Well I finally started my mage playthrough trying out hard difficulty for the first time.  Couldn't beat the Ogre or the first mercenary quest.  Ha, Ha.

I tried starting out with 2  constitution and 1 Magic but  needed more willpower for armor requirments so I'm going 1,1,1.  Decided to get Force Mage for Unshakeable and then get Spirit Healer instead of Blood mage because that's what I want for the Character.

Since getting the stuff in your chest things seem to be easier so it's going alright so far.

The trick to beating that encounter, or any encounter in the game where the enemy uses just brute attacks, not magic, not backstabs...is to dodge thier slow or sometimes fast melee attacks, with the ogre its easy,

- control all your characters at once (ctrl A) for pc.
- watch for his "i'm about to attack movements" chest pound for the ground slam for example
- move your party a few feet away in the nearest direction away that you can.
- watch for his charge and throw and move your party out of the way
- he will swing and miss, then immediately target and attack him again.
- rinse and repeat
- btw its easier to kill all the adds (especially bolters) first and just use the above strategy to avoid him till last

This tactic works for the surprisingly force heavy stabby in the red iron quest when you first reach kirkwell, I don't know how he's generating more force than his cronies using huge mallets but whatever. His "tell" is a reach back to stab. I assume you know that some creatures attack motion is faster and you can just get your timing right.

hmm hope my rambling made sense

After Patch 1.03 Is it a good idea to get Unshakable? I already have it on this character but I was wondering. I still think it's a good investment for mages, no?

Do you need to kill Lieutenants first because of their healing? The reason I asked was because I fought a desire demon and it was healing so fast that I had to send Carver over and whack on her.

Blood Magic is as close to an "I win" button as you're going to get in this game. I especially like upgraded grave robber.

The ancient Rock Wraith wiped me out on Hard but I got him on normal. It was Epic, ha,ha.

I may have to turn it down to Normal but I want to try out hard. Oh well.

One thing that has stood out to me as exremely important on Nightmare, and hard to some extend, is positioning to assist with agro. Very important on a lot of fights. I'm trying a Elemental/FM/BM. High risk , High reward is the hope. We'll see.

From a combat standpoint, playing as a Force mage is fun, even with the patch, although I have yet to beat it on Nightmare post-patch. However, prepare to suspend disbelief A LOT from a story standpoint, lest ye face-palm yourself to death.

It really depends on how you want to play your mage. If your going spirit healer, you'll have a pretty easy time. I'd reccomend getting some of the end school passives like Galvanism or Elemental Mastery, if you don't go Blood Mage; you'll need the mana regen. Also, if you looking for dealing damage, you'll want to read in to CCC's.

I did a non-Blood Mage run through Nightmare (Maxed out Elemental Tree, Maxed out Primal Tree, Force, Spirit and just the Specialization Point in Spirit Healer for +25 mana). The early game was pretty difficulty; Act 1 especially. But once I got midway through Act 2, the sheer power of that build started to show. Force Mage amplifies the elemental force for all elemental attacks, so basically, your either knocking down, freezing, stunning or burning your enemies to death.

Spirit Healer + Blood Mage makes your Hawke a better Healbot than Anders. Blood + Force makes you a pretty good damage dealer. Force + Spirit Healer makes you like a Jedi almost, if you can picture that.

Elemental and Primal are your damage dealing Schools, Spirit is DoT school, but only undead and demons are resistant to spirit. Arcane is nice for support along with Crushing Prison. Creation is obvious.

Also, carry a couple of different staves around. On Nightmare, creatures are immune to specific damage types, so you need to switch staves to compensate for that. On lower difficulties, I'm sure its more of a damage resistance than immunity.

Most undead including revenants are weak to spirit.  Demons are immune to spirit. Rage demons however take normal damage.

Ya, you are correct. Undead are immune to Nature. Arcane Horrors, are immune to Spirit. Rage Demons are immune to Fire, but get destroyed by Cold.

