coming in at key periods in their lives which is just like what happens in novels. We should be glad that we don't have to wait for a couple of years before the next book comes out! We do not have to suffer the everyday matters but just enjoy the highspots!

It's like summer vacation in school.

Some kids did really fun things - Aveline went and got married.

Some kids went to camp.

Some kids stayed home and did nothing.

That last kid? That's Hawke.

Some unused dialogue someone found in the game's files.

Cassandra: I met gaps in time. What did the Champion do all those years after the Deep Roads, for instance? Take up knitting?
Varric: Well that, my dear seeker, is a different story completely!

Here's some other choice bits:

Cassandra: Why do you pause everytime your story takes us through a door?
Varric: Well I have to think! I can't remember everything at the drop of a hat you know.

(If anyone doesn't get the joke, it's about the game having to load new zone data when you go through doors. Also, IMO it indicates that this dialogue isn't so much cut as it is an easter egg never intended to be used, for laughs of anyone going through the audio files manually.)

Varric: You know, now that I think about it... we really killed a lot of people.

Cassandra: Varric. You make it sound like blood mages danced the remigold through Lowtown on a nightly basis.
Varric: Oh, I already told you about that did I?

They had crazy awesome dance parties, everyone (except Fenris) was invited because Fenris is a goth.

Oh please. Fenris loves to dance. He does choreography: running from room to room in his house. To not invite him would be a waste of a perfectly good elf.

My Hawke sat on her bum all day in the middle of every time-skip. True story.

I hope DLCs explain the time jump if not you will see more hate from fans.

But those DLCs will just be filler, they can't alter the main story. Maybe we'll at least get some different scenery.

Not because he hates to dance, but Anders and Merril are my bros, and Bethany is my sister so his mage hating angst can suck it.
