Well I finally started my mage playthrough trying out hard difficulty for the first time.  Couldn't beat the Ogre or the first mercenary quest.  Ha, Ha.

I tried starting out with 2  constitution and 1 Magic but  needed more willpower for armor requirments so I'm going 1,1,1.  Decided to get Force Mage for Unshakeable and then get Spirit Healer instead of Blood mage because that's what I want for the Character.

Since getting the stuff in your chest things seem to be easier so it's going alright so far.

Well....*sigh*....Hard difficulty and the bottom line of this posts subject seem to be two totally differant things to me.

First off I admit I haven't tried hard mode yet and find Hard mode to darn hard to do anyway.

second of all I frankly do like Blood magic since when you run out of magic you have a backup. The trick to blood magic is also putting some points to your health so you can survive a bit longer. if your health does get bad useing spirit healer would help alot. Frankly I was disapointed force mage because some targets (mainly flying) are immune to Force magic. Also bosses like Merdith are not damageable by any of the spells so I feel like on harder difficulties this pool would be useless.

Well the "classic" party of four is 1 tank, 1 healer, 2 damagers. Personally I like a Hawke mage as a damager, Anders or Merill as a healer, Avaline as a tank and Fenris as my second damager, or Isabella or Varic if you think you must have a rogue, but not a big deal w/o one.

I do use a lock bash mod and traps do little damage and are a null point for ranged anyway. Just slows Avaline and Fenris down a second and moves the battle a bit closer to you. Besides if you are playing a ranged PC, then you should be able to kite when needed and never get hit by an enemy.

Hmmnn by this time I think you've already finished the game so I think my advice will be for new players but I hope it will still be useful. I played nightmare and I used str build on my mage on the first 5 levels. Why? So that at an early level I can equip high armor equipments. by lvl 5 you should have 17 str and 13 con, and the rest is up to you. Battle Marcher, Wyvern scale Surfacer boots, Roar will help a lot and you can buy them early in the game, you can earn 7 Sovereigns even before you meet varric, 2 from Athenril's Quest (choose bribe then yes) and 5 loot from friedrich after eliminating his group. (from Meeran's Quest). I finished Nightmare and gained Unstoppable without using a single attack spell or any cross class combo. I used debuffs though. High health, high def and armor ensures that your support mage will stay alive and will even endure backstabs. Entropic Spells, Heal/group heal ,Haste, (Auras like Heroic and healing aura and upgrades), Elemental weapon for the whole team, just change your staff element base on enemies' weaknesses, Ressurection+, vitality, you can also reset abilities and stats asap to make use of the 1st ability point. I'll try to make a shorter if possible and use a step by step approach next time. Enjoy playing!
