There is a brand new fantasy rpg coming out in 2012 called Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. YouTube the name to check out the conference where it has first been demo'd for the first time, or go to the main website and check it out.

Art looks amazing. Combat looks satisfying. Voice acting looks top of the line. There is a Diablo-style loot system.

This game looks very promising.

IMO, so far the art direction looks a little bit overly bright and colorful for my tastes, but given the pedigree of Ken Ralston, I'm certainly looking forward to trying it.

I'm usually more of a fan of a naturalistic art style.

the magic system looks pretty amazing, though.

This video is the last video of the demo. In it, you get a sense of the environment.

I'm usually a fan of contemporary naturalistic settings, but this looks like some fresh air. And its beautiful.

Is this the game that Curt Schilling, former Red Sox pitcher, is behind? If so, I might owe it to him to pick this up for giving me that World Series win.

Yeah, he created 38Studios, the studio behind it, and he's an avid, hardcore gamer. Loves MMO's and RPG's. He used to have a clause in his contract that stipulated whatever hotel he stayed at had wireless internet access. He also said that late in games when not pitching he used to think "If this game ends soon, I will make it in time for the 1AM raid".

Lol.

He's behind this game. It's a brand new IP and a prelude to an MMO called Copernicus.

Three standard classes, 120 fully fleshed out dungeons, huge open world, very unique and fluid combat. Lots of crafting, looting and levelling. Story remains a mystery...but its written by R.A. Salvatore.

All that is known, basically, is that you begin the game by being resurrected from the dead and the purpose is to discover who you are.

Didn't you already make a thread about this game?

I remember posting that since Ken Rolston is the Lead Designer, it's definitely something worth looking at.

I think I made one a few weeks ago. But yeah I agree about Ralston - willing to check out anything he's working on.

We need to get some pics and info up and let others know. It seems like its a big unknown. Unfortunately, i can't really post pics cause I'm on a smartphone and the formatting is weird.

I read an article on Game Informer about it and saw the demo videos from a recent seminar. It really piqued my interest. Apparently its a MASSIVE open world with deep robust looting, dungeon crawling and exploration. Very diverse environments...definitely non-traditional but absolutely beautiful and diverse. I heard there's over 120 fully fleshed out dungeons stuffed with ancient weapons and loot. There seems to be a heavy focus on combat...but 38Studios and Big Huge Games reminds everyone at heart its a deep, robust rpg. They're claiming a Diablo-esk loot system and very complex, branching skill trees.

Something also cool...Rolston was talking about how exploration is more than just the massive world and searching it. He said that each weapon has a very special skill unique for the weapon and that the player has to "explore" the weapon, maybe a dagger or a mace...to find the special ability, because its completely hidden and secret. Pretty neat...a little fresh air.

I think it'll be good, Elder Scrolls like is some ways, for obvious reasons. I think this could be a sleeper. It looks like its being made with tender love.

If the combat doesn't suck like IMO the ES series, I'd love to try it. But I hated combat in Oblivion, so I couldn't get much satisfaction from it.

Looks good the pedigree of everyone involved is first class, pity its single player though. I'd really like more party based games to be made.

interesting gameplay footage

LINK

The color palette is a bit more fanciful and cheerful-looking than my usual preference, but considering Ken Rolston is the lead designer, I'm still willing to give it a shot.

I'm a little turned off by the art style and bright colors but the gameplay looks wild.  Definitely on my must have upcoming RPG list.  Hopefully they will start showing off more of the game beyond action scenes as we get closer to 2011.

I'm not sure if this will be a good game or not. The art direction looks like WoW with modern graphics to me. It seems like a skill driven character building game, which is great since it is based off playstyle, not set classes. Bioware could learn something from this approach, classes are just so antiquated and unflexable a concept. I also like that the combat is real time and uses a combo system, that could be fun, unlike the system of a handful of skills and cooldowns in DA 2 which just felt bland to me and uninspired after a few minutes of play.

A different game in many ways than Skyrim, but I am not sure I'll get to it once I buy Skyrim. Amalur does look promising, but I'll have to wait and hear more details before I can get excited about it.

Twitch combat and quick time events.... why'd they have to do that. ergh

I agree with the others that said it looks like WoW which is a bit offputting. Not terrible, just sort of cartoony looking.

The game looks kind of cool! I'm not into Fabel-esque games (I prefer darker and more mature games like Dragon Age) but this game seems pretty entertaining.

That's laughable.

I'm still not sold on Amalur though though honestly this looks like a game I can wait for. This won't be a first day buy.

twitch based combat is basically where how good you are is based on how fast you can "twitch". Combat based on reaction and reflex speed, basically every FPS (First Person Shooter, think Quake, Doom, Half-Life, etc.) as well as other such games, is based on this sort of thing, where you control your characters every move, dodge, shot, sidestep, attack, block, parry, etc. directly.

So this basically includes every Action RPG where you are not pausing in between issuing commands, such as Oblivion, FO3/FNV (if you don't use VATS), DAO and DA2 (for those people who don't pause), etc., right?

Games like Dragon Age no. You don't block, doge and the like by yourself it's based on your stats. Oblivion is more twitch based because you control it directly yes you lose say stamina but your controling it unlike in Dragon Age where you have a block chance or defense rating. Just because you aren't pausing doesn't make it a twitch based game. Fallout 3 is twitch because the chance to hit with gun depends on the player not say "attack rating" like in Dragon Age. You might increase damage through perks but even then your can pretty much dodge any incoming bullet by running.

That's not true.  Besides VATS, chance of success in attacks is based on character stats and weapon condition, not whether you hit the button at the right time.

Shooting at point blank range is still a hit. You don't miss reguardless of stats.

I've heard this before, is this a difference between the console and PC version?  Because, for me, if it was under your reticle you hit, if it wasn't you missed.