Don't use spirit as a main damage tree. I tried that with my first character to be "different" and it did not work at all.

Don't try to get every upgrade for every spell you have

That depends on what your trying to do; Death Siphon is a great way to get mana (and health) when upgraded if you choose not to go Blood Mage. Spirit also has good CCC's against Disorient with Virulient Walking Bomb and Upgraded Spirit bolt (Spirit bolt is one of the fastest firing spells, so if you have Varric with upgraded pinning shot, you basically can pop foes on a pretty quick basis). Dispel works wonders! And the Spirit +10% mana regen is more easily attainable than either Primal or Elemental's passive bonus. Spirit is a pretty good tree all in all.

Also, upgrading spells depends on how you want to play your mage. For instance, If you get the Force Mage's passive that gives +100% Force, you upgrading spells with Elemental force become extremely potent. For instance, the Elemental tree causes basically all enemies, other than bosses and some elites, to burn or freeze. The same can be said about the Primal tree, as enemies are stun while being shocked, or knocked down from Stonefist.

It's all up to play style, but capping out at level 27 allows you to fully upgrade about 3 full trees worth of spells.

Oh I love my Spirit Staves. Hopefully that immunity stuff is just for Nightmare and I don't have to change my staff. I'd probably change to an electric staff but then I couldn't fight the Qunari.

It most likely is for Nightmare and Hard. But, what I would reccommend is going in to options and display floating combat text. It will help a lot. Damage shows up in different colors so you can see what colors are doing the most damage and in future battles, exploit your knowledge. Also, "Immune" pops up if an enemy has an elemental immunity. So, if you see green damage numbers and immune, for instance, and you have two mages in your party, then you know that you mage with a nature damage staff is doing damage, while your other mage's staff is ineffective against a certain enemy type. During my mage playthrough, I had a staff for each element, so when I found that an enemy had an immunity, I would just swap a staff. It's kinda cool when you realize what is immune to what, and when you see it in a battle, you know, "Hey, I'm fighting these, time to whip out my super-effective staff!".

I suprised myself and beat the High dragon on Hard. I had two spirit healers Me and Anders plus Fenris and Aveline. I took control of Aveline and moved to the side of the dragon like on a recent video that was a help, but Fenris keep dying so I had to bring him back. I guess that's revive him that is. I did have one cold staff that was a great help. It did 112 damage. I seem to remember it doing that much damage, and I was also very lucky.

Advice for a bad player? Get the heal spell early on and play on casual. Tis what I do, and I'm about as bad as they come when it comes to RPG's. :P

Primal tree owns. Make sure your party's Tactics are programmed properly, in fact, program them yourself. Make sure they're programmed to take potions pretty liberally, the game will replenish them as treasure. Always have an additional mage with you, preferably Anders for his healing ability. Use Isabela as your Rogue, since she gets in close and dusts up with people, thereby distracting more people away from you and the other mage. Use Aveline as your tank, and park her at a choke point, with Anders' Tactics programmed to Heal her if she gets too beat up. Micromanage her position almost more than your own, she's a movable wall more than a damage dealer, use her as such.

And yeah, collect lots of staves of various elements, and know when to switch them out. Get Rock Armor as soon as you can. Upgrade your cold-based attacks, fire-based attacks aren't as broadly useful. When in doubt, use Cold and Spirit attacks. Stay away from enemy Rogues, and try to exploit cross-class combos (Brittle, Staggered, Disoriented conditions, etc.) whenever possible.

Force Mage is a must and Elemental spells. Also I would suggest spirit specialization.

You really need to concentrate on moving your mage away from enemies before they come next to you.
Look at how the computer plays mage on your computer screen next time. The computer always moves your mages away if an enemy gets too close.

Heal is a very good spell to get on all mages imo.

the most basic tactic is to have a party of 3 damage dealers and 1 tank. Aveline is the most solid tank. Put activate taunt all the time and put on defensive sustains and she'll be a wall. Send in your other guys to rack up the damage.
